@MegaObserver1 Don't forget the Yankees and the Dodgers. When Steinbrenner hired Torre back in 1996, everyone in New York were skeptical but were proved wrong when Torre led the Yanks back to the World Series title that year.
If the Wilpons' bring him back, they'd better give them the tools to win. The current squad might suck a little less under Torre like the Orioles under Buck Showalter, but that's pretty much it. He's a great manager, but he's not a miracle worker.
@nognilk They rebuilt mostly through the draft- drafting people like Strawberry, Gooden and Lenny Dykstra. . .and by free-agency and trades (e.g. Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and Ray Knight). . . it took them a few years but they were able to turn things around and eventually win it all.

god this is my fourth comment none of you people who think you know alot about baseball know nothing your making comments that make no sense at all the dodgers have no one withount Manny rameriez the yankees are juicers what the hell two people on the yanks used steroids the other again Natrual tale t and the dodgers have plenty of better players on thir team so get ur facts right retards of
the yankees wern't steroids users and i'm a Bo Sox fan that was just A-rod and Giambi everyone else has natrual talent Derek Jeter a young Jorge Posada a young robinson cano they were all great hitters that's why they one so two guys on there team juiced so what everyone else had natrual talent dipshit
Your so stupid. The Yankees didn't have any steroid shooters in 96'. I'll give it to you that they had some steroid shooters on the following Yankee championships but so did the rest of the league. Torre is a good manager. You have to be a certain type of guy to handle NY's media and fans. Not to mention The Boss. So stop being a tool.
and no he is not a great manager he again had a great team behind him that's why he won so many games he sucked before the yanks like here he sucked as a manager
Joe Torre was an exceptional ballplayer, I saw him play in his last years with the Mets, which he also managed quite well, despite the fact that the players were awful. Being the great baseball man he is, he excelled as manager later with better teams. This explains the warm welcome that Mr. Torre got as manager of L.A. upon visiting N.Y.C. After going out to remove a pitcher , he got a standing ovation. Mets fans never forget a class act!
Joe Torre is like Casey Stengel. Does nothing before he comes to the Yankees, and does nothing after he leaves the Yankees. Was it because he had all the players? Or was it because he was such a good manager? You decide.
I think both. With the Yankees, he had the players and could manage them and press the right buttons. With the Mets, Braves etc. he didn't have the players to manage.
Getting fired from the Mets was the best thing that ever happened to him. He was promptly hired by the Braves & led them to the playoffs in '82, and almost made it again in '83. And what became of the Mets after they fired Joe? - They finished last in the NL East in both '82 & '83. The Mets never knew what they had in Torre, and probably would have won more than one Championship if he rather than Davey Johnson was their manager during the glory years of 1984-88.
No, I meant 15 years after this happened, he came back to New York with the Yankees and won the World Series.
I don't think the media hyped things up as much back then. You didn't have wall-to-wall coverage of an event unless it was something really big. The news didn't give sports that much attention in those days and ESPN was just beginning.
Funny to see Lee Mazzili talking about how disappointing it is to see a manager fired. Hey Maz - as a long-suffering Orioles fan, I couldn't exactly say the same about the day you got broken off. And I don't think too many of the players that went from first place to fourth in a matter of five weeks missed you either.
What a trip this is!!! I remember all of these news casters but what's funnier are the commercials. Hard to believe this is 25 + years ago. Time surely does fly!!
Wolfsie & Licht on a morning show at 9:30 am on channel 7 in New York? No way! This was before Regis Philbin came to the Morning Show a year or so later (or whatever it was called, AM New York?). I know Judy Licht also had worked as the nightly newscaster with John Roland on WNYW a year earlier, too. I wonder why she was dumped from the station to host the show before Regis? Where is Judy Licht now?
When you have to build a lineup around Dave Kingman and your ace in the rotation is Pat Zachary they're lucky Joe didn't quit after the first half of the season! Bamberger fared far worse in his 1 1/2 years than Joe did, the Mets regressed terribly in 82 and most of 83. While Torre guided the Braves to the NLCS.
