  • Thanks for the great lessons! I would love a copy of your Green Onions Guide.

I would like to recommend a couple of hammond songs I really like: "Stormy Monday" by Lee Michaels and "Paul B. Allen, Omaha, NE" by Buddy Miles with Andre Lewis on organ.

  • Hi micflosi

    Thanks!

You have a copy of my guide in your YouTube message inbox.

I will check out those organ take tips of yours a bit later. Time for me to practice now.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Hi micflosi

I've checked it out. Really great! That Lee Michaels, of course, I've heard him: a tour de force frenzy highly skilled organist. Too bad he got impaired hearing and had to withdraw. I think he was sitting in front of mighty Marshal stacks and such, and that can be taxing...

The Buddy Miles jazz blues organ trio track with Lewis was new for me, even though it was on Miles probably best known own record. Superb! I enjoyed every second!

    Thanks!

    Keep swinging,

  • Please send me your guide, you got some mojo man, very cool .

  • Thanks pinetoppedro!

Good to hear that I could be of some help :-)

Actually, it was the same for me, until I by sheer luck happened to stumble upon a video interview with Booker T in, I believe, Keyboard Magazine. That little video interview was a gold mine when it came to analyzing what was going on during that intro. At least at that take :-)

You have my guide in your YouTube message inbox.

  • Hi Rounder I was wondering if you could check out this commercial Brisk Tea Babe ruth and if you can tell if thats a real song there playing also what type of organ. Thank you

  • Hi NorthernSoulKing

I've checked that animated ad out now.

It sounds like a specially made ad jingle. The organ sound is pretty close to the 'Hammond B-3' sound, but it's hard to tell what organ/keyboard they are using, as it is just a few notes in a 30 sec ad. It can be a B-3/C-3 or a clonewheel or something else.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

    Many Thankings,

    P.

    ;^)

  • Hi flopflip

    Thanks!

I have sent my Green Onions guide to your YouTube message inbox.

Here are, in short, what drawbar registrations and settings I'm using for this song:

Upper manual 88 8740 000. No Chorus. No Percussion. Leslie simulator Stop position.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • This is fantastic. I have always loved this song and you have really impressed me with your playing. I have just started playing the piano and I would love to try this. I would love to see and play the guide you have made. If you still do the guide may I have a copy to practice with.

    Yours

    Tim.

  • Thanks Tim!

I have sent my Green Onions guide to your YouTube message inbox.

Follow the guide to the letter and you will improve your playing capability to a great extent, if you just accept two things :-) One, it will take time to be a better player, and two, you must be willing putting in those practicing hours on a regular basis. But, then the reward will come, as it's great fun to play when one feel improvements!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • This seems like an excellent tutorial to a fantastic song. Subscribed!

  • hey man, any way you could send me your written guide? Just got a nord electro 3, I'm addicted to that B3 sound, and I just can't get enough!

  • Hi DJ QuantumProphecy

    You've got really good gear!

I've sent my Green Onions guide to your YouTube message inbox.

Keep swinging at your Electro 3,

    Rounder

  • Hi Rounder,

Please send me your Green Onions guide and any Nord C1 tips or URLs you've found helpful. I'm new to playing and to the C1 and haven't found many C1 specific sources. Your C1 Reg & Settings are much appreciated.

    Stay in the groove!

    Pete

  • Thanks Pete!

You have my guide in your YouTube message inbox.

C1 tips: Nothing special I can think of right now. But see the C1 as a Hammond B-3 clone with a Leslie simulator, which means that playing tips/techniques for the B-3/Leslie generally will work with the C1.

You might be interested in checking out some of my videos, as I'm using specific jazz organ techniques like 'machine gun' tremolos, slides between manuals, thumps/pop's, etc.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Utterly superb! Can't thank you enough, Rounder. More soon, I hope.

    thank you

  • Hi rounder , saw some of your vids here on you tube , at first only to hear how a nord sounds , but immediately liked how you play (smile....) and I would see it as a nice challenge to learn how to play that piece . I have lessons for learning to play but often watch vids on you tube to see how people play , one can learn a lot from watching their techniques , your vids are a very good example for that , thanks a lot !!!!!!!! Pleaaaase send me your guide......

    play happy , electroqueen

  • Hi electroqueen

    Thanks!

