  • i dont live very far from salem illinois. i live in the tiny town of bridgeport and i felt my house shudder at about 4 in the morning. i about fell out of my bed. My stepmom thought a tornadoe hit and had everyone go to the basement . WRONG IDEA!!!!

  • illinois barely has earthquakes i never felt an earthquake before

  • I can't wait till the big one. I've got quake insurance, do you?

  • that a sign that 2012 is gonna happen????

  • @nntrebing kinda like california people make a big deal out of the fires you have EVERY YEAR and freak out about it. Earthquakes are not common in the midwest, so yes people would freak out. I live on the gulf coast, we have hurricanes, if a small hurricane or tropical storm hit california you guys would freak out. Also, the new madrid fault spawns bigger quakes than california, just less frequently

  • @CodArk2 are you that fucking stupid? 2 years ago over 500 homes were destroyed in Sylmar alone because of the fires in the Angeles Forest, how are people NOT going to make a big deal about it? Retard.

2ndly the New Madrid Fault DOES NOT spawn bigger quakes than California's San Andreas fault, the problem is since quakes are so infrequent in that part of the world, buildings aren't built to withstand earthquakes. Instead of watching National Geographic episodes, get an actual education, moron.

  • @drakeneyez Doesnt matter, you people freak out over fires you KNOW will happen year end and year out. Where I live we have hurricanes that are more destructive than little fires(500 homes is pathetic in comparison) and are up there with major earthquakes in death and destruction and we build for them here.

  • @CodArk2 have you ever been to California to be assuming so much, or are you one of those idiots who just masses all their limited knowledge based on what they see on tv? You act like you're more deprived because you live in an area that gets hit by hurricanes, really? oooh how sad, move somewhere else. In case you forgot here in Cali we also get hit by major earthquakes at least once every decade. You guys can at least see hurricanes coming and have time to prepare, quakes are unpredictable.

  • @drakeneyez I have family from there, tho I have not been to california, as i doubt you have been where I live or the midwest. Also, We get hurricanes about once a decade, at least the big ones. But even tropical storms can be very destructive. Considering the city i live in has 6 million people, any hurricane hitting here is a big deal to begin with. If a hurricane hit cali you guys wouldnt even begin to know what to do. Just like you are prepared for earthquakes we are prepared for hurricanes

  • @CodArk2 I have been to the Midwest many times, my job forces me to travel worldwide. I'm just curious as to know what your beef is with Californians? Do you hate us or something? You seem like you have an axe to grind. And yes, out here we're not prepared for hurricanes mainly because they are very rare out here. But what's your point anyway? Are you better because you're more prepared for a myriad of natural disasters?

  • @drakeneyez I don't hate californians, but i see it a lot where californians have know it all syndrome which is really annoying. Saying 'Well cali quakes are worse" doesn't help, since this is not in cali at all and has nothing to do with california. why do californians see the need to go in every quake video and go off about how cali quakes are worse. Oddly enough i don't see this from many other places. Some californians are too self important about their state and act like no other matters

  • @CodArk2 aha! I knew it, you just dislike Californians, but you know what, when yo get older and start traveling around more you'll see that people in general in all parts of the world are like that. For example I grew up in NYC, with that stigma of being rude and obnoxious like all New Yorkers, but guess what when I moved out to LA, it all changed, now I see as people from LA as overly rude and obnoxious, but I guess you can blame the traffic problems on the attitudes.

  • @drakeneyez I have been all over the eastern US, just not te west coast. I can say that it usually is the coastal people (Northeast and cali) that have the know it all, i'm smarter than you mentality that i run into. Some might have it, but its not as prevalent as in those places. I have been to NY and the northeast, so as far as that part of the nation is concerned i have a good idea. notice I said i see a lot of californians do that, not all or most do though

  • @CodArk2 I agree with you, but did you ever think there might be something wrong with you? I'm not trying to insult you or anything, but from reading your comments it seems you have some sort of superiority complex going on.

  • @drakeneyez Not really. I don't think I am better than people from california or the northeast, i just get annoyed at the attitude i get from them. Thinking people from the coasts are arrogant snobs is as justifiable as thinking all from the midwest are backward farmer yokels and everyone from the south is racist hillbillies etc. I dont think i am better than them, I just don't like their attitudes, there is a difference.

  • @CodArk2 another example, about 3 years ago I traveled around the Midwest; St Louis, Chicago, Minnesota, and even went to Memphis, I was with a group of my girls and one of them is Mexican, never in my life had I witnessed so much racism towards a hispanic from people from your neck of the woods. And they were so utterly nasty and rude making nasty remarks, pointing, etc. So just from that experience can I deduce that all people from the midwest are racist craskers? Think outside the box dude.

  • @drakeneyez I am actually from arkansas. Racism is something of a stereotype people have about the south and midwest, when it is usually worse in northern states. Where I live the population is about 30 percent hispanic, and most i know have no issues with them as long as they speak english. Keep in mind you traveled through it, i have lived there. Not saying it didn't happen but its not like hispanics are unknown or hated in the midwest or south.

  • @drakeneyez Second, study more. The New Madrid fault spawned the biggest recorded earthquakes in the lower 48 at magnitude 8.1 ,by comparison, San Andrea's biggest was 7.9, and most are weaker. The New Madrid fault puts out much larger quakes, it just does it much less frequently. Of course being in the center of a continent there shouldn't be any quakes at all. Being from that part of the country, I learned it in history classes. California doesn't have biggest quakes in the US, deal with it.

  • @CodArk2 Honey I have a minor in Geology, what I learned about geology and earth science was from actual university level classes, not some brainless high school history class.

