Here's dodge releasing a challenger at just the wrong time.. AGAIN! It's even more like 1970 than Chrysler intended!
Instead, they should have made it more like the 78 Challenger (which actually lasted longer than the original!). Maybe a new 78 challenger would be a Fiat instead of Mitsubishi though.
It was very light car, especially for a Challenger
yeah thats what i was thinking to man. it better be at least 400+ hp ... but hey look at the bright sight the new engine will have lots of more ft lb of torque on it!! more torque more fun...
$45,000 for that car? I'm VERY glad I got my 2006 GTO for "only" $32,000. You can pick up a very good used one for ~$20k. 400hp stock and with a few upgrades well over 500hp. 11.89sec 1/4 mile @ 118mph and still gets 22mpg on the highway.
These car prices read like science fiction. $45k. Good God.
On a 6.0L GTO, you can add ~75hp with a cold-air intake, headers and a cam. Then another 75 with heads, plenum, cat-back exhaust and a custom cam + programming.
Added to the cost of the $32k new car cost, the total was ~$40,000, but I have a very reliable daily-driver that runs sub-12 second 1/4 miles all day long. It could be duplicated for ~$25-$26K today.
You can see and hear it in a video on my channel. It's a 12:16 run, but I wasn't quite finished with it yet.
Yeah the GXP does out power and is slightly cheaper too. I'd take G8 GXP. I finally liked the FLD tours today. Matt is a good host and was honest. I test drove one of these cars and he described it well. I felt cheap and fat in the car.
i do believe the Pontiac G8 GXP is a little cheaper than a Challenger SRT-8 and has 400 hp. but ill let Matt slide on that comment he is still the man
I'm not sure how I feel about these smaller engines. I think it'll be harder for someone (like me) who likes big roaring engines to have something to look forward to in the future. The S85 engine is one of my favorites and that is even on the chopping block now. I guess it's time to hit the lotto and collect the last of the 8, 10 and, 12 cylinder cars... hahaha
Matt should do more of the FLDetours. He pointed out all the best features while he remained realistic about them. At the same time Matt managed to hit every gripe I had about the Challenger, and added one with the steering wheel, (had not noticed that before). When you consider the weight of the Challenger the carbon fiber hood graphics are stupid, then again fake is always stupid, go with real carbon fiber or go home. Still that Dodge has great lines.
The old "real" challenger compared to the new one is so much better in style sound and power. I would take the old school over new school even if the new one were given to me I'd sell it and buy an old one. The new one is bulky. It looks over sized...ugly.
you can buy a brand new corvette for $45,000 right now. It's only the ZR1 that's over a hundred. And buying an old Muscle car that's in good shape and putting a modern drivetrain in it could easily cost $50,000+
Its about time we are getting a mag lev here in the states I think the bail out should have been putting G.M. and Dodge to work on the rail cars. Rather than a hand out let them work of it.
Thats the real way to save sports cars. Look at Japan they have a way higher percentage of sports cars and everyone uses a train and they can have thier sports cars for when they want to drive.
These new government regulations on cars are the worst. America is a capitalist country, that means the consumer and producers decide what the economy does. I don't think that some politician in Washington deserves to tell me what car I can buy. I am not willing to give up my muscle cars. If gas prices spike again then the consumers and producers will change. That isn't the job of the government.
I did actually drive a GTO. Great drivetrain, awful interior. Kind of like my Corvette. I just hated the way it looked. I much preferred that car as a Holden. On the other hand, the G8 GXP is phenomenal. All american sedans should be just like that and the CTS-V.
What's happening? FLD is being viewed less and less as each day goes by. I assure you, it's got nothing to do with the quality of the show. The show is great and I watch it between work breaks.
i agree that 90k a year seems much but what job and how long you been there should factor in if it 90k after 15yrs i think its justified and i purpose does any CEO or worker need more than 400,000 a year there r other cuts that could be made first
Wrong. Poor overall designs have done the most damage.
If these companies made cars with more of the features that the Jap-big3 offer, why wouldnt Americans buy more of them?
Sure higher wages nip at profits, especially the over-the-top auto-industry unions(Im a teamster, and my wages/benefits are hardly desirable =\ ).
But this wouldnt even begin to be an issue if the US big3 had always offered what they do now instead of waiting for economic decline and rising energy costs...
Derek: why do you want a car that can fly?? where will you land it? or what happens if you crash on air? I mean a feder-bender at 2000ft is gonna be slightly worse than you might think
not just that, bmw's engines are ALOT lighter then american engines, for instance their 3 litre 6 cylinder dont even weigh 400 lbs the engine itself. pretty impresive stuff.
just make sure you do an FLDetours on the new CAMARO SS when you can get your hands on one, (more horsepower: 426, weighs less, costs less, faster to 60: 4.7 sec, bigger engine: 6.2L V8) i just love the SS more than just about anything else (that is relatively comparable) on the road today. good show overall, and while the challenger isn't for me, it was a good review. keep up the good work!
As for the challenger i have to say the joy of getting a HI PO car is everytime something breakes you replace it with the highest performence part there is.
Anything to help Chrysler. I just want all the Big Three to stay financially afloat. I've never been a real Cadillac fan, so why would I Care about WiFi in a Caddy? Interesting solar train idea. The next M3 with... a turbo 6-cylinder (6-banger?)? Can't remember too many turbo BMWs... I sat in the newer Challenger, and feels pretty nice. It's a modern muscle car. Sweet car. Have a lovely weekend as well!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! the BMW M3 NEEDS to have a naturally aspirated engine. i'd rather they put in a less powerful N/A inline 6, than put turbos on one. :( it would ruin the character of the M3.
well it's interesting. i do love the v8, it's high revving and very powerful, but the 2002 m3 was a v6 (i think with turbos? im not sure...) and it was one of the greatest ones yet. But if they do add turbos, there is a possibily of turbo lag. Which isn't good, if you've ever driven an evo 8.
There isn't a single turbocharged German car on the market today, that has got a turbo lag. Smooth power delivery is what they seem to care about the most.
the only engines from BMW that have come with turbos are the N54 (twin turbo inline 6) and the N63 (twin turbo V8 in X6). an M car has NEVER had turbos before. and BMW has NEVER produced a V6. and i'm not worried about turbo lag (the N54 has virtually none), i think it would destroy the character of an M car. btw, the E46 M3 (around 2002) was a N/A inline 6 (S54). trust me. i know my BMW's.
i know it will be faster. i know it will have more torque. i just don't think they should turbo an M3. make a different M model with turbos. and yes i agree they've strayed away from the tradition and roots of the original M3, but i think this would just be too far. as an E36 M3 owner, i really hope they make some other M model with turbo(s), just not the M3. make an M1 (which would be crazy fast :P) or some other M2/4 or something. i just don't want them to mess with the M3 formula.
I hope that they don't badge the 500 as a Chrysler. I don't have anything against Chrysler, I just think the concept of captive imports is kinda dumb.
awesome ep, seems like eco restriction has done some good to stop the M3 from growing up too much (in engine size). L6 is my favorite BMW engine of ALL times!

