Barclay is, in my opinion, the most amazing character in all of Star Trek. No other character had to overcome what he did. And through all of his problems, throughout all of his life, he has brought hope to many and shown that 'that guy' down in engineering is significant after all.
Dwight Schultz again does a stellar job as Lt. Reginald Barclay. He was also phenomenal as Murdock on "The A-Team." Dwight Schultz is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated actors of all time and one of the best.
I read somewhere when Kate Mulgrew said the line about keeping the docking bay open for them, she was very emotional when filming that scene so she was really trying to hold back the tears and stay in character the whole time.
I wish I had seen this episode when it premiered for the first time, it would have been a very emotional episode to see especially these last 10 minutes.
@montgomery1971 Privacy rights in the future? You've got to be kidding me! You don't have ANY rights in the future unless of course you are special to the government but if you are not then let's not even start as it ain't pretty.
This is an attempt to make communists look positive when in reality communisum is a form of big business on a political scale no matter how nice it LOOKS on paper or whatever they use int he future.
I always loved Barclay, I really did. Dwight did fantastic in the role, and even though he wasn't in Trek much I always remembered him and smiled a heck of a lot when he turned up again. And it was nice to see him start to grow and allow himself to go forth more. Kinda gives me hope for my future.
I swear though, when I first saw Dwight in A-Team I was shocked as anything and he's so different there! Just shows that he's a good actor.
It's funny: not everything from TNG and Voyager has held up all that well over the years, but Barclay is actually improved by knowing his entire character arc. I found him irritating at first, but now I think he's one of the best characters ever created for Star Trek.
Why would Reg. Barclay's medical file be on Voyager? It wouldn't have been sent with the updates and there's no reason that every ship would have the medical history of every Starfleet officer. It'd be a waste of computer space.
Each ship contains a record of every Starfleet officer at the time of it's launch, every book ever written that still survived to the 24th century (the TNG crew was able to pull up a cheap, third-rate novel from early 21st century), all musical recordings that still survived, and more.
The data storage capacity of Star Trek computers is massive.
If you had told someone 40 years ago your hard drive was 1TB, they would have laughed at you. The very first hard drive was 5MB.
@Draknfyre Frankly, for every book, musical piece, and even every video and movie ever made, it would be astonishing amount of data, but not impossible, and it wouldn't even take up much physical space.
Barclay was as good as ever in these episodes, but I wish that he had been used more in the TNG movies. He would have made an interesting outsider protagonist, and he'd definitely have been nicer than the berserk Movie Picard.
-- There were aspects of Voyager that I disliked and sometimes it let me down, but these episodes were WONDERFUL and really made me love it. Barclay is such a special character and he really grounded me in this series more than I thought I would be. Given his holo-addiction and shyness, it makes perfect sense that somebody with his experiences would understand how lonely and hopeless Voyager's situation must be for those so far from home. Very special writing...
I am disappointed in the Doctor. He should not be sharing confidential medical information with the others. That is a horrible breach of confidentiality.......and unprofessional!
I wold hate to think such things as addictions and other psychological disorders would be in the public domain and available for anyone to see. So much for privacy....
All you would have to do is call up the mission logs for the Enterprise. Picard also made an order for any of Barcley's programs to be exaimined. The order would also be in the ships log. Besides... what is Janeway going to do? Confine the Doctor to quarters?
Would you like for your employer to make such information available for every member of the company to see about you? The Doctor should respect privacy, and the "employer," which is the Federation, should, too. Who cares? It is all fiction anyway!
In his own way, Dwight Shultz is every bit as good an actor as Patrick Stewart. It's too bad they couldn't fit him in more often in Start Trek TNG or in the Voyager series.
ive just finished watching that episode a minute ago, and thought about favouriting the triumph. Thanks and thanks to Reginald Barclay for his saving of Voyager.
"Keep a docking bay open for us...". Wow! I tear up every time!!

This is why I like voyager best of all the trek series. It gives you that fuzzy warm feeling that other series don't give you :)

Barclay kicked some major ass in this episode but it makes me wonder what would have happened to him if Voyager did NOT respond...

Don't they have privacy in the 24th century. The doctor should not have been discussing barclay's medical history in front of the crew.
