Many opera stars smoked back then. It was not until the 1960's that it was discovered of the dangers of smoking to one's health. You have to remember also Gobbi is young singing this piece. I wish they would change the picture. Any picture of anyone with a cigarette in their mouth is gross.
oh god I can't bear people repeating "too light! too light!". He's singing mezza voce. This is supposed to be a serenade. If 99% of baritones bawl this piece like an agonizing buffalo doesn't mean Gobbi is "too light".

Johnny Carson did the biggets doubletake I've ever seen when baritone Robert Merrill lit up a cigarette after polishing off an aria on the Tonight Show. "YOU SMOKE???!!!", Carson said. Merrill replied that he had been smoking for years. Probably didn't hurt him much, as he still had most of his voice at the age of 75.

Mi piace molto Gobbi quando fa Mozart, e anche qui è bravo, però preferisco il suo Figaro nelle "Nozze".
