USN from 82-90. C-130s in Hawaii first enlistment then Tomcats out of Oceana. 2 cruises on the Sara. Flight deck troubleshooter. This vid makes me miss it ALOT. My daughter is in now. Carrying the torch for the family. My wife was Navy and my oldest was Army. Thanks to all of you who served. Too many people take our military for granted. Don't forget to thank a vet or active duty ersonnel if you see them.
AB's are born not made! All AB's have one thing in common; their nuts ... However, they make the flight deck run like a machine. The very first "bird" I ever shot was a "Tomcat", at night, when he went into "Afterburner", I was "hooked"! 30 years later, I still miss the rush of a good "Cat Shot"! "When you are in, you want out. When you are out, you want back in."
@tailspin37 Glad you enjoyed the video. It is a film to tape transfer. We used to have couple nicknames for the Forrestal. We referred to it as the USS Zippo or the USS Forest Fire. I'd love to hear some of the nicknames for the Indy!
I spent 3 1/2 years on that tub. Flight deck snipe. Was glad to get out but I have some great memories. The flight deck fire was scary. A4 dropped a fuel tank on takeoff. Lit the whole rear deck up.
All i've been doing lately is u tubing F-14 & Carrier stuff, sucks gettin old. I miss it though, old Indy, oil pukin Indy. I saw some TARPS photos of her oil slick once, Pilot said she'd be easy to find in any ocean.
wish I could of been there for her decom, I miss the old girl, what a great ship to have served on and crew to serve with. love ya six duece... nothing beats sleeping under those cats when they were running full steam!
I had the privilege of sailing on the Indy for 4 days back c 1980 on a cross-pol. My ship, the Canadian destroyer Athabaskan worked plane guard while the Indy's crew re-certified their own Sea Kings after finding a hairline fracture in one of the tails. Absolutely one of the top 5 highlights of my 20 years in the navy.