I think its fine- Its going to make it lighter, more agile, and faster- at the expense of it being jerkier. Id love to have one
On the other hand mercedes AMG making their E63 a smaller displacement and turbo is not okay because you buy a car like that for its smooth power.

UAW killed the American car. Since when do factory workers deserve $90K/year plus benefits?
I'll buy foreign until the unions are done ruining the industry, thank you very much.
m015094 2 years ago
i agree that 90k a year seems much but what job and how long you been there should factor in if it 90k after 15yrs i think its justified and i purpose does any CEO or worker need more than 400,000 a year there r other cuts that could be made first
FrankinStoner 2 years ago
the auto companies didnt have to give in that much, but they did cuase they thought they could still make money,,,,and you sound a little jelous
thesixshot 2 years ago
Why would I be jealous of a job that makes less than I do?
Yes, auto companies DID have to give them that much. That's the whole point. If they didn't have to deal with the UAW union the
1. employees wouldn't be paid as much
2. the cost of the cars would go down
3. the cars would be more competitive with the non-union made cars
The forced UAW contracts basically forced US car companies to make inferior cars for the past 30 years.
m015094 2 years ago
i totally agree with you. i mean unions are nice and all but seriously they killed american car companies.
doggiepowers 2 years ago
But this wouldnt even begin to be an issue if the US big3 had always offered what they do now instead of waiting for economic decline and rising energy costs...
privatepadilla 2 years ago
we need to just let the companies go bankrupt, these bailouts are a joke,,, let the market take care of it self,,,
thesixshot 2 years ago 2
Amen to that!
Even US factory workers for Honda and Toyota don't make that much since they're not in the UAW

As far as the Challenger goes: Buy it. Strip it. Run it.

