I wished i was at this gig...........................just to break Mick Hucknalls jaw so he could never talk or sing again.....i would have got at least a knighthood for that.
Yes that's right. The lyrics are probably available online. I wonder what it's all about as well. It goes well with the music, and I'm sure there's some background to it. He's a clever man after all, and very well read!
I was one of those spotty kids at Belle Vue ,( it was only up the road from me),looking at the band as if they were aliens, and to many they were, great band. There were so many diverse characters in Manchester around this time compared to the fashionistas in the South.
@Wearenotreallyhere i take it you a city fan with that name. I was there that night, i`m the one chewing gum a few feet behind Hucknall. I still live in Gorton and watch the mighty blues.
Brilliant. Thanks for posting this. I remember seeing this when it was originally broadcast on the late Tony Wilson's 'So it Goes' TV show. And I still think this is much better than the album version. Bob Dickinson's eerie electric piano gives it a strange "other worldly" vibe, which the Real Life track lacked. Pity he left, really.
Interesting to find out that it wasn't actually Mick Hucknall in the audience after all this time. lol
OOhh semiotecs is getting rather annoyed!!! Your wrong, this is my brother Martin who attended many gigs around this time, Hucknall has confirmed it wasn't him and it was also discussed in Time Out. This is deffo Martin, I know my bro!!!
Thanks for backing me up, katrinamrae. Semiotecs seems to have gone awfully quiet ! Your brother Martin is whole lot better looking than Mick Hucknall too !
Also, I forgot to mention... HUCKNALL was the cunt in the Frantic Elevators who supported almost every fucking band in Liverpool and Manchester at this time ... he was later much reduced to wander around the Hacienda with a fucking silver cane, fer chrissakes, in order to be noticed. Well gonch!!
OK, here's the info no-one else has provided (as it appears they weren't there!). This gig took place at the Elizabethan Ballroom, Belle Vue, Manchester. This performance was in the early hours of the morning. This info is courtesy of my mate Martin who IS the ginger guy you can see in the close up. Look VERY carefully - it's NOT Mick Hucknall !
There are some misconceptions about Hucknall appearing in the audience at gigs like these (incl the Clash, Banshees, etc). Even Hucknall himself said in an interview with Q Magazine that he wasn't at the 1976 Sex Pisols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall 'It's a great myth. Someone claims to have it on film but unless I was sleepwalking it wasn't me'.
Sorry to blow a few theories here but the ginger guy at the front is definitely not Mick Hucknall. He's my mate Martin who was at this gig - 100% genuine. Great song - thanks for posting.
From about 1.07 we see a girl with short red hair. She is in the front row. I have wondered for many years who she is. She was in the audiences of many of the punk gigs. Any ideas anyone? No I'm not a stalker only curious.
They should have dressed a little different and they could have gotten into the post punk/ goth rock scene in the 80s with a song this awesome. I know, I should shut up. But it's a free country. I still love this song.
Jesus! What an overcooked little Radish Mick Hucknall was/is.
Anyroad...Without this band The manic Street Preachers would have not existed. Without this band we would be musically lost. Our timeline is blessed with their memory.
No flashing lights. No pyrotechnics. No dance routines. No mindless, pappy lyrics. No matching outfits. No gimmicks. Literally...NO SHIT.
Does anyone have footage of 'Big Dummy,' 'My Tulpa,' or 'Give Me Everything?' A post for Christmas would be awesome (54 uploading days left, if Santa is listening).
A pity they never had mohawks and studded leather jackets. So it's bad! Vile! Just teasing folks! Brilliant band! I did have the traditional Punklook back then but I always loved bands such as Wire, Magazine or Only Ones, they made a difference. My Punk pals couldn't relate, their loss. Great post.
It STILL amazing me that theyre so CRIMINALLY overlooked.Check their first 3 albums,Real Life,Secondhand Daylight & The Correct Use Of Soap.Back 2 this clip, amazing 2 see this punk audience reduced 2 little, baby rabbits in the headlights.Like The Only Ones,Magazine were musicians who cud play with a wealth of SUPERB songs providing an overwhelming arsenal-sadly,the fickle public were underwhelmed.AND, like The Only Ones, one day theyll receive due recognition as a truly great band.Ta 4 the post!
if you look carefully, you can spot a young Mick Hucknal, ( spelled right? ),from Simply Red, in the crowd. This was during his punk days, about the time he was in a group called the Desperate Bicycles

Playing music that no one has ever thought of before is what punk is. At least the best punk bands play music unheard of.

No, Visage. Also has worked with Birthday Party, and Pete Shelley on his excellent second album XL1.

But this band were incredible, with the late great John McGeoch.

He's the ginger twat right at the front by the monitor speaker. The only blemish on an otherwise faultless performance.
