Price fixing, and making health insurance companies spend at least 85% of the premiums they collect on health insurance are two dramatically different things. Competition hasn't brought down costs or increased benefits on health insurance, because all of the companies have banded together in the same malicious practices. There is collusion and waste.
I do agree we needed to leave in a "public option" with consumers being able to buy in to a government program. Competition across state lines has been approved in the plan that passed. I think employers should be completely removed from having to provide healthcare to their employees. Give the money back to the employee and let us buy our own so that a job loss doesn't equal the loss of our health insurance. That may have been an okay plan before large American companies began outsourcing.
@sheltondk43 I agree with most of what you say here except for public option. The same argument could be used to have a public option for car insurance.

Being made in January, new evidence provides different points of views today, almost a year later.
But comparing the market of plasma televisions to the market of citizen's health is very sad. Almost as if a human life is expandable and worth a certain value, like plasma televisions.
The principle of why plasma tv's are extremly cheap and of good quality DO apply to health care.
If people bought health care directly from the provider, then there would be an increase in choices and competition which would bring down costs and improve quality.
You criticize the comparison but don't provide explanation for why you criticize.
Of course citizen's lives are important which is why we should reduce cost. I don't know why you think that reducing cost is bad.
I never stated that reducing cost is bad. Please don't put words in my mouth.
I did state my explanation, just not in a way that relates to politics.
The bill has a public option, not a mandate. Where government funds one company to increase competition and lower prices. It would be like the government funding a tech company to lower prices and increase competition of the plasma tv, that is, if everyone needed a plasma tv to live long without being bankrupt
In regards to the so called "public option". If it is supposedly trying to address a lack of competition, then why do they need the government to get involved? There is plenty of competition in every other industry. If they really wanted to increase competition all they would have to do is allow insurance to be sold across state lines. Of course the democrats are against having this in the bill because this would be real market competition. They simply want people dependant on a gov't plan.
That's assuming that all companies are responsible and would never cut corners for profit.
But, that is, sadly, one of the different views of Republicans and Democrats; what is the lesser evil, companies that could be corrupt or the mass population being irresponsible? It makes sense from both sides with an open mind.
Could you elaborate, please, on how you are sure that Democrats want people dependent on a government plan when the public option has no government run features, but funding?
The fallacy of your opening statement is that you ignore that in a free market if a company "cuts corners" consumers can simply buy elsewhere (which is why health care needs to operate on the free market).
Of course companies want profit, just like Sony wants profit they have to keep prices low and quality high because there is a direct relationship between buyer and seller (unlike health care in America).
It is clear that the reason that democrats want a "public option" is not to ensure there is competition (as they claim). If they truely wanted to implement all measures to ensure an increased amount of competition, then why wouldn't they be for allowing insurance to be sold across state lines?
This is a rhetorical question because the answer is obvious. They don't care about comepetition or even the cost of health care. They care about power and getting more and more of it for themselves.
You can't say that all Democrats want power the way you describe, we all know that a population is variant. There is not one absolute way to solve any problem, just differences of risk and rewards.
