I've been with my husband for 7 years now, and the way you're planning on doing it is really the best way, but if you plan on children in the future, it's best to do Christmas morning at home and have a set tradition for that time, then from lunch on go to the family you're supposed to be at that year. Like in our house we always give each other pjs on Christmas eve, and then we open 'santa' presents in the morning wearing our Christmas eve pajamas. It's my favorite part of Christmas.

I've been married for 2 christmases now and we choose one family to spend Christmas eve with, depending on what's going on. Then we spend Christmas morning with my Hubby's fam and Christmas dinner with my family. It works out for us and our families.

I've been married for 9 years and with the same guy for 15 years (yes, I'm OLD!!) Anyway, our Christmas rule is...if people wanna see us on Christmas Day, they better get their butts over to our house, because we aren't stepping out the door till Boxing Day! We do this MAINLY because we're lazy, but also for the kids. What child wants to tromp around visiting people when all their fun toys and stuff are sitting at home??!?! Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! :)

Hey Rach, here is how my husband and I do it, each year his family goes up to Quebec City (3 hours from Montreal) to visit extended family, so every other year, we go too, we do the French-Canadian "réveillon" on the 24th, Christmas dinner on the 25th, and come home on the 26th, then spend New Years with my parents which the kids love because it's like a 2nd Christmas, lol! The years where we're home, we spend Christmas Day with my family and we spend New Years Day with his family. It works! :)

Not all varieties of live trees shed a lot of needles. When you go to a tree farm, you could always ask what varieties are "low maintenance." In my experience the long-needled trees hardly shed at all.

My family always gets a real Christmas tree, and it IS a pain because of all the needles. Also, this year we tried out tinsel. Oh boy. Our dogs decided that it is fun to grab the tinsel OFF of the tree and put it all over the house. My mom used to be into the calm lights and matching ornaments but then when us kids brought home our handmade ornaments she had to give up on matching everything haha!

You could split the lights! My fiance's mom loved the white lights and he HAD to have the colored one, sooo she took the time to sit down and pull out a few lights off each strand and replace them with a few bulbs from the opposite strand. When she told me that I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but it actually looks really nice! Good negotiating! LOL! I also had to remind myself that it's just a tree :) if it's THAT important to him, then he can have it the way he wants it.

If you're going to get a real tree, I highly suggest getting a Fraiser Fir!! Almost no shedding whatsoever. Me and my family get that kind every year. Also, if you're going to get LED lights, make sure you get the warm lights. Much softer and prettier!!

And me and my boyfriend do his mom's family on christmas eve, and they open one present that night, then we go to my family's christmas stuff. a then the day after boxing day we do his dad's side of the family christmas dinner. ....My fam has Christmas Eve & then we do midnight mass THEN...Christmas Day is always just my husband and I in the am and his family in the afternoon/evening because that's kind of their thing..It's tough when travel arrangements from sis-in-laws/brother-in-laws get in the mix on who can be where when....oh the love of large families and holidays! =) It's crazy but my husband always tells me "just go with the flow" when I start panicking--(I come from SMALL family & he is from a LARGE fam!!)
