i tell you this now if you do a fall wrong and you land on your hip theres a 95% chance you will never pratice aikido again, most because of the pain caused by the fall and 2nd because you seriously crack the bone and need surgery to reattach it.

Maybe it's because he's so good but it looks like the students are barely trying. They should have one crazy guy from the crowd run at him and see what happens
No offense but it s like he's falling down out of courtesy :-/ U know, like he s trying to hit the ground. Is it really like this an an actual battle? Leet's say someone attacks u in real life and your life s in danger (no weapons), is it possible he/shes gonna fall down like that or that u can push him/her so easily? just asking btw.
@naughtyauntieemma All techniques in Aikido are based on the principle of unbalance. Putting it simple, most moves work as leg sweeps: you remove the opponent from balance by positioning yourself in the right spot. If you don't have anything under you, you fall.
Techniques may use joint locks, strikes ('atemis'); but the general idea is to remove the opponent from balance. Hitting the floor at high speed is very painful, so Aikido practicioners learn how to roll/breakfall to avoid damage.
@naughtyauntieemma@93cian if someone attacked him who doesn't know how to fall, he could easily snap a bone. I would know ... I broke my collarbone last year because I didn't do a break fall. When done properly, Aikido (the "way of harmonized energy" after all) looks effortless. But there is a LOT of power channeled into those falls, and if that channeling is broken then yes, it will not only look more powerful but could seriously harm. We can only see power when it clashes, not when it flows.
I make a point not to condemn people who don't think Aikido works, even though it does. You have to understand that for some people, unless they personally experience something, they don't believe it to be real.
its very graceful, artfull, and interesting, and looks kinda of like fun if your into it, combination modern dance, gymnastics like a man on man dance, but please dont pretend like this shit even remotely works, maybe a few holds and arm bars but the throws are so played out, and what is with the chaps they have to wear
@ortmaster allot of the techniques in aikido involve joint manipulation. In a real fight we'd hope they'd resist, it's the resistance that would make the joint pop, if they went with the throw, they'd just fall down as they do in the vid. The 'chaps' are called hakama, and they were worn by the samurai, the greatest martial art developers in history. They're tied in such a way that helps you feel your centre of gravity more easily.
its very graceful, artfull, and interesting, and looks kinda of like fun if your into it, combination modern dance, gymnastics like a man on man dance, but please dont pretend like this shit even remotely works, maybe a few holds and arm bars but the throws are so played out
@ortmaster the throws are played out to rolls to stop back and wrist injury. All martial arts that require a partner such as judo and jujutsu, teach to roll without resistance. Aikido works it's just the attacks are designed to look like sword cuts. People that assume it doesn't work, shouldn't be lazy, and go find a school like mine that teaches defence from hooks and jabs
I train and love Aikido. However, I have trained in shorinji kempo, wing chun, and kali and read about many other arts over the last 18 years. What I don't get and it bothers me is the nepotism found in Aikido. Can somebody explain? Why does the son and grandson automatically assume the position of doshu in Aikido? I think the best Aikidoist should gain such a title not be entitled to it because his last name is Ueshiba.
@Tarc5150 great point. It was like why does learning an armbar just feel so much cooler learning it, getting caught in it from a gracie? I guess, it just feels like you are touching a part of history - the nostalgia
Yah I guess that's a good point for most people. I personally prefer to just learn from the best teacher available. Your point has merit though.
I asked some senior instructors at my dojo and they said it's just part of Japanese tradition and culture. It doesn't mean he's the greatest aikido practioner in the world. Best of luck with your training.
i practice Wado but our sensei has organised us a day course for Aikido, looking forward to it, looks interesting, we do locks in Wado but apparently they're nowhere near as powerfull as aikido.
If u had any real knowledge about martial arts find ur local aikido studio and find out for urself. As for the UFC comment, aikido is a representation of the softness of the art, look it up, all the techniques shown here have have been made so that people can come back to practice the next day otherwise if the full technique was applied there would be no one to practice with
Ironmaiden123654. If u have nothing good to say about something then don't say anything at all, especially something u obviously know nothing about. Most peo
@ironmaiden123654 First there is a big difference between ufc and aikido , aikido is only for defense , aikido is defense!! in ufc they score point , they want to knock out each others , you don't see a fighter trying to defend himself only , so why aikido should exist in the ufc ? Aikido is the elite pf all the martial arts , it doesn't use maximum power or destruction , we use your power simply , no matter how you are strong , you will be defeated ...
@ironmaiden123654 In the jumps that you see , these are very important , because he isn't clowning , he is escaping from broken hands ,elbows , fingers , when he jumps , he is surviving , believe me if it was you or any martial artist , all what you need is 3 seconds to be finished , you don't know how to survive against an aikido player , you know how to punch and kick , it's not martial art , martial art isn't for competitions and violence , it's for a better world .
Aikido is more complex than sports such as judo/Karate(which is in the Ufc) because it is more than one movement and if your movements are off then it can give the other person a chance to attack again,
Also the reason it is not picked by Ufc fighters is because it has no strikes that are labled to the Art.
Judo - Throws
Karate - Punches/Kicks
Etc, Use your brain before labeling something that you know nothing about,
You know, if they didn't 'perform like a clown' here they would have broken joints everywhere in their body after the demo. Don't try to act smart by commenting so boldly you know nothing on.
Doshu is great and I love aikido. But to be honest, I´ve seen only one aikido master who presents aikido during embukai with the realistic way - it´s Seagal shihan. Many others only show the "kata", learned attacks and the corresponding techniques to it when they perform aikido, but Seagal shihan improvises so much during techniques. But I don´t criticise anything, I just mention:)
@Ihealya You didn´t understand what I meant. Don´t worry...Watch some of the short films with O-sensei where two american students come to his dojo and train with Koichi Tohei. YOu will understand what I meant under the term "kata training".
I know folks who started training Aikido because they went to Japan "just to see". There's lots of BS in Aikido and I think folks are right to call it out. But you seem to have an open mind and I very much respect that. As with anything, it comes down to the person and the sincerity of the training. Also keep in mind, that this how Aikidoka "train" nobody who's done Aikido for a few decades will tell you it would look like this "IRL". besides it's not for fighting anyway :)
i would hate to tango with this guy
