Great performance! What a bad think that Madame Gavazzi was one of many talented Italian sopranos from the 1950s, who were eclipsed by the likes of Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas. She possessed a powerful, warm and vibrant voice combined with expressive delivery and fine musicianship.
A great performance by a great artist. It's unfortunate that she is little known outside Italy; the irritating Stefan Zucker includes this scene in his Opera Fanatic film. Carla Gavazzi died in May of this year, at the age of 95. She is not forgotten. Brava!
What a great artist was Carla Gavazzi! A peerless Verismo interpreter with a beautiful voice to which her recordings did not always do justice! This film does!
Carla Gavazzi deserved a bigger career, she had a very good voice (much better than Olivero) and she was a refined and great artist (better than Olivero, Tucci, Pobbe and others second rate italian sopranos, Clara Petrella was a disaster! horrible Petrella Manon Lescaut and Tabarro in this website)
I totally agree with you. Gavazzi should have had a bigger career - although she withdrew from the stage in 1959 (if my sources are correct). However, fantastic expression in her voice. I love her Violetta excerpt in the Opera Fanatic film - she seemed such a lovely lady. Brava Gavazzi
@MusicaParola All true...including Stefan Zucker being horrendously irritating, speaking in his ridiculous falsetto and saying that it is just his voice when he lets out huge laughter in his baritone or who know (or cares) what. Such a missed opportunity to speak with all of those marvelous singers...
Its so moving...in this horrible film with zucker- its so moving when she said: la Musica...let us speak about La musica...Her Smile...
She must be a great Woman.
So what that she has a troubled voice. You can feel her presence...today she would be a superstar...BRAVA E GRAZIE...Sleep well Carlita
