  • Campbell, Benmont, Tom - the whole band rules!

  • The man is a true artist

  • She's woman in love...but not with me. I think that would of been better. Great song though.

  • Love Benmont :)

  • I saw Tom petty and the HB's in 1981 at the Merriwheather Post Pavilion in maryland, Then saw springsteen 8 days later in Philly, and Tom Petty's live sound was better!

  • Tom Petty an Icon of the good music that has touched our lives...

  • 9/4/82 is my exact birthday. This is one of my favorite songs by anyone. If that's not a sign, what is?

  • god he looks so young

  • This is brilliant. Tom petty you are the man.

  • damn I just turned one years old Sept 3 1982. I have a crush on the young Tom Petty, I love him in this video :)

  • this sounds like crap. i think he was way too stoned or something.

  • @krja4e He was losing his voice.

  • I do so adore women.

  • there shouldnt be a dislike button for this

  • Ah yes ....the US Festivel. Drove down from SF in the middle of the night .....20 years old with an absolute smokin' 38 married hottie from Honduras at my side. Arrived in San Bernadino and spent the next three days in 115 degree bliss. Will never forget that magical weekend.

  • HOW COME HE DOESNT PLAY THIS GREAT SONG LIVE ANYMORE? I DONT HE'S PLAYED IT LIVE IN MANY YEARS...

  • excellent performance as usual.....

  • God soo big Ass hi has.........

  • a wonderful song

  • love the piano intro

  • the Heartbreakers had a percussionist?!? he looks really bored... but this is a great song w/ that beautiful piano intro from Benmont!

  • This is an honest song from the heart of an honest man! I imagine his heart has been broken and he has used that experience to become stronger and has thrived as a result. Also he bears her no ill will. Please notice that implicit in these lyrics. He still loves her.

  • @ehswan Absolutely right. I remember being in this exact same position in 1986. Back then, my girlfriend of 3 years left me, for a guy who' was "Gonna break her heart to pieces."

Guess what? He did break her heart, in time. But not before she married him and had his kid. He screwed around on her while she was pregnant. I was speechless. Tom's lyrics spoke for me in this song.

She could have done much better.

  • Ha, HIM basically stole this riff for "Wings of a Butterfly". Go look...

  • looks like Mike was having some guitar problems at the start! cool.... TPHB!

  • God Ive always loved this song. I can still remember the first time I heard it, it just blew my shit away!

  • That was hot!

  • so much good rock n' roll. She can't let go.

  • Tom Petty is the man!

  • love it

  • this is before they got the black drummer.

  • god i love that piano beginning

  • "Now I don't understand the world today, I don't understand just what she needed'

"Anything can happen, anything can end" Tom Petty's snarling

  • this was a very rough time for Petty when he wrote this...you would be snarling too.

  • I have always loved this song.Tom Petty writes lyrics that rock my soul. Rock On Tom Petty

  • This makes me cry. One of the best songs ever about romantic failure and impossible wishes.

I didn't know that Tom Petty was mistreated as a child.

Damn The Torpedoes is one of my ten desert island discs. This song is the best one from Hard Pronises.

Fantastic live performance. Thanx for uploading it.

  • One of the greatest songs ever written

  • Petty also overcame a difficult relationship with his father, who found it hard to accept that his son was "a mild-mannered kid who was interested in the arts" and subjected him to verbal and physical abuse on a regular basis.

  • you totally just copy and pasted that or copied it from their documentary I should know

  • THANKS for great video:)

    5 stars and subscription

  • I remember I was a freshman in HS, 1982-1983, and the guy that sat in front of me, used to wear the T shirt from this concert (US Fest 82') Getting close to 30yrs ago. Time goes by too quick once you become an adult!

  • COWBOYSFAN782008: Hi. you are SO RIGHT. I remember as a youngster I wanted to become adult fast.. now that I'm old.. a year seems like a month.. he he

    Tom Petty rocks!!

    BE HAPPY:)

  • This is one of my favorite TP songs of all time. Very cool to be able to see it live. Love the piano. Thanks for sharing!!

  • wow, never seen this before. love youtube.

  • I luv my old TP & Heartbreakers. Always thought this sounded like it could be a 60's Supremes / Motown song for some reason

  • its funny you say that, a lot of early Petty really was R&B influenced, Breakdown, Don't Do Me Like That, for example... there's a lot more examples than just that, this would fit too, i love that about his music

  • I was at that show the best performance ever

  • wheres the video for this song. its not on youtube. someone tell me where

  • Greatest video I've seen for a Long time on youtube! Love this song! Thanks:)

  • Great video, thank you for posting.

  • This performance is generally a better arrangement & vocal performance than the album version IMHO, but I do miss the screaming guitar. I looked for it too but it's gone. Wish I'd watched it more before it went away. Thanks for putting this up.

  • thanks for posting this! i absolutely love Benmont's piano on this version.

  • Any chance you can post it?

  • I don't have it...I might be able to try and upload it later if I can find it though. :-)

  • Hmm strange I cant find it on here.

  • Well, I'll be damned. I just searched it...it's been taken down.

  • To bad no one has posted the Album version of this yet.

  • The album version of the song? Dude, that's all over YouTube...

  • I love Stan`s playing.:)

  • Has to be TP best song of his career, for whatever reason it has been overlooked. "Woman in Love" is never on any of the Heartbreakers best of CD's. "Hard Promises" was their best work.

    Thanks

    Darkhorsegirl for the great post.

  • it absolutley is!