I was wanting to send you messages to have a rational debate, but your last phrase is irrational. Pulling a strawman, it is like saying all black people are thieves. Just substitute 'black' with 'Democrat'.
I'm out of here. But I wish you good times and a happy life.
Then tell me...if I am sooo irrational...what conclusion do you draw from the fact that democrats are constantly preaching competetition but ONLY if it is through a public option...they refuse to consdier opening up competition across state lines.
if that is sooo irrational, then please...give me your oh so rational conclusion.
Uhh...plasma tv's were expensive because the technology was new and not many companies could mass produce yet. When everyone had it, companies had to lower price and improve quality to beat the rest. Poor quality health insurance means profit for insurance companies. The less they help people, the more money they keep. Tv's and healthcare are totally unrelated. The rest of the video was void of arguements.
with your logic if sony just started making crappy tv's Sony would make billions more....yeah sorry no.
the current insurance model is what drives up prices....just like when you crash your car and get it fixed with your insurance...you have no incentive to get a cheaf fix because you aren't paying the insurance company does. therefore that drives up costs and premiums.
The current healthcare model was created by gov't back in the 40's.
You missed my point. If Sony made crappy tv's obviously people would stop buying them. But how do you know if you have the right insurance for you? You don't until a bunch of legal jargon that nobody understands denies you care because of some pre-existing condition or the company "conveniantly" doesn't cover your problem. The insurance companies earn their bonuses by denying care and keeping the money.
I'm agreeing the insurance model is bad...it's not becaue they are evil as you seem to infer but because there is nothing in the insurance models that keep costs down as explained above.
Do you know how the health insurance model became dominant in the US? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't the free market.
Sorry, but you totally misrepresent the facts. The current system that is dominant in the United States was introduced in 1971.
The reason why costs are so high in the US is because of the dominant position of the privat insurance companies. They need to make profit and they make the most profit by charging as much money as possible while providing as little care as possible. And that's why it is a bad idea to run the healthcare system in a free market environment.
Wrong. During the FDR administration price controls were implemented on salaries causing employers to offer health insurance as a group benefit and introducing a 3rd party pay system which we currently have now.
is this really an argument? that is terribly flawed logic. let's try an argument from the other side with an angle that actually connects. should we have private firecare companies? we could pay a firecare bill once a month, just in case, God forbid, we have a fire... and then hope it is covered when a fire actually occurs, and a fireman can be sent out to deal with said fire.
What is your point? If you are critisizing the employer provided health insurance model then I would agree. Do you know how this model came about? It used to be that health care was affordable even with new innnovations in medicine, equipment, drugs etc. before the big employee provided insurance model.
Lets try to correct your flawed logic. The fire service falls under the same situation as the military is completely constitutional. It is run at a local level and when firemen respond to fires, we are not really responding to an individual, we are responding to a fire they may spread to another house which may catch a neighborhood on fire which may catch a city on fire. It protects the populace as a whole. Fire service and health care also do not connect. Try something else.
Guiliani's example is RIDICULOUS new technology almost always drops dramatically after it's initial release as better more efficient ways of producing those technologies come are made. Has that happened in the last few DECADES with medical care? Have medical costs gone down without "mandates"?? NO! They've gone UP! Hospitals should be run by the government NOT private businesses who pocket large profit margins.
Botchalism are you retarded? YOU ARE MAKING GIULIANI'S POINT!

