@11792654 Well said. Who can sing like this today? I'm sorry to report: no one. Oneguin65: thank you for posting this rare look and sound, much appreciated...
The only thing that bothers me is, and even though I just love him, but why is Ettore so expressionless while Franco is singing so emotionally beautiful???
i will see "forza" next week. I'am afraid voices like these will not be heard anymore but this opera has its own fantastic strength inside. i am sure i will enjoy it
i can't believe those assholes throwing the vegetables at the stage at the end. Makes me so mad that these guys had no appreciation for the immense artists they were hearing. Today we would kill to hear two singers like this.
ALVARO Solenne in quest'ora Giurami dovete Far pago un mio voto. CARLO Lo giuro. ALVARO Sul core cercate. CARLO Una chiave. ALVARO indicando la valigia Con essa trarrete Un piego celato! L'affido all'onore, Colà v'ha un mistero Che meco morrà. S'abbruci me spento. CARLO Lo giuro, sarà. ALVARO Or muoio tranquillo; Vi stringo al cor mio. CARLO lo abbraccia con grande emozione Amico, fidate nel cielo! Addio. ALVARO Addio.
This is pure beauty. Two heavenly voices, two handsome men and the wonderful chemistry... they were good friends in real life too and it's visible in their harmony.
Yes, bloydaage Tucker was terrific in the role with Warren live at the met in the 50's and later with Merrill and really was a favorite of many and that includes myself. This is a great duet.
If I ever audition tenors I'm going to set up a couch next to the piano to make sure they're breathing correctly :) Correlli sets an excellent example for young tenors here.
What SUBLIMITY! The two REALLY GREAT HUMAN BEINGS and MARVELLOUS ARTISTS! No, they were not what one might suspect them to be, they were "only" best friends. And even from the words they are saying you can't conclude such a thing (there were no such connotations in the 19th century opera), Alvaro and Don Carlo Vargas (under false names) were actually friends until they found out about each other's true identity.

One of my favorite duets. Corelli's messa di voce is superb and the rest of his singing is electric, and of course, Bastianini...you don't need to may more than BASTIANINI. Sublime!
@daddy2foots Ettore Bastianini is my favourite... in my mind one the few baritone singers who can match and outmatch most great singers of the past. Even Callas and Corelli had difficulty out-singing him... he really was a bass with terrific high notes...

I am a passionate adorer of Forza. This duo is perhaps the very best I have heard! Imagine singing this well while lying down!! Please keep in mind that grand opera includes both brilliant singing as well as fine acting. This rendition captures both in breathtaking beauty.
This is very well sung, by both. Actually this is one of the best I`ve heard. Well done to produce that sound when lying down!!!! Can`t understand why someone throws tomatos after this!!! Sick people ( Scala???)
Also don't forget the pearl fishers duet for the most beautiful duet with tenor/baritone, perhaps the most beautiful and why the throwing? are they crazy?
I think its amazing that this video even exists. To see two of the giants of the era perform one of the most amazing duets is fantastic. Without Youtube, how many opera fans would never experience this? Thank you Youtube, and many thanx to Oneguin65 for posting this
@kazakhman52 I agree! One of the great tenor-baritone duets in all of opera sung so beautifully by two giants of their era. I had the good fortune of hearing Bastianini sing at the Lyric in Chicago. What a voice!
This is perhaps the most romantic duet between two males in the whole opera literature. The only one that is comparable is the duet from "The Pearlsfishers" - "Au fond du temple saint" - both the interpreters are absolutely in the mood of this lovely duet!
To all posters, the chemistry you see is merely due to the fact that Corelli and Bastianini were best friends.Early in Franco's career,Ettore supported him and when Ettore had cancer,Dario help him to perform in the Met.
Unbelievable! I have this on CD but never realized Corelli was prostrate throughout the entire duet. To sing those 2 diminuendi on his back is one of the greatest feats of singing you'll ever hear. Spinal chills! You don't hear singing like this any more. Corelli might not have been the "best" singer technically but, for my money, he (along with early Luciano) was the most thrilling. I don't care how much they touched each other if they can produce sounds like that.
Dirtbag, you are spot-on. But a tenor does not sing like Corelli and NOT be technically correct. The nuances he sings in this duet would fall far short on a singer of less technical perfection. How many other tenors have done it, before or after Corelli?
Perhaps a poor choice of words on my part. Obviously, his technique was fantastic. I guess what I meant was he was not always the most fastidious of singers - he slurred the staccato notes in Pira almost all the time and his diction was not in Pavarotti's league. But, that said, he was a monumental voice - the most thrilling I've ever heard.
As others pointed out, these two were best friends. But there's another reason as well. Corelli was either staring at the ceiling or had his eyes closed and couldn't possibly see the conductor. Bastianini held his hand not only for dramatic reasons, but squeezed Corelli's to show the conductor's rubato. I'm not sure of this but it makes sense. Look at the way Bastianini watches the conductor, even when it's Corelli's phrase.
Yes, it definitely makes sense now that you explained. I already knew they were best friends, and the characters they are portraying are friends, but only because they don't know yet each other's true identity. Anyway, I have this DVD and I ADORE it! Tebaldi is Leonora and she is WONDERFUL, too!
It's flowers they're throwing. Since this was being recorded, the audience was told not to clap or cheer. I think they wanted to show their appreciation in some way, although the sound of the bouquets hitting the stage amid the overall silence is funny.
Those were radishes coming down, When the stretcher-bearers come on you can see, and hear the thud of them landing.Check out some more recent sources to find out why.a lot has been written about it.
Corelli is the only one I have ever heard that sang "Solenne" as it is due, sounding like a dying man. His vocal colours are incredible and the two decrescenti (which he further elaborated later) sound as if his voice was escaping him along with his life.
Bastianini, such full, beautiful, caressing voice.
I could not help but assume that, judging on the almost fornlornly way Bastianini looks at Corelli, how Corelli holding Basianini for dear life, there were something really touching going on between these two men.
I've read that the 1958 Naples audience was pretty rough, and threw veggies at Corelli and Bastianini to show them that they were not welcome. Bastianini wasn't bothered by it, but supported Corelli, who was very upset. A few years later, when Bastianini was dying of cancer, Corelli was said to have been extremely helpful and supportive of his friend. You can read about some of this at a site called Opera Gems.
Stupenda... la voce di Corelli è meravigliosa.... le mezze voci e i fiati sono stupendi... Bastianini è nettamente il migliore Vargas che io abbia conosciuto
This always knocks my socks off: Corelli flat on his back, spinning out that melodic line with such power and control. Bastinini is no slouch, either.
this is such perfection it brough tears to my eyes. i would gladly give a month of my life to be able to travel back in time and watch this performance live.
There is something about italians singers singing in their own language. But i don't knock down the singers that you mentioned above. They have that special warm. Milanov, Callas, Bjorling, De los Angeles, Warren were great. I did not mean to offend you. I know they are great voices outside Italy.
You're absolutely right. That extra something that comes from the natural effortlessness of the primary language makes such a difference! All the others are great, too, but Italian was made for Italians; they do it well.

For Corelli to float diminuendos like these while supine makes him truly supernatural.
