This movie may have a preety nice look, but doesn't compensates for the lack of creativity in the plot and mediocre characters. Just you wait untill someone comes up with a good story to tell and puts its hands on the technology used for this movie, then I'll have something to think about it. As for Avatar, it will be forgotten, I already forgot the name of the protagonist anyway.
Cameron may not have stole this story, but he sure didn't have to work very hard to come up with it. Sorry, but except for the CGI/3D there was nothing new to see with that film, which is why I only saw it once, and will probably never watch it again.

I liked the effects very much, but I have to say the plot wasn't anything unique or special. And since for me movies are all about plots and characters I have to say that avatar is OK only for me. I'd say inception and even shutter island kicks avatar's ass badly (in my opinion).

The reason why Avatar sucks is for these reasons 1. It completely copies the plot for Dances with Wolves. 2. The script was badly written. 3. It's pretty stupid to call the element the government is after Unobtainium. 4. Lastly I don't understand why people think it's the "greatest movie ever." It's NOT. There are so many other better films for example: The Wild Bunch, Blade Runner, Goodfellas, Dirty Harry and so many other great films that the generation of today haven't seen.
@adc896 You've outlined your stance really well and I'm not going to argue, but the films you've listed as better than Avatar are all gritty and dark films and lack the sort of fantasy and awe that Avatar had. No film has shown an entirely different world or planet as well as Avatar, and that's why people like it I think, it sparked their imaginations and drew them into a world they had never seen or dreamt of

Erm...Avatar was a good movie because it had a message against racism and greed? How does that alone make it a good movie? The story was ripped-off and written really weak, the underlying message was slap-in-your-face preachy, and it was pathetically good/evil morality that would put a Disney movie to shame. Story not stolen? Ever seen 'Pocahontas'? And I can't just base my opinion on CGI and if Cameron wanted it to be a 'leave-brain-at-door' film, that doesn't excuse the fact that the story and the characters were not able to generate any symapthy in yours truly. The world and the visuals were amazing but the story and the characters were so flat and boring, black and white and I could not care LESS about them! So there're enough valid arguments that rightfully state 'Avatar' is just a meager film.
Well, everyone has their own opinions on movies, I liked this movie, it had amazing CGI and 3D, which was my favorite part, and the acting was great. The story wasn't stolen, however it was your average Romeo and Juliet story.
And the Na'vi were generic puppy dog creatures hand crafted to be like-able at first glance, and there's a plethora of overly obvious words, like unobtainium. The plot was very simplistic, and manipulative, as were the creatures, and the message. The marines were overly simplistic and destructive for an advanced culture, and the na'vi were a little to perfect and harmonious for a simplistic culture. But overall it was a good movie, it wasn't amazing though, and it wasn't a bad movie by far.
I thought Avatar was okay, Generic? yes. Amazing graphically, very. Awesome movie? not really, just okay. A much better movie would be district 9, because they are able to start with ugly bug creatures, and gradually make you feel sympathy for their plight, there's an obvious political message, but it isn't hitting you over the head with it's simplicity. In this the two opposing forces are generic the marines portrayed as shallow assholes (Which is offensive to actual marines.)
Avatar was stupid, boring, and the cgi was really shitty. Look back on it in three years and see if you're still impressed.
It was also racist- expounding on the superioroty of the white main character and the inferioroty of the blue cat people.
It WAS just a direct rip-off of dances with last samurai type movies (also terrible garbage) .It is NOT based on history- the whole "white saviour for the natives" thing is an invention of hollywood screenwriters and turn of the century novelists.

@RedtreeJoe I didn't say the whole story and characters were based on history, just a mere picture of how badly the natives were treated by the whites because the whites had superior technology and the ones that moved to southern states were mainly focused on making money.

Um, unobtainium ACTUALLY exists. It's scientifically true. But, the use of the name in Avatar just isn't everyone's cup of tea. But, the problem you might have with it is that we honestly don't know what its for. That's where the problem lies.
And an underrated movie as district 9 is 100% better, and also the cg is superior, the argument is also much more touching, than the plot of this big pocahontas remake
The problem of Avatar is the way the producers and director sell the idea to be an unique experiencie, an "original" movie, and yes I hate that, all the publicitary machinery talking about the greatness of this movie was the most anoying thing I've ever seen, The thing is that the movie is the same story told in a different place, but that is not the worst of the movie is the overrated commentaries around it, as a big fan of sci - fi movies, Avatar was the most tedious lapse time!
this was an amazing movie! It was a touching story and one person thought that the characters had no personality. they are idiots and they said that it was sad when the characters died but I broke into tears when people died. especially the epic battle at the end.
Theres nothing wrong with a movie that doesnt require you to think a lot. Avatar wasnt made for that, it was made to entertain you and leave you awestruck, and i believe James Cameron achieved that goal. But in the sequel, i hope he takes the story and makes something more of it, because we've alrwady been dazzled; now we are looking for a great story with more substance.

