I just found my first ever royal-blue columbia. After sifting through tens of thousands of records over the years, I finally just 'ran across' one. So in my research, go figure, I landed here! :) Very cool. Im excited, Even if the music on this particular record is just 'ok'..
@78Revolutions Congratulations! Finding these are always fun. Sorry this song is not to your liking. I have quite a few others posted too from different genres. I'll be looking forward to hearing the one you found..
@althazarr I meant the song on MINE is just 'ok', I was disparaging your record. But I love it just the same! Amazing that a marketing ploy from 80 years ago is still working today, as this record quickly stood out from all the others. I gave a deep cleaning since bringing it home, and the color is really vibrant now.
@78Revolutions I think they're all great. What artist/title did you find?Their marketing ploy sure worked on me too. I love the different colored shellacs.
@althazarr Mine is # G-9078-M, And says "imported Recording" to the left of the spindle hole. "Die Fledermaus: Finale, Act 2 - Herr Chevalier, Ich Grusse Sie. The other side is "Die Flaudermaus: Genug, damit, Genug. Both are credited to Johann Strauss. These are operas performed at the Berlin Opera House.Havent really found out much about it. I just know that it was the third record I pulled out of about 150 I got today for free, and could not have been more excited to finally have 1!
Thanks so much for posting this and for your wonderful biography notes.
Agree the last note was a bad mistake.
He wanted to make a louder note which is nigh impossible with the closed umlaut sound. So instead of doing it quietly as Schubert obviously intended, he opened the vowel making a more substantial but ugly sound.
Just a miscalculation..
I'm sure that when he himself heard it he was horrified, but by then it was too late.
I have to agree, it was certainly not his best note by far. There is a set of 8 of these great Blue Columbia's I got recently, and this was the first one I posted. I'll try to get the other 7 up soon.

Kipnis' low notes are the envy of all basses, but that final note was aweful (by his standards)! It the umlaut u sounded like he was vomiting.
The rest of the song, beautiful as is everything sung by one of the greatest basses in recorded history!
