Price fixing, and making health insurance companies spend at least 85% of the premiums they collect on health insurance are two dramatically different things. Competition hasn't brought down costs or increased benefits on health insurance, because all of the companies have banded together in the same malicious practices. There is collusion and waste.

I do agree we needed to leave in a "public option" with consumers being able to buy in to a government program. Competition across state lines has been approved in the plan that passed. I think employers should be completely removed from having to provide healthcare to their employees. Give the money back to the employee and let us buy our own so that a job loss doesn't equal the loss of our health insurance. That may have been an okay plan before large American companies began outsourcing.

If people bought health care directly from the provider, then there would be an increase in choices and competition which would bring down costs and improve quality.

The bill has a public option, not a mandate. Where government funds one company to increase competition and lower prices. It would be like the government funding a tech company to lower prices and increase competition of the plasma tv, that is, if everyone needed a plasma tv to live long without being bankrupt

In regards to the so called "public option". If it is supposedly trying to address a lack of competition, then why do they need the government to get involved? There is plenty of competition in every other industry. If they really wanted to increase competition all they would have to do is allow insurance to be sold across state lines. Of course the democrats are against having this in the bill because this would be real market competition. They simply want people dependant on a gov't plan.

The fallacy of your opening statement is that you ignore that in a free market if a company "cuts corners" consumers can simply buy elsewhere (which is why health care needs to operate on the free market).

Of course companies want profit, just like Sony wants profit they have to keep prices low and quality high because there is a direct relationship between buyer and seller (unlike health care in America).

It is clear that the reason that democrats want a "public option" is not to ensure there is competition (as they claim). If they truely wanted to implement all measures to ensure an increased amount of competition, then why wouldn't they be for allowing insurance to be sold across state lines?

Uhh...plasma tv's were expensive because the technology was new and not many companies could mass produce yet. When everyone had it, companies had to lower price and improve quality to beat the rest. Poor quality health insurance means profit for insurance companies. The less they help people, the more money they keep. Tv's and healthcare are totally unrelated. the current insurance model is what drives up prices....just like when you crash your car and get it fixed with your insurance...you have no incentive to get a cheaf fix because you aren't paying the insurance company does. therefore that drives up costs and premiums.

Sorry, but you totally misrepresent the facts. The current system that is dominant in the United States was introduced in 1971.

The reason why costs are so high in the US is because of the dominant position of the privat insurance companies. They need to make profit and they make the most profit by charging as much money as possible while providing as little care as possible. And that's why it is a bad idea to run the healthcare system in a free market environment.

Wrong. During the FDR administration price controls were implemented on salaries causing employers to offer health insurance as a group benefit and introducing a 3rd party pay system which we currently have now.

When there is competition in the marketplace, prices for all goods(no matter how complex the system they're in) are lowered and quality goes up. There is hardly any competition in the current system. Instead it's dominated by government created monopolies(FDA),Large insurance providers and HMOs.There is little or no competition in this system, so costs are high. Socialism is when the means of production are controlled by the government. Many different levels of socialism are rampant in the USA.

The principal is that plasma tv's have plummeted in price, and quality has gone up due to market forces of competition and profit/incentive motive. The same thing would happen to medical equipment/medical care if it were based on the free market. It is not now, and Barack Obama will not fix the issue of high cost through essentially keeping free market forces out of the sector.

Health care has a large effect on the economy. If America would become a leader in free market health care it could be a major exporter of health care solutions around the world. We won't have more money... the money will be made through taxes; taxes that already pay welfare. We would have health care, but what happens when the 20% or more income tax rise comes? Another reason that prices are high are because of GOVERNMENT CREATED monopolies. THE FDA (Food and Drug Administration) so heavily regulates the industry that only big billion dollar companies can compete. Not mid-size or smaller businesses. This is a major reason for high costs.