  • It's on the 2-disc anthology released by MCA in 2000, if that helps? Disc 1, track 13 I think...

  • AHHHHH!

  • Did Petty have lice during this period?...lot of head scratching!

  • love it .... 5 booming quasars for this great and rare post .. petem4

(ooh pete this is awesome! tnx so much for the share! one of ur best yet!)

  • with arm extended a humble bow in your direction from me to thee .. a pleasure to share greatness ... cbud

  • Aw Some !

  • I have been looking for a live clip of this song forever. Thanks so much for posting. Do u know when the last time they played this live was? They were never the same live after Stan Lynch left. If anyone knows of another live clip of this song please post!

  • Or Tom was not a dick.

  • I have met Petty on two different occasions and he is pretty fucking laid back. Stan really believed he was important and hated the idea of Tom being the star of the show.

  • I like Stan, and I agree that the Heartbreakers are just as important as Tom. I mean, hey, without Benmont there wouldn't BE a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers...without Stan or Mike or Ron, there wouldn't be one, either.

  • TP and the Heartbreakers is centered around it's founding members..TP, Mike and Benmont. Stan wasn't even an original member. Drummers and bassists are a dime a dozen and easily interchangable. I thought Stan was a good powerful drummer but in no way the star of the show. Then you had in his attitude and bullying behavior. He was a very imposing man who liked to fight. Tom even told him from the beginning..you are allowed to call anyone anything you want..just don't touch anyone.

  • Your statement shows that you know little about music and what makes a song work. Drummers and bassist are a dime a dozen? Ask any drummer you know about Stan and see what he says. How about the fect the Stan won a grammy as a producer. Gee u dont think that his talent in the studio kept the HB a great rock band instead of Tom goung into some folk bullshit. You cant compare the work Tom did with him and what he recorded without him.

  • You Have been a studio musician for 27 years and think a drummer like stan is a dime a dozen? Wow 27 years and you still never made it! Your band mates went on to form Little texas right after the booted you and found a better guitar player.lol I guess guitar players are a dime a dozen. You opened for thrash metal bands and think thats something that lends gred to your argument? Dude there is truly no hope for you in music. Do u have those shoes in a size 5 red sir!

  • I wasn't booted sir...they wanted to go country..and I didn't. I have made a very good living in music..better than punching a time clock at Burger King like yourself.

  • You know what, I'm this close to disabling comments on this f*cking video. It's just a damn TPATH song, get over whether Stan was the business or not.

    Cos he was.

But I'm just biased, I guess. Go take this somewhere else.

  • Mhm. Yeah. So much for this being about the music.

  • Stan...was an original member.

  • The band was originally called Mudcrutch and Randy Marsh was the drummer...they disbanded and morphed into the Heartbreakers..which was founded by Petty, Campbell and Tench. Stan was brought in by Ron Blair. While Stan may have been there from the outset I wouldn't call him a founding or original member...anyone with a set of sticks could have joined TP and they still would have been successful.

  • Dude. Here's how it went. RANDALL Marsh was Mudcrutch's drummer. I know. I talked to him on MySpace a couple times. Mudcrutch broke up because the record company just wanted Tom. Benmont set up a band consisting of Mike, Ron, Stan, Marty Jourard (he left...) and a couple other people whose names escape me right now. Benmont also invited Tom to the session, and Tom "stole" the band, and Denny Cordell liked them, and there are the Heartbreakers. Simple story.

  • Jee, I wonder why the official Mudcrutch MySpace announced that was really Randall? I wonder why people met him at the Dirty Knobs show and he said that was really him? I do not get info from Wikipedia, well, I read it but I don't believe anything they say. I read all of the info from the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Playback booklet, and the Running Down a Dream book. Not to mention the info from the documentary that came out recently.

  • For one thing, he sent me a friend request. And maybe some people just want to have them on their friends list cos they appreciate them. I was actually surprised Randall sent me a request, but I guess it just happens. Why does it concern you, anyway??

  • Dark, Dont get into it with this Deer hunter guy. Look at the bands he listed opening for. He made my point perfectly.

  • You know, you're probably right. Thanks. :o)

  • Totally right. just the same story that is on the beautiful Peter Bogdanovic's movie Running Down A Dream. i love especially the first dvd with the band's histoty, but also the concert from Gainesville, Florida on the second dvd was awesome.

  • This is the only recording of this song. This is my favorite song. Tom mighta been twisted this night.

  • Howie Epstein made his live debut at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on September 1, 1982 on a tour to promote the album Long After Dark. When Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers played the US Festival 3 days later in San Bernardino, California, alongside Fleetwood Mac, The Police and Talking Heads, he took it all in his stride.

  • Howie's so cool. :-)

  • Yeah he is amazing.:)

  • Howie was a good bassist , but i prefer Ron blair . Of coarse , with this being my favorite Petty song , I don't have much ground to stand on as neither of them played on the lp version .

  • The Lp version it was Donald`Duck`Dunn who played that great bass line. On the new live album by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers,Ron Blair is playing the bass on A Woman in Love. Amazing version. Ron is really good on that song. I love them Both.:)

  • June 24-1982 Houba Houba French TV

September 1-1982 Civic Auditorium Santa Cruz, CA

September 4-1982 US Festivial San Bernadino, CA

    December 4-1982 Utrecht, Holland Vredenburg

December 12-1982 Brighton, England Conference Center

    December 19-1982 Dortmund, Germany Westfalenhalle

  • I Love it:)

  • OMG!!!!....THANK YOUUUU!!!!...=)
