Picking this song because like many other people who have commented, i found this song thanks to the perks. My ex bought me a copy of the book (when we were still together) and i loved it, and the following christmas one of her presents was a cassette with all the songs from charlies tape for patrick. This was our song from then on.

  • Suzanne Vega, I love you...

  • this is a beautiful song<3

  • Furr0, you obviously GOT my pm a while ago and just decided to ignore me... Typical

  • @LyricWatch : You watch for the lyrics LyricWatch. The large characters... as a child your mummy noticed your fixation with words...there was the time you daubed your name in crayon on the kitchen wall. i'm sorry, but you're deluded. words don't mean shit. the whole language thing a biological fucking delusion which is hard-wired into our 'human' selves. Don't kid yourself that you're gonna attain to some liberated state because of a well-turned sentence. Just don't!

  • @ofcoursehesthefarmer

But there's some comfort in knowing that we're not completely alone in this fucked up world. words.

  • @ofcoursehesthefarmer

and thereby you dismiss all the works of the great writers and poets.. Shakespeare, Thomas, Salinger, Dylan etc etc etc et al.. You must be a clever bloke... but you do admit there could be a "well turned sentence" - hmmmm..

Great song by SV btw.. her best - why do they always play Luka on the radio??

  • @ofcoursehesthefarmer ...wtf are you talking about?

  • furrO your writings are fascinating, they are deep and full of strange meaning. You are arranging disorder where people who are not privy to your kinds of experience are simply appreciating the beautiful song gypsy in their own way. They need some space to do that. Don't be hurt no-one here wants to hurt you.

  • maybe you should write a book.

a book not written in the comments section of a song.

  • Those verses:

You're the jester of this courtyard with a smile like a girl's

    Distracted by the women

With the dimples and the curls

By the pretty and the mischievous

By the timid and the blessed

...they remind me of an old friend from university times, Besion..just like seeing him..that funny face like a jack in the box, the jester...such a happy frame of mind, I wonder what he's doing now, if he's still joyful..of course he's no longer the jester, we all grew old

  • Me lembra o Bension, the jester, "the jack in the box", amigo dos velhos tempos, just like seeing him, slender, joyful. Agora estamos todos velhos, gostaria de saber como ele é, como está hoje em dia...

  • its funny i dont need the lyrics i know most of her songs off bye heart

  • suzanne vega a fukin legend

  • you got that right ;)

  • my favorite song :)

  • my goodness..if i had a girlfriend i´d be probably crying right now..

this song does it to me

  • è praticamente stupenda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Imagine what it would be like without Suzanne Vega? What would we be doing now?

  • Have a look for my Gypsy video from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004. There she tells the story why she'd written this song.

  • liverpool England?

  • Yes, England

  • I remember a story that said Gypsy was written as a going away present to a summer love she worked with at a summer camp when she was 18. Don't know if that's a true story or not, but it would make sense.

Anyone else ever hear of this?

This is such a beautiful song. One of my all-time favorites - Suzanne Vega or not!

  • To Answer my own question, I just found a transcript of an interview she did on WNEW in 1996 where she talked about Gypsy. The boy in question was from Liverpool, and was an arts counselor at a summer camp in upstate NY. Suzanne was a folk music and dance counselor at a girls camp next door. I tried to post a link to it, but apparently that won't work here!

  • Was that Liverpool England or USA?

  • England

  • YEs, she said she thought he was an anarchist, she met him years later and asked him about it, he said,'no', 'he was not an anarchist', she said he was her first romance. There are other songs she wrote inspired by the same romance.

  • The song was inspired by this boyfriend she had when she was 18 in Liverpool. He used to teach art to children.

  • After I wrote this post, I thought about it and realized I had heard her tell the story of Gypsy at a concert she did at the Lyric Theatre in Baltimore in 1987.

Richard Thompson opened for her, and I remember thinking as I looked around the sold-out crowd of about 2,500 that more people were there for Richard Thompson than for Suzanne. However, by the end of the night she received a huge standing ovation. It was such a rush to see her embraced by all these new fans.

  • Actually the concert in which I heard her telling this story was held in France.

  • Would that be Montreux?

  • Sorry, I think it was Montreux, yes, she said things in French...

  • Once I read this song is about Suzannes first love. I wonder what the guy is doing today... :D

  • Thanks, love it!..."strange and gauzy threads"

    so many wonderful words.....