I find it useful myself to watch players hands as a way of learning, and thought that maybe I could be of some small help for others, even though I'm no Joey DeFrancesco. So that's the reason I record with an overhead camcorder view.

My guide for learning how to play Green Onions is waiting for you in your YouTube message inbox.

  • Thank you for putting this together. The video is really useful for learning how Green Onions is to be played. Seeing and listening to a performance communicates a great deal of valuable information.

  • Hi Salmon

Thanks! It's good to hear that you find my overhead camcorder perspective useful. I record this way for the reason you mention in your last sentence.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • I'd prefer simply sheets very much better, than 1700 bla bla words. There is actually a language for musicans and it's called notes, not words.

  • Hi methoki

I'd love good sheets for Green Onions too :-)

Unfortunately, as far as I know, even the official sheet music is highly inaccurate, so there is a need for good sheet music for this song.

If you have time and are interested, please, do the sheet music for Green Onions with the original '62 take as source, and share it.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Hey Rounder. I can't thank you enough for working all this out and uploading these videos, i've wanted to learn how to play this for ages. I'm playing it on a casiotone 1000p as its jazz organ preset is surprisingly close to the B3 sound. I which i had some better gear like your Nord but i guess that'll do!

  • Hi Chris

It's really great to hear when my videos have been of use :-) Thanks!

Well, about gear... I'm not familiar with the Casiotone 1000p, but generally speaking we all would like to have a A-100/B-3/C-3 with two Leslie 122, don't we... The pinnacle of jazz organ gear. But they are becoming scarce as hen's teeth and not to mentioning the sheer weight of a B-3/C-3. So it's nice that we now have quite a lot of good sounding and light-weight keyboards to choose from!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u Hey brother... I normally don't play too much jazz, more 60's-70's Rock/Blues, but if you are looking for that REAL tonewheel sound, check out the Hammond M3, it has the same 'guts' (Tonewheels, percussion, drawbars, vibrato) as a B3, just with less keys... And they got for about 200 bucks! Sounds almost the same too.

  • Hi Sam/RayManzarekGod

The M-3 is a really great organ, indeed.

Booker T used it for the original '62 take of Green Onions.

The M-3 even has waterfall keys (not common in spinet organs), and that is also an important feature, in addition to the 'guts' you mentioned.

The Baby B is highly recommended :-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Thanks Rounder,

GO has been one of my mission to accomplish since getting back on the keyboard.

I've already been able to play the parts following your youtubes. I would also like a copy of you guide.

Never to make any assumptions, since we know what that can do,

I'm sure you've heard Roy Buchanan's version. I heard him live in Pittsburgh back in 1972ish. He has several others I'm sure you would like.

    Pete

  • Hi Pete

Good to hear that you have had use of my videos. I have sent my guide for learning how to play Green Onions to your YouTube message inbox.

I've heard Buchanan's version, and yes, he has other stuff that I like: You see, the best ever version I've heard of 'After Hours' is by Buchanan. The version found on his double-CD Sweet Dreams: Anthology. He has done others of the same song, but that version is the top notch one for me.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u

I did try to send my written guide to you a number of times, but I instead immedeately ended up in my own message inbox. Very strange. Never happened before. I think this is a YouTube bug.

    Keep Brazil swinging,

  • Hey Rounder. I taught myself green onions using your old guide about 3 years ago and it is still my favourite song to jam on. Would it be possible for you to send me your updated guide? Cheers.

  • Hi ruperthenrygillies

    Welcome back!

So now it's time for you to do what I did myself: Re-learn the song!

As you already have the old version under your belt you will learn this improved version rather quickly.

Just one advice: Be careful to include all small grace notes and small 'ornaments' I'm playing during my right hand solo parts. They are very important to get the song right.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Hey, would it still be possible to have that writen guide sent to my utube inbox? :)

Really appriciate what you´r doing here. :)

And do you have any tip on a cheap electric-organ sutible for R´n´B, Soul and Blues type of music? :)

I´ve just learned to play a bit of guitar and cant wait to get something like organ or piano under my fingers! :)

    Thanks again! :)

    Peace n' Love from Sweden!
