I saw Tom petty and the HB's in 1981 at the Merriwheather Post Pavilion in maryland, Then saw springsteen 8 days later in Philly, and Tom Petty's live sound was better!
Ah yes ....the US Festivel. Drove down from SF in the middle of the night .....20 years old with an absolute smokin' 38 married hottie from Honduras at my side. Arrived in San Bernadino and spent the next three days in 115 degree bliss. Will never forget that magical weekend.
This is an honest song from the heart of an honest man! I imagine his heart has been broken and he has used that experience to become stronger and has thrived as a result. Also he bears her no ill will. Please notice that implicit in these lyrics. He still loves her.
@ehswan Absolutely right. I remember being in this exact same position in 1986. Back then, my girlfriend of 3 years left me, for a guy who' was "Gonna break her heart to pieces."
Guess what? He did break her heart, in time. But not before she married him and had his kid. He screwed around on her while she was pregnant. I was speechless. Tom's lyrics spoke for me in this song.
Petty also overcame a difficult relationship with his father, who found it hard to accept that his son was "a mild-mannered kid who was interested in the arts" and subjected him to verbal and physical abuse on a regular basis.
I remember I was a freshman in HS, 1982-1983, and the guy that sat in front of me, used to wear the T shirt from this concert (US Fest 82') Getting close to 30yrs ago. Time goes by too quick once you become an adult!
COWBOYSFAN782008: Hi. you are SO RIGHT. I remember as a youngster I wanted to become adult fast.. now that I'm old.. a year seems like a month.. he he
its funny you say that, a lot of early Petty really was R&B influenced, Breakdown, Don't Do Me Like That, for example... there's a lot more examples than just that, this would fit too, i love that about his music
This performance is generally a better arrangement & vocal performance than the album version IMHO, but I do miss the screaming guitar. I looked for it too but it's gone. Wish I'd watched it more before it went away. Thanks for putting this up.
Has to be TP best song of his career, for whatever reason it has been overlooked. "Woman in Love" is never on any of the Heartbreakers best of CD's. "Hard Promises" was their best work.
I have been looking for a live clip of this song forever. Thanks so much for posting. Do u know when the last time they played this live was? They were never the same live after Stan Lynch left. If anyone knows of another live clip of this song please post!
I have met Petty on two different occasions and he is pretty fucking laid back. Stan really believed he was important and hated the idea of Tom being the star of the show.
I like Stan, and I agree that the Heartbreakers are just as important as Tom. I mean, hey, without Benmont there wouldn't BE a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers...without Stan or Mike or Ron, there wouldn't be one, either.
TP and the Heartbreakers is centered around it's founding members..TP, Mike and Benmont. Stan wasn't even an original member. Drummers and bassists are a dime a dozen and easily interchangable. I thought Stan was a good powerful drummer but in no way the star of the show. Then you had in his attitude and bullying behavior. He was a very imposing man who liked to fight. Tom even told him from the beginning..you are allowed to call anyone anything you want..just don't touch anyone.
Your statement shows that you know little about music and what makes a song work. Drummers and bassist are a dime a dozen? Ask any drummer you know about Stan and see what he says. How about the fect the Stan won a grammy as a producer. Gee u dont think that his talent in the studio kept the HB a great rock band instead of Tom goung into some folk bullshit. You cant compare the work Tom did with him and what he recorded without him.

I know a lot more about music than you could possibly ever know. I have been playing guitar in working bands and as a studio musician for 27 years. I was a guitar player in band that two of the members went on to form the country band Little Texas. The last band I played for opened in clubs for Napalm Death, Slayer, Impaler, King Diamond, and Chastain.
You Have been a studio musician for 27 years and think a drummer like stan is a dime a dozen? Wow 27 years and you still never made it! Your band mates went on to form Little texas right after the booted you and found a better guitar player.lol I guess guitar players are a dime a dozen. You opened for thrash metal bands and think thats something that lends gred to your argument? Dude there is truly no hope for you in music. Do u have those shoes in a size 5 red sir!
I wasn't booted sir...they wanted to go country..and I didn't. I have made a very good living in music..better than punching a time clock at Burger King like yourself.
The band was originally called Mudcrutch and Randy Marsh was the drummer...they disbanded and morphed into the Heartbreakers..which was founded by Petty, Campbell and Tench. Stan was brought in by Ron Blair. While Stan may have been there from the outset I wouldn't call him a founding or original member...anyone with a set of sticks could have joined TP and they still would have been successful.
Dude. Here's how it went. RANDALL Marsh was Mudcrutch's drummer. I know. I talked to him on MySpace a couple times. Mudcrutch broke up because the record company just wanted Tom. Benmont set up a band consisting of Mike, Ron, Stan, Marty Jourard (he left...) and a couple other people whose names escape me right now. Benmont also invited Tom to the session, and Tom "stole" the band, and Denny Cordell liked them, and there are the Heartbreakers. Simple story.
Jee, I wonder why the official Mudcrutch MySpace announced that was really Randall? I wonder why people met him at the Dirty Knobs show and he said that was really him? I do not get info from Wikipedia, well, I read it but I don't believe anything they say. I read all of the info from the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Playback booklet, and the Running Down a Dream book. Not to mention the info from the documentary that came out recently.

I find it fascinating that anyone would have people on their "friends" list that wasn't really a friend. WHat kind of sychophant loser adds musicians to their list.
For one thing, he sent me a friend request. And maybe some people just want to have them on their friends list cos they appreciate them. I was actually surprised Randall sent me a request, but I guess it just happens. Why does it concern you, anyway??
Totally right. just the same story that is on the beautiful Peter Bogdanovic's movie Running Down A Dream. i love especially the first dvd with the band's histoty, but also the concert from Gainesville, Florida on the second dvd was awesome.
