@mihaimoldo Two things. First, addiction is NOT a choice – nobody in their right mind would choose addiction. Everyone who tries drugs and alcohol believes it won't or can't happen to them. But for about 25% of the populations of Canada and the US, it does happen. And it's tough to admit because the only thing more frightening than being an addict is facing the world without your favourite substance.

Second. He has been in successful recovery and in the past has thanked his wife for her support

@Kaalec I respectfully don't agree. People do choose to drink, they do choose to take drugs, prescription and otherwise. For anyone to call this a disease, along with cancer being a disease is, in my opinion, is wrong. It lets people off the hook. Drunk drivers can't say that their disease caused them to drink and kill innocent people. People do not choose addiction. They become addicted. To add to this, most of the rehab centers are a failure, but a huge money-maker. Just an opinion. Thanks.

@gronia As a recovering addict, I'd like to tell you that you don't know what you're talking about. The science is very clear on this. Many people choose to drink, and of thjose about 20 to 25% will develop an addiction to alcohol. The rest won't. So yes, everyone chose to drink, but the addicts did not choose to develop an addiction. There is a saying in recovery, you are not responsible for your adicition, but you are responsible for your recovery.

@gronia People develop diabetes all the time. They choose to eat, and may even choose to eat too much. But they don't choose to have diabetes. Once they're diagnosed with a medical disease, they can get the treatment they need. It's the same with addictions. The responsibility part is recognizing that you have the addiction and then taking steps to overcome it.

I have been to rehab and the one I attended has an 80% success rate after five years. Have you been to one? What do you base your claim that they're a huge failure? News stories on failed celebrities? Please do more research before you make claims about addictions. Your knowledge and your attitudes are desperately out of date and uninformed. With respect.
