It was an incredible show.We were on the lower level maybe 20 rows back.Great acoustics and another good feature of the Orpheum is it is at the end of the street(Hamilton PL) so there was a very communal feeling right before the show with everyone in the street talking. It doesnt beat SRV and Albert King at the Opera house but very good nonetheless.
this song always makes me cry because i remember things going on with what he was talking about in this song .....i was in high school....very impressionable
I saw them in Boston on the first tour in 1982 and they still sound great. This doesn't have that tired sound that so many reunion concerts seem to have. And they seem to still love playing....maybe thats the secret.....
@Delmarblues46 I was there too (Orpheum, if memory serves). I remember buying the tickets at Sears Ticketmaster, on the rumor that Asia was composed of the guys above. When the tickets printed out, they read, "Asia is..." We were all giddy at our score.
Great Song, can people please refrain from posting frivilous comments about their age or how old they look. For crying out loud, this is ASIA, not some untalented boy band. They were already established musicians in the 80's when they released their first album in '82. Steve Howe resembles my grandmother so much it's uncanny LOL
He was always a bit odd looking in my opinion, not that it matters in the least.
How many musician's have fell by the way side simply because they weren't eye candy in the days since MTV reared it's ugly head?- video, did in fac,t kill the radio star and probably a lot of worthy careers
Without a doubt Steve Howe is one of the greatest, most talented guitarists of all times. I first saw him live at Madison Square Garden in 1973 during the Yessongs tour and he's only gotten better with age.
Someone needs to tell Geoff Downes he's a bit out of shape for a 'wife-beater' undershirt and leather/pleather/vinyl pants. ;-) Still great at slammin' the keys, though!
I live in the UK and yep there is a dumbing down of the entire education system here. I look at the exam papers for the equivelant exams that I sat 30 years ago and laugh. I could do them in my sleep and get an "A" without studying in spite of the fact that I left school A LONG TIME AGO. Its deliberate government policy. They want people to have a certain level of education, but they really don't want us to be too clever, we can see through the government then and they don't like that.
@Jupitersgoose Same thing over here across the pond, mate. I've given up on the establishment, and have my daughter practice her literature by copying Kipling, Whitman, Porter, and Dickens (and others). Read Toffler, and then educate your children to be leaders, not serfs.
Jesus wept, Steve Howe looks ancient, he was always a bit of a guitar geek but he was always in my top 10 of the worlds best guitarists in any case. That guy is fantastic on guitar.( My other favourite top 10 guitar geek is Robert Fripp from "King Crimson"). I always rated Steve from way back in the days of "Yes". Thanks for posting this it brings back lots of happy memories.
I saw Asia in Bakersfield 9/2/2010 at the Fox Theater. Great show by some of the greatest performers on their instruments of all time. I have been a Steve Howe fan since early Yes, having seen them in concert four times in the seventies. I have "rediscovered" Asia, and their timeless music and great lyrics. Downes / Wetton are a great duo in any band, and Carl Palmer was phenomenal - a "real" rock drummer. Asia is a must see for any serious prog/rock fan.
Last Night: 9/07/10 Aladdin Theater, Portland. My high school auditorium was twice the size of the joint. Steve Howe is better than ever now believe it or not. His acoustic solo was mesmerizing. A truly brilliant guitarist. Unfortunately, they didn't dig me too much as a direct result of my slightly over-zealous enthusiasm. Steve Howe looked right at me and Shushed me. lol :(sorry! and John Wetton murmered 'That's a different band' after I repeatedly screamed-out: "King Crimson! King Crimson!"
LOL, I saw them the night after that in Seattle. Funny enough, it was a similar venue. When they sang Don't Cry (with just Downes playing keys) everyone was so silent I had to lower my voice while singing. No one got up except for standing ovations and everyone was ubber respectful, very intimate show. I got a wave from John during Days Like This and later had a chat and a toast with Geoff at a bar after the concert. Awesome guy.
@philosopher2king I was thinking maybe because of John's heart surgery they wanted it to be mellow. I didn't realize at the time. I feel kind of bad now. I hope they don't hate me?
Hahaha, nah. Portland and Seattle were the last two shows of this leg of their tour, I'm sure they were exhausted and ready to go home. I know John looked tired at the beginning of our show (then he warmed up with the crowd). He's actually very short too, like 5'6".
This is great show. With Phoenix, when I put the CD in the 1st time and the first chord played I was like "YES", this is vintage Asia!". I said the same thing when Finger on the Trigger started the 1st time. They are remaining true to their sound!!!
It just occured to me that the Original Asia has now been back together longer than they were together in the first place. 1981-1983-84 (When Steve Left) Now 2006-2010. I am glad they are back and I love OMEGA!
They sound surprisingly good here. I mean, really good. Very impressive after all these years and other projects they've each been involved with. Makes me feel good to see this.
vick ... That was around a time Joe became ill .. and they cancelled some shows ... so that figures. Though Joe Elliot has (Def Leppard's songs require) a way bigger range than John Wetton .. But John is great! Has that clear voice ... and plays bass guitar awesome. This is one of Asia's rockier songs
Thanks FOr posting this! ASIA are excellent in concert! THis kicks Ass! However, whoever took this great footage and stuck their stupid ass ad BEFORE the show deserves to be publicly flogged and shat upon for almost blowing my fuckin' speakers out with a nerdy ad that is louder than even the music should be!
May Carl Palmer play the TANK drum solo (1977) upon your stupid, stupid head. (not aimed at the poster of Asia..it;s for the dipshit advertiser who think he's the WHO live in '75!
Saw then in '82 on the "Asia" tour...awesome musicians and I agree that rap is crap...no musicianship and what's with referring to women as female dogs or gardening implements? Today's youth (for the most part) have no idea what music is.
"No musicianship" in rap/hip hop? You've obviously not heard The Roots other than their nightly Jimmy Fallon gig. And "referring to women as female dogs or gardening implements?". I guess you never had any issue with, say, Guns N Roses, when topped the charts with similar and racist lyrics then, eh?