Yes you are right, the New Madrid fault caused the biggest quake in the contiguous US since RECORDS were kept. However, newer technologies and seismic histories show that the San Andreas is capable and has produced quakes of a magnitude as high as that quake that hit Chile last year.

Is there a point to your rambling?

  • @drakeneyez But thats the thing, New Madrid has actually produced, on record, larger quakes. Prehistoric quakes didn't affect people and it is unknown if the fault could produce quakes that large again (same with newmadrid). I have gone to university as well, but magnitude 8 is nothing tiny like the guy i was responding to was saying. mag 8 is big even for cali. even a mag 5 is signifigant. also, because new madrid is in a river basin, it affects a MUCH MUCH bigger area than any cali quake would

  • @CodArk2 records for that area go only as far back as 150 years, maybe 200 years, at most. When I'm talking about ancient quakes, I'm not even talking about the Jurassic epoch, I'm talking about 500 years ago, where there were already large populations of natives in thriving communities. The LA basin also lies on an alluvial fan, this is why 17 years ago this week, on Jan 17, 1994, the 6.4 Northridge quake destroyed parts of the city far away from the epicenter. Again, what's your point?

  • @drakeneyez There are records of large earthquakes on new madrid going back 1500 years at least, some were magnitude 9 and higher. With the mag 8 ones in the 1800's they were felt 1500 miles away in washington DC. this particular quake was felt as far away as tennessee (about 500 miles away). Earthquakes in cali tend to roll like waves, quakes on new madrid tend to jolt violently and last longer. They are felt over a wider area as well than a cali quake.

  • @CodArk2 Yes I know all that, but I'm sorry you're wrong again, you're assuming again...Not all earthquakes in Cali roll; strike slip fault action. Some, like the Northridge Quake were produced from a thrust fault which made the movement of the ground in an up and down position, thus it was a very destructive quake, although the magnitude wasn't that great. Again, the same type, not the magnitude, of quake that hit Chile last year. Trust me, I experienced that quake myself, it was horrible.

  • @drakeneyez Not all the faults are the same, nor are all the quakes, but most in cali are rolling ones. The ones in the midwest are usually jarring ones. I have not been through destructive quakes, the biggest i have been through was 5.1 . If the midwest suffers a quake it would cause more damage over a wide area than a quake in CA. Its building codes + geology that would make it so. magnitude 7 and higher would be big even in cali, let alone the midwest where they aren't expected

  • @CodArk2 Yes I agree with you. Let's just agree that we all have to be prepared for whatever. And as horrible as it may seem, 2012 is around the corner and you know all those end-of-the-earth believers will start mass suicides, murders, and all kinds of crazy shit during the next 2 years leading up to 12.21.2012

  • @drakeneyez yeah, 2012 will be like 2000 all over again, people believing its the end of the world until the next arbitrary date will come. mass suicides and such are likely to be common, even though nothing will happen. We had a galactic alignment in 198 and nothing happened, same thing as in 2012, but they fixate on the maya

  • he said, i said, he said, i said.

  • it was harrp

  • Certainly woke me up. One video said it was in Central Illinois, Now they say its at the south tip? Make up your mind!

I live on the Wisconsin border!

  • this video is from 2008, not 2010

  • How the fuck did u guys sleep through a 4.0?

that was not a natural earthquake. a 4.0 can crush buildings.

  • A 4.0 can not crush buildings. this video here was 5.* one and it didnt do nearly any damage

  • not CRUSH but it can damage buildings and ur saying 5.0 now? that could definitely do some moderate damage to buildings. if it was a real one that is lol

  • we just had a 4.0 here at NIU on wednesday....the epicenter was 8 miles away from my place........there was no reported damage int eh whole area......once again the one that happened in 2008 (this video) barely did any damage

  • u just said this was a 5.0 this is the video i am commenting on i know what year the video was uploaded : /

i was commenting on the fact the people actually slept through a 4.0 now ur telling me it was a 5.0 and now I am really wondering why

  • i was mentioning this 5.* earthqauke in this video to support my argument that a 4.0 will not crush/ damage buildings....i advise you to read through the conversation again

  • i know what u were saying

and i made a mistake by saying CRUSH but a 4.0 can do slight damage to buildings. And a 5.0 can do some moderate damage. I was just surprised people slept through it.

  • i believe most slept through it since it only lasted for like five seconds. if it lasted longer i believe most would wake up, but since it was so early in the morning and so short most didn't even second guess what was going on since no one is wide awake in 5 seconds.

  • ahhh didnt catch where it was 5 secs. makes sense

  • slept through this one but woke up on the one that happend 2/10/2010 in northern illinois

  • thamn i felt that shit shake bro no lie

  • Comment removed

  • I lived in california for 20 years and I know what an earthquick feels like this did not feel like a wave it felt more like a pulse or a puch call me crazy but this was no earthquake i was wide awake .dont think this was natural

  • i slept through this one, but i was up in Northern Illinois. But i did wake up this past one that just occured at 4am....crazy shit

  • @hulbert87 same here, that was freaky for me, since this is the first time ive felt one O-o;

  • I slept right through this quake.

  • Yeah...I felt this quake on the South Side...

  • you are an idiot

  • hellyah he is lmao

  • If this was CA the Anchor man would yell under the desk

  • Definitely felt it here in Indianapolis. The safety plan taped on my dorm room door includes instructions for an earthquake, but I sure didn't expect to ever experience one in Indiana! People in my family's hometown, Beloit, Wisconsin, felt it as well.
