i recently bought myself a 1981 Yamaha Maxim550 in near mint condition. i plan on doing some work on her before i get her on the road next spring. new guages, getting the dent out of the gas tank, and repainting it. and rebuilding the carbs as well. she runs good except for the leaking carbs... oh well!! i have 2 sets. one on(originals) one off. the spares.

My Dad use to have a KZ600 The same year. his was the same color red. a cool color i allways wanted to see on these cool kz's was Black, silver on the sides of the gastank, and gold pinstriping around the silver and black outline. and a Cafe Style seat, and Black front fender with no rear fender.
@Darkfloyd73 Thanks for the comment Darkfloyd!! I like your idea for the SR painted black with silver and gold pinstriping, I think that would look very smooth and a bit menacing. Comb over Ebay and craigslist for a good starter bike and put your idea to work!
@650sr yes you are correct. I had issues with the vacuum oem one leaking all the time and a rebuild kit never fixed the problem. I had a gravity fed petcock laying around so I put it on the tank so I could drive the thing for once without it leaking gas all over the engine. Perhaps one day I will get around to putting the vacuum petcock back on if I can get it to stop leaking.
I have this exact same bike. KZ650D SR. I am having problems with the fuel tank. mine has a hole on each side of the tank for petcocks, but they are both different sizes! Any advice on where i could track them down? Is this bike even supposed to have 2 petcocks?
wow, i had a new red one in 78 and mine faded exactly like that within a couple years. That bike's not in TN by any chance?

if u look up item number 140561318870 on uk e-bay this is the petcock u need not gravity fed one

yes just fill one on right hand side of tank as u sit on bike up there will be no problems
