  • sounds like leonard nimoy (mr. spock) on that bell telephone commercial

  • Wow, they mentioned Best in the West. I remember watching that with my parents and brother and sister when I was 7

  • crazy he gets fired by the mets and had a dynasty with the yanks see yankees rule lol

  • @retroguy1976 Anyone could have won those Yankee teams. With the Mets his teams never won more than like 70 games in 5 years.

  • The Sassoon logo would never have been displayed in Brazil.

  • The girl at 4:51 knows what she talking about

  • Joe ended up managing for every franchise he ever played for - the Mets, Braves and Cardinals.

  • @MegaObserver1 Don't forget the Yankees and the Dodgers. When Steinbrenner hired Torre back in 1996, everyone in New York were skeptical but were proved wrong when Torre led the Yanks back to the World Series title that year.

  • If the Wilpons' bring him back, they'd better give them the tools to win. The current squad might suck a little less under Torre like the Orioles under Buck Showalter, but that's pretty much it. He's a great manager, but he's not a miracle worker.

  • Leonard Nimoy is entitled to a royalty for this video being posted.

  • Great video. Love the commercials!!!

  • The sasson jeans commercial is hillarious and the wedding story is just bazaar. I like when the sports reporter says, "is that a real story?" lol

  • Mr. Spock did Bell commercials

  • Who's laughing now? Joe is.

  • you got it wrong...1984 mets were a lot better than the 1981 mets.

  • @nognilk They rebuilt mostly through the draft- drafting people like Strawberry, Gooden and Lenny Dykstra. . .and by free-agency and trades (e.g. Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and Ray Knight). . . it took them a few years but they were able to turn things around and eventually win it all.

  • 2004 Red Sox*

    2007 Red Sox*

  • Learn to spell. We'll take you seriously then.

  • torre found out that a $200M payroll and a team full of steroid shooting cheaters can win you a lot!

  • the yankees wern't steroids users and i'm a Bo Sox fan that was just A-rod and Giambi everyone else has natrual talent Derek Jeter a young Jorge Posada a young robinson cano they were all great hitters that's why they one so two guys on there team juiced so what everyone else had natrual talent dipshit

  • Your so stupid. The Yankees didn't have any steroid shooters in 96'. I'll give it to you that they had some steroid shooters on the following Yankee championships but so did the rest of the league. Torre is a good manager. You have to be a certain type of guy to handle NY's media and fans. Not to mention The Boss. So stop being a tool.

  • What team hasn't?

  • He learned from that experience and he went on to become a great manager.

  • and no he is not a great manager he again had a great team behind him that's why he won so many games he sucked before the yanks like here he sucked as a manager

  • The following year Torre led the Braves to the pennant! :o)

  • Joe Torre was an exceptional ballplayer, I saw him play in his last years with the Mets, which he also managed quite well, despite the fact that the players were awful. Being the great baseball man he is, he excelled as manager later with better teams. This explains the warm welcome that Mr. Torre got as manager of L.A. upon visiting N.Y.C. After going out to remove a pitcher , he got a standing ovation. Mets fans never forget a class act!

  • AHHHHH........THE 80'S!!!!!

  • Oh, so Joe Torre sucked as a manager back then too?

  • 4 rings in ny? im not saying hes great but he doesnt suck

  • Comment removed

  • Billy Martin managing the Mets?

Now, that would have been entertaining.

  • Billy Martin as Mets manager would make quite a difference.

  • He was a good manager, but also had drinking problems.

  • Those Sasson commercials remind me of that Ron Dugay NY Rangers hockey player.

  • lee mazz had a bad 'stache...

  • Joe Torre is like Casey Stengel. Does nothing before he comes to the Yankees, and does nothing after he leaves the Yankees. Was it because he had all the players? Or was it because he was such a good manager? You decide.

  • Seen what the Dodgers have been doing this season? That's Torre!

  • It's because of Manny... the Dodgers have no one..