@Fakename70 I have plenty of issues with GNR and use of foul and degrading lyrical content...Rap and/or Hip Hop are not worth my time or effort and I don't watch Jimmy Fallon...I work at night as a professional musician
they sound better than before, it seems like no past time. wetton have his voice fantastic, six motnh ago i saw a Def Leppard concert and i sadly found that joe elliot can't sing their songs, but i compare with this wetton and is amazing, Palmer is fuckin great, and Howe is a thunder still. Great, really great band!.
I enjoy this song because it touches the reality of my life in ways no other words can do,, for you see like others I am sure, I have lived through some things that I can not imagine even in my wildest dreams, yet they are not dreams they are my reality..
John Wetton is like wine, getting better with age. I have always loved Asia. I am
your partner kittenrenea, I also wonder about their personal lives, and I hope it is not too late to attend an Asia concert, even ist's only one of my wildest dreams. Lov them.
wetton's voice has aged well, mr. downes is a keyboard player, they never really go bad, but it's really weird to see the juxtaposition between Howe and Palmer. Howe used to be awesome, and this is really embarrasingly bad, and I always that Palmer was overrated, but he's actually gotten better over the years...
@prinznevsky You must be deaf...Steve Howe sounds exactly like he always has. And you were right originally, Carl Palmer is overrated. He is an arrogant bastard, too.
when I was a teenager, one of my nicknames was 'Asia Lady' 'cause I loved Asia- boy, does John Wetton sound just like he did many years ago, or what? I always thought they were highly underated...I wonder about their personal lives.. .you know, children, marriages, etc..I tried finding out before, but didn't find didly squat! I always thought "Midnight Sun" was a lovely tune...so relaxing and different! Don't Cry and Heat of the Moment were 2 of their best though...
say them live in 1981 on the first tour and again in 2006.Along time but well worth the wait...p.s. NEVER thought it would happen...but it did .Long live rock
This was early in their reunion, and they obviously knew a DVD was being shot, so naturally they're a little stiff. I saw them recently and they had amazing energy and passion.
Asia's debut album released in March of 1982, as of July 2009, has sold 11 million copies worldwide!!!....and well deserved!!...the album is a masterpiece!!!
I am 46 this yr... and still ...YES... Asia... wow.
The talent is the most underrated. Probably due to a lack of intelligence in the population? Maybe . But I am glad to have heard these men and their songs
@dietcoke0909 I'm 14 and I agree, there is a lack of intelligence, expecially in teens, I hate the music most of them listen to now...that rap crap shoudn't even be considered music in my opinion, theres no talent. Now this is music and talent. This is my first time ever hearing of this band, but their music is really good, I also have an obsession with Meat Loaf lol, he's an amazing singer, it's a shame that this music isn't listened to very much anymore:(
@dietcoke0909 Yeah, Asia was the soul of summer 1982, when i got my first Sony Walkman!!!! I just saw Steve Howe play last nite with YES @ Bethel Woods- what a mad sound scientist- i didn't know Asia reunited in 2006!??? How does he remember all that music in his head? I'm a musican, and i still occasionally need cheat sheets! Now i can hear so much of YES in this music!
@dietcoke0909 Indeed. There can be no doubt that the global population is not very intelligent, and becoming more so with each passing generation. It has likely always been this way, but it's reaching a crisis now. Richard Lynn has researched this phenomena and has found there is a negative correlation between fertility and intelligence. An every increasing global population forebodes rising levels of stupidity. Effectively, humanity devolves, and we experience it every day.
these are 4 consumate professionals, each a legend and incredible talent. I love seeing them still performing after all these years, they stood the test of time after all!!!
Wetton is getting old, The Pitch is much lower and "older" than in the 80's and 90's. But still, he has that "sound" and its all that he needs. Great vocalist, very difficult style to sing. No vibratos, just clean and pure sound( material in 70's, 80's and 90's). This is "ok" too, but little bit tired, i understand that( he is now a old man). Still, Asia is still Asia. No matter what, nothing cant ruin that fact.
Everyone gets old. Wetton has gone through a lot of personal hardships over the years. He has overcome them and is an inspiration to all. Vocally he sounds great. The voice is still top notch as is his playing. I'm a trained vocalist and I have trouble singing the highs that I did years ago. It's a natural component of aging and very few are immune to it. It's a blessing having Asia back and active again! Don't miss them live!
Yeah, he's always played that way. His technique has always been phenomenal. You just know he listened to a lot of Buddy Rich when he was young.
This performance isn't bad. Not '82 quality, but not bad for their age now. There was another vid here on YT a few months ago from the 2008 tour, and they sounded horrible. This is much better. I miss Geoff's Fairlight CMI, but things change, I guess. I'm suprised Steve still has his original sunburst Gibson ES Artist guitar. Cool! (I want it.)
A portable Casio can do more than that Fairlight CMI by today's standards. FYI just saw a Synclavier system go on Ebay for a mere $5600....a steal for collectors, but far from the $275K pricetag for the time.
Neil seems to be in great mental and physical condition (aside from hair loss!). He's an avid cyclist, which counters aging and a non smoker to top it off.
Well, I guess it depends on ones musical preference. Carl Palmer is definitely ONE of the best. Moon and Bonham have self destructed. And Peart, well he is as strong as ever with the same band for over 34 years selling out everywhere. I would have to say the Neil it the king.
Awesome video, hard to find good quality ones of the recent tours. I agree, Howe looks like the Cryptkeeper, and JW, who I would have voted as most beautiful man in the world circa 1982, definitely shows some signs of aging (tho Carl still looks pretty darned good)--but they are such amazing musicians. How many people can play a bass line like that while singing lead ? And Howe's brilliance looks absolutely EFFORTLESS on his part--amazing to behold. ASIA still rocks.
Yes - Kansas - Asia ecc. mega super bands....