This is actually the most sensible promotion of Avatar I've seen, but it's still ridiculous.

Avatar has top notch graphics. Thats where the good points end. Picture the movie without graphics, and you have SLOPPY plot, BORING characters that we dont care about and staler dialogue than week old bread. FACT
By the way, if you like this movie, check out "The Emerald Forest"; a wonderful film by John Boorman. If anything, "Avatar" borrows more from that movie than it does from "Dances with Wolves." Also, "Princess Mononoke" is another great film with a wonderful environmental theme.
Now to say that the plot was stolen is quite hilarious. Yes it does have similarities to many movies, but it is unique in the fact that it combines several different qualities into one movie. There's scifi, fantasy, environmentalism, romance, action, all mixed together with a Native American/African flavor. The people that view the movie negatively are trying to make the movie more than it really is. It's a classic story with a new twist and lots of wonderful eye candy.
I mean were just so stupid for having problems with a movie that recieved countless awards, earned the most ever in box office and has such an outrageous budget. all it was was special effects. the storyline was like it took James Cameron one night to create. during that night he likely smoked a lot of weed, watched the smurfs, played Halo 3, and watched Dances with Wolves. he woke up the next morning and said woah man i have the best idea for a movie ever its sooo origonal!

@MasteroChieftan First, let me state that I love Avatar. I have to disagree with you though about unobtanium being an obvious metaphor for oil. Coming from the coal fields of Kentucky, I can clearly see the similarities to coal. Around here we are going through a massive conflict over mountain top removal and its devastation to one of the most diverse ecosystems in America. The heavy equipment in the movie is almost identical to the heavy equipment you see on one of these mining operations.

@DarPower1 see the problem is, no one is ever going to listen to your argument, because in this films case it wasn't to present a grand story, it was to present grand special effects. If you want good story go watch something else. I enjoyed both aspects of the film but was really in it to see what they had done with cgi and special fx. What I saw was probably the most incredible achievement in film history.

Did you see it in 3D? I did, and it kinda bugged me. I was around in the 80s when there was a 3D resurgency (i.e. Jaws 3D, ), and it was lame back then. I think I would've enjoyed the movie more without having to wear the weird glasses...

Alright, this is great, don't let them say otherwise. Your accent is hot. Talk more. But what you are looking for historically is the Trail of Tears. Where Andrew Jackson militarily forced every American Indian tribe he could find into a small reserve, in order to make more space for immigrants. The LAND was the reason for being moved. They refer to the unobtanium as "dirt" or "mud" and sometimes "cheddar." Therefore, one can conclude that Cameron was basing Avatar off of the Trail of Tears.

I liked the effects very much, but I have to say the plot wasn't anything unique or special. And since for me movies are all about plots and characters I have to say that avatar is OK only for me. I'd say inception and even shutter island kicks avatar's ass badly (in my opinion).

The reason why Avatar sucks is for these reasons 1. It completely copies the plot for Dances with Wolves. 2. The script was badly written. 3. It's pretty stupid to call the element the government is after Unobtainium. 4. Lastly I don't understand why people think it's the "greatest movie ever." It's NOT. There are so many other better films for example: The Wild Bunch, Blade Runner, Goodfellas, Dirty Harry and so many other great films that the generation of today haven't seen.

Story not stolen? Ever seen 'Pocahontas'? And I can't just base my opinion on CGI and if Cameron wanted it to be a 'leave-brain-at-door' film, that doesn't excuse the fact that the story and the characters were not able to generate any symapthy in yours truly. The world and the visuals were amazing but the story and the characters were so flat and boring, black and white and I could not care LESS about them! So there're enough valid arguments that rightfully state 'Avatar' is just a meager film.

Well, everyone has their own opinions on movies, I liked this movie, it had amazing CGI and 3D, which was my favorite part, and the acting was great. The story wasn't stolen, however it was your average Romeo and Juliet story.

And the Na'vi were generic puppy dog creatures hand crafted to be like-able at first glance, and there's a plethora of overly obvious words, like unobtainium. The plot was very simplistic, and manipulative, as were the creatures, and the message. The marines were overly simplistic and destructive for an advanced culture, and the na'vi were a little to perfect and harmonious for a simplistic culture. But overall it was a good movie, it wasn't amazing though, and it wasn't a bad movie by far.