  • Matt Kemp, andre eithier juan pierre orlando hudson rafeal furcal casey blake so yes they do have people

  • I think both. With the Yankees, he had the players and could manage them and press the right buttons. With the Mets, Braves etc. he didn't have the players to manage.

  • Mets need to fire Willie right now and bring in some fresh meat. Go Mets 08!

  • Getting fired from the Mets was the best thing that ever happened to him. He was promptly hired by the Braves & led them to the playoffs in '82, and almost made it again in '83. And what became of the Mets after they fired Joe? - They finished last in the NL East in both '82 & '83. The Mets never knew what they had in Torre, and probably would have won more than one Championship if he rather than Davey Johnson was their manager during the glory years of 1984-88.

  • The Commercials remind Me of RoboCop!!!

  • hells yeah!

  • torre can't wipe the smile off his face. that job stunk anyway

  • 4 rings!! How does that suck

  • because he decided to give up after 2004, he said it himself

  • Wow...who knew what would take place 15 years later?

  • what amazing is that his depature from Mets got *No publicty?*

Actually it's 26 years later Devils, not 15 years later.

While his deapture from the Yankees got wall-wall news headline coverage in NYC at 2007 season.

  • No, I meant 15 years after this happened, he came back to New York with the Yankees and won the World Series.

I don't think the media hyped things up as much back then. You didn't have wall-to-wall coverage of an event unless it was something really big. The news didn't give sports that much attention in those days and ESPN was just beginning.

  • Joe Torre is a class act.

  • this is like KGO in1985

  • Funny to see Lee Mazzili talking about how disappointing it is to see a manager fired. Hey Maz - as a long-suffering Orioles fan, I couldn't exactly say the same about the day you got broken off. And I don't think too many of the players that went from first place to fourth in a matter of five weeks missed you either.

  • rofl @ news back then

    valon te duaaaaa papi<33333333

    \o/

  • How ironic is it that Lee Mazzilli goes on to be one of Joe Torre's coaches?

  • So what do you do with a chubby dog?

  • Ooh La La Sasson! WOW!

  • love those old commercials!

  • How classy is Joe? What a mensch! He deserved what he got 15 years later.

  • dude the commercials are the best part!

  • THE COMMERCIALS ARE AWFUL!!! But great vid.

  • terrible quality...but a GREAT clip. Can you re-post it without all the pixilating dissolves?

  • I apologize for the quality. I have no idea why it does this cause when I play the original clip it's fine. This is from an old BETA VHS tape.

  • I'm with HiimBrady, the commercials ARE the best part!

  • I didnt know Gil Noble was part of the WABC news desk at one time!!

  • torre is an overrated buffoon,,,great piece of footage.

  • What a trip this is!!! I remember all of these news casters but what's funnier are the commercials. Hard to believe this is 25 + years ago. Time surely does fly!!

  • Wolfsie & Licht on a morning show at 9:30 am on channel 7 in New York? No way! This was before Regis Philbin came to the Morning Show a year or so later (or whatever it was called, AM New York?). I know Judy Licht also had worked as the nightly newscaster with John Roland on WNYW a year earlier, too. I wonder why she was dumped from the station to host the show before Regis? Where is Judy Licht now?

  • Judy Licht does fashion reporting. She's a host on the show Full Frontal Fashion that airs on WNYE (Ch 25) in NYC.

  • Heh, Lee Mazzilli with a mustache...

  • By the way, the voice over for the Bell phone ad is that of Leonard "Mr. Spock" Nimoy.

  • When you have to build a lineup around Dave Kingman and your ace in the rotation is Pat Zachary they're lucky Joe didn't quit after the first half of the season! Bamberger fared far worse in his 1 1/2 years than Joe did, the Mets regressed terribly in 82 and most of 83. While Torre guided the Braves to the NLCS.

  • Billy Martin's "calm" at Shea.

  • Nice story guys.

  • The commercials are what make this great. OO la la Sassoon!!

  • He shouldn't of drank so much Bigelow Tea.