wetton's voice has aged well, mr. downes is a keyboard player, they never really go bad, but it's really weird to see the juxtaposition between Howe and Palmer. Howe used to be awesome, and this is really embarrasingly bad, and I always that Palmer was overrated, but he's actually gotten better over the years...
prinznevsky 2 years ago
@prinznevsky You must be deaf...Steve Howe sounds exactly like he always has. And you were right originally, Carl Palmer is overrated. He is an arrogant bastard, too.
jocovo84 1 year ago
Viewing this after not hearing anything about them after many years , it's chilling!
Wetton's voice, one of the best in progressive rock, sounds great, even a little edge to it now.
Howe: mad scientist comment was a hoot-no disrespect- I admire him as well. Saw Yes in 1974/75/77/ at MSG so I've been around.
Yes Asia did get a bit more pop oriented for my taste but the musicianship is there.
Great quality video

when I was a teenager, one of my nicknames was 'Asia Lady' 'cause I loved Asia- boy, does John Wetton sound just like he did many years ago, or what? I always thought they were highly underated...I wonder about their personal lives.. .you know, children, marriages, etc..I tried finding out before, but didn't find didly squat! I always thought "Midnight Sun" was a lovely tune...so relaxing and different! Don't Cry and Heat of the Moment were 2 of their best though...

say them live in 1981 on the first tour and again in 2006.Along time but well worth the wait...p.s. NEVER thought it would happen...but it did .Long live rock

Good version but it lacks the youthful vigor and excitement to really make it amazing. But that's ok - we're all old and crusty now anyway.
rorshakks 2 years ago
This was early in their reunion, and they obviously knew a DVD was being shot, so naturally they're a little stiff. I saw them recently and they had amazing energy and passion.