Sad thing is republicans thought spending 100s of billions on Iraq really made us safer, god what a nightmare, if only they spent those funds on hospitals we'd have the best medical care in the entire world which is fitting because we are, or were, the wealthiest nation in the world. Obama is no better going off to Afghanistan when we shouldn't be at war AT ALL! Osama is GONE, it's OVER stop making excuses to keep defense contractors on the payroll.
That comment just shows your ignorance and lack of anything of substance to say. Last time I checked there is no other country in the world where more people are trying to GET IN to. You may call it a dump, but it is much more telling to see how people vote with their feet by the still enormous immigration applicants. No other country is remotely close.
Our question was: why Obama took so long to distance him self from Rev. Wrights. he used his Pastor to gain the African American Vote than after; HE SOLD HIS PASTOR FOR 30 COINS.He distanced from J. Wrights now, because he wants to prove he can gain the white vote denouncing his pastor.
Fitting since his church that he has attended for the past 20 years which adheres to the "black liberation movement" is also highly marxist in their view of society.
why should buying a plasma tv (single issue) has anything to do with a system which would, maybe should, cover all of the USA? which is ways more complex than introducing and marketing plasma tvs? also: nothing like this is taking anyone "back to socialism", as the USA never ever had anything socialist going on, it is all creepy juggling of words, you proivde here.
When there is competition in the marketplace, prices for all goods(no matter how complex the system they're in) are lowered and quality goes up. There is hardly any competition in the current system. Instead it's dominated by government created monopolies(FDA),Large insurance providers and HMOs.There is little or no competition in this system, so costs are high. Socialism is when the means of production are controlled by the government. Many different levels of socialism are rampant in the USA.
Thats because you (like Barack Obama) don't understand the principal behind the correlation. The principal is that plasma tv's have plummeted in price, and quality has gone up due to market forces of competition and profit/incentive motive. The same thing would happen to medical equipment/medical care if it were based on the free market. It is not now, and Barack Obama will not fix the issue of high cost through essentially keeping free market forces out of the sector.
Far as you know? I'm not making a guess here. I'm stating a fact. No country on the face of the earth has a higher rate of immigrant applicants than the United States of America. Secondly, obviously many South Americans will try to get in because they are the closest to the US (Canada has only 30 mil). I can't believe a Swede is trying to make fun of the USA. Sweden as the country that helped Hitler's Germany through allowing them to use their railways. Discusting.
That was a very impressive point by Rudy. Other than that, I hate that dude. He is not a Republican. He wants more war overseas. Sorry, I want the economy fixed. ;)
Health care has a large effect on the economy. If America would become a leader in free market health care it could be a major exporter of health care solutions around the world. Also if health care costs were lower, Americans would have more money to spend on things that grow the economy. Ya gotta put your thinking cap on a little bit.
We won't have more money... the money will be made through taxes; taxes that already pay welfare. We would have health care, but what happens when the 20% or more income tax rise comes? I'd feel much safer knowing i can pay my mortgage and my kids can sleep in their beds, rather than being evicted or lose my job cause i lose my car, etc.(loan payments & interest wont change, but my income SURELY will). Obama's idea is disaster, and it's devastating if he grants illegals amnesty (MORE TAXES)
Another reason that prices are high are because of GOVERNMENT CREATED monopolies. THE FDA (Food and Drug Administration) so heavily regulates the industry that only big billion dollar companies can compete. Not mid-size or smaller businesses. This is a major reason for high costs. Free market is not the perfect solution, but it is the best alternative. What is a better alternative? price fixing??? Government bureaucracy??
The problem AS OBAMA STATES IT, is that health care costs are too high. I agree with that. UNFORTUNATLEY his solution as stated on his website is PRICE FIXING. He thinks that by cutting down on profits he can lower prices. THIS IS LUNACY!! When a company has a an artifical cap on their profits, they will not lower their costs THEY WILL LOWER THEIR QUALITY!!!!!!!
The problem with Healthcare is not price fixing or the solution is not far from price fixing. It is profit, profit profit! Obama understands that profit is the problem, fixing how much profit a company can make from health care is the key, if companies can profit from your death then they will. If they can't then they most likely won't. As far as TVs see the comment by exit22dezhu.
This is not a video promoting Rudy Giuliani. This is an instance however, where Rudy gets it right on an intelligent way to lower health care costs, other than price fixing. The point is to highlight that Barack Obama has very few specific solutions (alot of broad vague ones). The ones he does have are usually taking America back to socialism.
Price fixing, and making health insurance companies spend at least 85% of the premiums they collect on health insurance are two dramatically different things. Competition hasn't brought down costs or increased benefits on health insurance, because all of the companies have banded together in the same malicious practices. There is collusion and waste.

As far as TVs see the comment by exit22dezhu.

people wait for prices for tv's to go down.
gonna hold off buying those life saving drugs, while waiting for the prices to drop?
you're probably right about price fixing though

This is not a video promoting Rudy Giuliani. This is an instance however, where Rudy gets it right on an intelligent way to lower health care costs, other than price fixing. The point is to highlight that Barack Obama has very few specific solutions (alot of broad vague ones). The ones he does have are usually taking America back to socialism.
