@FuckTheSystem321 I believe there is no tips. But in the Lesson #5 you'll find explanation of meaning of kanji and closer look into all pieces. And believe me, that after few games, recognizing pieces won't be a problem at all.
@yashirokyu Ye yeah, i know, saw it lately. I began to practice the kanjis meaning and im getting better playing the game but memorize it kanjis imply a headache lol. This videos will makes me an amateur-pro gamer, i guess ._. Thanks, i ll gonna practice harder.
i feel like i'd enjoy this form of chess, it looks like it would be a hell of a lot harder than chess, given you can re-use captured pieces. thanks for the tutorial!
@AHybrten No, it's not necessary. But once you learn how to do it, it's hard to not do it. I feel uncomfortable if I can't make the snapping sound with my pieces. ^^;
I absolutely love these videos I am a big fan of Japanese pretty much everything haha. I wanted to learn Shogi really bad but i couldn't find anything until this that i really liked. You make it so easy! Also do you have any tips on memorizing the pieces because thats really the only thing i'm having trouble on because i learned how to speak some Japanese but I have always had trouble with Kanji and Hiragana. Thank you!
@EricV0ng Once a pawn, knight, lance or silver general reaches the promotional zone (three rows out from the opposing player) you may promote it. To promote the piece, you flip it over, but still face it the same direction so you know it's your piece. The promoted piece now moves like a Gold General. The promotion is permanent, unless the piece is later captured, so it can no longer move like it used to; only like a Gold General. You don't get any captured pieces back for reaching the promo zone
The lance can"t reach the last square except to check, right? They say you don't have the right to put pieces on positions where they can't move any longer.
it is such a amazing video for beginner like me!! I love your clear demonstration and your english is easy to understand. I find shogi very interesting and thanks for you.
(I know how to play western chess and chinese chess. I want to learn playing shogi long time ago but i have no way until i find the video today =) )

thankyou much for these lessos i am very knew at shogi and its actually so difficault that i have to take notes but from watching you it has helped me understand
@swspartan327 I see. Then one board game I can think of is Go or Igo. Another famous board game in Japan. But I guess it's more heard of and more reachable from America than shogi is.
@HIDETCHI: You're right, igo is much more accessible in the US. There is a very active American Go Association, and sets are pretty easy to find. They even sell sets in my local mall.
Another game that's not unheard of but far from common in North America is Go. I think it's chinese, but it's also played out on a grid. It's also very easy to get an understanding of, but has so many nuances, it takes a lifetime to master.
Does that give you something else to look into? =]
Haha, i like your first question. I think it's just like the LAMEN vs western table manner. It's considered rude to eat with so much noise, but eating LAMEN with noise means you enjoy it. They actually even make the wooden board hollow so that it'll amplify the sound when the piece hit on the board.
thank u for ur vids.ive been dying to learn shogi.and u helped.thanks alot. p.s. r u a proffesional? p.s.s. the chess pawn can only move 2 squares up on their first ove.thats the only condition
Not sure if you noticed but when you remeasured the Bishops mobility when it was on the bottom of the board, you said that it had "8" possible squares to go to and that the number was cut in half from when it was in the middle (16 squares). I just want to point out that "8" was a miscalculation, it also had the 2 sqaures diagonally up left, so that's a total of 10 possibilities. It's nothing big, just wanted to mention it. I'm really enjoying your videos though, great job. You have good English
Thanks to your clear explanation, I no longer have problems in moving the gold and silver generals! Whenever I get confused I just think: Gold Cross+ and Silver X and this helps me remember how these pieces move! Well done! Many many thanks!

You said the the gold and silver moves the same as a king?
So...
Why can't gold move to the 2 squares diagonally behind? Why can't the silver move to the squares to its left, right, and behind?

@guibin It's the same as the king *except* for those squares. Hidetchi's explanation was to make their movement easier to understand.

Thanks for leaving a comment. You seem to know the basics of Shogi already.
I still have to make basic lessons on capturing, dropping, checkmate, etc. So you have to wait (maybe a couple of weeks...) until I get to castling part. (^^;)