Derek: why do you want a car that can fly?? where will you land it? or what happens if you crash on air? I mean a feder-bender at 2000ft is gonna be slightly worse than you might think

Notice how BMW's 4-liter V8 makes just as much power as a big 6.1 from Dodge
bottomlayer 2 years ago
not just that, bmw's engines are ALOT lighter then american engines, for instance their 3 litre 6 cylinder dont even weigh 400 lbs the engine itself. pretty impresive stuff.
guitaristwagner 2 years ago
just make sure you do an FLDetours on the new CAMARO SS when you can get your hands on one, (more horsepower: 426, weighs less, costs less, faster to 60: 4.7 sec, bigger engine: 6.2L V8) i just love the SS more than just about anything else (that is relatively comparable) on the road today. good show overall, and while the challenger isn't for me, it was a good review. keep up the good work!

You know its better that bmw m division makes more fuel efficient FASTER CARS. The new bmw m3 will get a 6 cyl engine with 420 bhp not 414 ;]

JohnMarineTube 2 years ago
a return to its roots???? who the fuck thinks that? it's straying further from its roots. turbos and M cars DO NOT mix (imo).
otmlb1128 2 years ago
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! the BMW M3 NEEDS to have a naturally aspirated engine. i'd rather they put in a less powerful N/A inline 6, than put turbos on one. :( it would ruin the character of the M3.
otmlb1128 2 years ago
well it's interesting. i do love the v8, it's high revving and very powerful, but the 2002 m3 was a v6 (i think with turbos? im not sure...) and it was one of the greatest ones yet. But if they do add turbos, there is a possibily of turbo lag. Which isn't good, if you've ever driven an evo 8.
hteverow 2 years ago
It was a I-6 with out Turbo's.
seroyer2 2 years ago 2
There isn't a single turbocharged German car on the market today, that has got a turbo lag. Smooth power delivery is what they seem to care about the most.
I mean BMW isn't Mitsubishi or Subaru.
sspope 2 years ago
the only engines from BMW that have come with turbos are the N54 (twin turbo inline 6) and the N63 (twin turbo V8 in X6). an M car has NEVER had turbos before. and BMW has NEVER produced a V6. and i'm not worried about turbo lag (the N54 has virtually none), i think it would destroy the character of an M car. btw, the E46 M3 (around 2002) was a N/A inline 6 (S54). trust me. i know my BMW's.
otmlb1128 2 years ago
dude one word: TORQUE!!
the new engine will have lots of it
something that previous and current m3's always lack of.
i thinks it great that its getting a turbocharger it will only advance overall performance and faster 0-60 times..
and btw what the hell do u mean by m3 character? do you mean it's m3 roots?? if yes then it lost it since the E46 M3 model..
ChicanoLX805 2 years ago
i know it will be faster. i know it will have more torque. i just don't think they should turbo an M3. make a different M model with turbos. and yes i agree they've strayed away from the tradition and roots of the original M3, but i think this would just be too far. as an E36 M3 owner, i really hope they make some other M model with turbo(s), just not the M3. make an M1 (which would be crazy fast :P) or some other M2/4 or something. i just don't want them to mess with the M3 formula.
otmlb1128 2 years ago
I hope that they don't badge the 500 as a Chrysler. I don't have anything against Chrysler, I just think the concept of captive imports is kinda dumb.
Hey DD: Don't get eliminated!

Oh Lord, I hope not!
The SRT-4 is one of the few good cars left that Chrysler still builds, I'm gonna be disappointed if they turn it into a captive import.

Cadillac : Because we believe in texting, driving and running someone over without knowing it with our overrides SUVs.
BMW M3 6 cyl, it was fast, viscous, power on demand, exciting in small package
MBW M3 8 cyl, it's like using Viagra, bid, dull, not so exciting, just an over kill.

awesome ep, seems like eco restriction has done some good to stop the M3 from growing up too much (in engine size). L6 is my favorite BMW engine of ALL times!