Speechless , jaw dropping , that's what hours of practice is all about. And without controversy real talent.

I am 46 this yr... and still ...YES... Asia... wow.
The talent is the most underrated. Probably due to a lack of intelligence in the population? Maybe . But I am glad to have heard these men and their songs
dietcoke0909 2 years ago 25
@dietcoke0909 I'm 14 and I agree, there is a lack of intelligence, expecially in teens, I hate the music most of them listen to now...that rap crap shoudn't even be considered music in my opinion, theres no talent. Now this is music and talent. This is my first time ever hearing of this band, but their music is really good, I also have an obsession with Meat Loaf lol, he's an amazing singer, it's a shame that this music isn't listened to very much anymore:(
CountryFordGirl26 1 year ago 3
@dietcoke0909 Yeah, Asia was the soul of summer 1982, when i got my first Sony Walkman!!!! I just saw Steve Howe play last nite with YES @ Bethel Woods- what a mad sound scientist- i didn't know Asia reunited in 2006!??? How does he remember all that music in his head? I'm a musican, and i still occasionally need cheat sheets! Now i can hear so much of YES in this music!
GothFaery65 1 year ago
@dietcoke0909 Indeed. There can be no doubt that the global population is not very intelligent, and becoming more so with each passing generation. It has likely always been this way, but it's reaching a crisis now. Richard Lynn has researched this phenomena and has found there is a negative correlation between fertility and intelligence. An every increasing global population forebodes rising levels of stupidity. Effectively, humanity devolves, and we experience it every day.

Montin83 2 years ago
Everyone gets old. Wetton has gone through a lot of personal hardships over the years. He has overcome them and is an inspiration to all. Vocally he sounds great. The voice is still top notch as is his playing. I'm a trained vocalist and I have trouble singing the highs that I did years ago. It's a natural component of aging and very few are immune to it. It's a blessing having Asia back and active again! Don't miss them live!

I agree, there are videos of Sinatra too and you can hear the difference in sounds. Excellent song though.

Very nice! ...and check out Carl holding the sticks traditional method - awesome.
nodestudio 3 years ago
Yeah, he's always played that way. His technique has always been phenomenal. You just know he listened to a lot of Buddy Rich when he was young.
This performance isn't bad. Not '82 quality, but not bad for their age now. There was another vid here on YT a few months ago from the 2008 tour, and they sounded horrible. This is much better. I miss Geoff's Fairlight CMI, but things change, I guess. I'm suprised Steve still has his original sunburst Gibson ES Artist guitar. Cool! (I want it.)
Ken5244 3 years ago
A portable Casio can do more than that Fairlight CMI by today's standards. FYI just saw a Synclavier system go on Ebay for a mere $5600....a steal for collectors, but far from the $275K pricetag for the time.

Carl Palmer is one of the three greatest drummers of the rock era, and the other two (Kieth Moon, John Bonham) are dead. Think of that!
mrdudelz 2 years ago
We still have Neil Peart
dappawap 2 years ago 3
what about Sewart Copeland and Neil Peart?
bigsixtrain 2 years ago
Neil seems to be in great mental and physical condition (aside from hair loss!). He's an avid cyclist, which counters aging and a non smoker to top it off.
johnsignus 2 years ago
Cozy Powell was pretty good too. Shame he's dead...
Roger Taylor's still alive though.
SmashlytheBassGod 2 years ago 3
Well, I guess it depends on ones musical preference. Carl Palmer is definitely ONE of the best. Moon and Bonham have self destructed. And Peart, well he is as strong as ever with the same band for over 34 years selling out everywhere. I would have to say the Neil it the king.
johnsignus 2 years ago
I agree. Of the drummers you listed, Neil is the king when it comes to longevity.
Regarding your other post: I read that he had been smoking again, maybe a couple years ago. ??

Awesome video, hard to find good quality ones of the recent tours. I agree, Howe looks like the Cryptkeeper, and JW, who I would have voted as most beautiful man in the world circa 1982, definitely shows some signs of aging (tho Carl still looks pretty darned good)--but they are such amazing musicians. How many people can play a bass line like that while singing lead ? And Howe's brilliance looks absolutely EFFORTLESS on his part--amazing to behold. ASIA still rocks.