I thought Avatar was okay, Generic? yes. Amazing graphically, very. Awesome movie? not really, just okay. A much better movie would be district 9, because they are able to start with ugly bug creatures, and gradually make you feel sympathy for their plight, there's an obvious political message, but it isn't hitting you over the head with it's simplicity. In this the two opposing forces are generic the marines portrayed as shallow assholes (Which is offensive to actual marines.)

It was also racist- expounding on the superioroty of the white main character and the inferioroty of the blue cat people.
It WAS just a direct rip-off of dances with last samurai type movies (also terrible garbage) .It is NOT based on history- the whole "white saviour for the natives" thing is an invention of hollywood screenwriters and turn of the century novelists.

The problem of Avatar is the way the producers and director sell the idea to be an unique experiencie, an "original" movie, and yes I hate that, all the publicitary machinery talking about the greatness of this movie was the most anoying thing I've ever seen, The thing is that the movie is the same story told in a different place, but that is not the worst of the movie is the overrated commentaries around it, as a big fan of sci - fi movies, Avatar was the most tedious lapse time!

Theres nothing wrong with a movie that doesnt require you to think a lot. Avatar wasnt made for that, it was made to entertain you and leave you awestruck, and i believe James Cameron achieved that goal. But in the sequel, i hope he takes the story and makes something more of it, because we've alrwady been dazzled; now we are looking for a great story with more substance.

I hated this movie simply for the fact that I could predict EVERY GODDAMN THING THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN within the first fifteen goddamn minutes! No surprises, no twists, nothing!
And it's not just the villains that were paper thin. Every character was paper thin. It was a three hour cartoon
"Leave your brain at the door". To hell with that. lousy excuse. I'm tired of that. Chris Nolan shows that you can have substance with spectacle.

Leave a brain at the door films are always terrible, that means it has no depth and you don't have to think, therefore it shouldn't be taken seriously and should get a very low rating. And a side note, as far as the eye can see, if the PLOT is generic, then the film should rely on acting, which was so hard to find a shred of skill in the actors, aside from Sigourney Weaver, although when she was out,I piratically took off my 3d glasses.CGI was awesome, but its not what should be lookedforin film

By the way, if you like this movie, check out "The Emerald Forest"; a wonderful film by John Boorman. If anything, "Avatar" borrows more from that movie than it does from "Dances with Wolves." Also, "Princess Mononoke" is another great film with a wonderful environmental theme.

Now to say that the plot was stolen is quite hilarious. Yes it does have similarities to many movies, but it is unique in the fact that it combines several different qualities into one movie. There's scifi, fantasy, environmentalism, romance, action, all mixed together with a Native American/African flavor. The people that view the movie negatively are trying to make the movie more than it really is. It's a classic story with a new twist and lots of wonderful eye candy.

@MasteroChieftan First, let me state that I love Avatar. I have to disagree with you though about unobtanium being an obvious metaphor for oil. Coming from the coal fields of Kentucky, I can clearly see the similarities to coal. Around here we are going through a massive conflict over mountain top removal and its devastation to one of the most diverse ecosystems in America. The heavy equipment in the movie is almost identical to the heavy equipment you see on one of these mining operations.

@DarPower1 see the problem is, no one is ever going to listen to your argument, because in this films case it wasn't to present a grand story, it was to present grand special effects. If you want good story go watch something else. I enjoyed both aspects of the film but was really in it to see what they had done with cgi and special fx. What I saw was probably the most incredible achievement in film history.

@DarPower1 it's not that many people. The way a sfx film sucks is if it pretends to have a great story. Avatar wasn't pretending anything. James Cameron set out to make an sfx film and that's what he did. So therefore he did an amazing job. If he had set out to do a great sfx and story film equally then yes he would have failed. I didn't find it boring at all, it was kind of like watching the discovery channel with space marines thrown in...

avatar is a remake of pocahontas, and unobtanium is unobutaniuable resource. hw original. Avatar's sex scene was animal bestiality. VIllians where bland and sterotypical. this movie sucked ass. the dialog fucking sucked, and the mountains fly. WTF? and aliens and predators are actually better looking than alien cats. Preds are kick ass, aliens are epicness, and na'vi are ass faces.

Alright, this is great, don't let them say otherwise. Your accent is hot. Talk more. But what you are looking for historically is the Trail of Tears. Where Andrew Jackson militarily forced every American Indian tribe he could find into a small reserve, in order to make more space for immigrants. The LAND was the reason for being moved. They refer to the unobtanium as "dirt" or "mud" and sometimes "cheddar." Therefore, one can conclude that Cameron was basing Avatar off of the Trail of Tears.
