they crossed borders to Gaul (France), and started war with the further north.

What drug could they have taken to dependably improve strength, etc, that could not also have made them useless in organized combat?
Maybe a small amount of alcohol could loosen one up and improve mental state/function. This wouldn't be the cause of the rage, though.

Odin was perhaps also a god of chaos or frenzy, as his name is from the same root as "anger" or "rage" (for example, compare Wodan and the modern Dutch word "woede", which means rage), but it is unlikely that they meditated themselves into a rage without any external influences like drug herbs or self-mutilation or anything.
