I lived with patents like this, my friend died following her lobotomy, they covered the eyes because of the extensive bruising, but they destroyed the lives of thousands.

@morrigan909 Our mental health system is definitely broken, but this film didn't seem to be too bad. I saw nothing to indicate mistreatment of these people. Not to say that it hasn't happened to others. If you want to know thrown away like broken toys, visit the hospital ward of a retirement home. I worked in a retirement home and just being there for a few hours a day was depressing. They were treated with no respect. Many of them were confused and scared and the CNA's offered no comfort.

As soon as someone exhibits certain different way of thinking that doesn't match with the mainstream unrealistic way of thinking; someone is labeled as "mentally unstable". It's a matter of perception, or even at times, social pressures that drive someone to their limits.
I couldnt agree more guys these are human beings and they deserve help they arent all animals or dangerous that seems to be the steryotype and to be honest and im quite ashamed to admit it i would be quite scared if i was alone in the company of these people but thats because of how insane people are showcased through movies and so on but my heart does go out to these people

@ArmadaRanger That's very possible they were masked to cover the effects of a lobotomy, however it's also possible they were masked to hide their identity. I know dark glassed were often used to hide the bruising from lobotomies. Walter Freeman a "doctor" performed many of them. Some at the former Weston State Hospital, I visited there last summer. Vids of the place on YouTube. Some of the lobotomy ice picks and an ect machine are still there.
Pretty sure the masks are on the ppl who just had lobotomies. thats what they made them wear to hide the black eyes... a lobotomy was a "no biggie". messed up.
I'm not positive, but I think that the masked people were recent lobotomy patients, and if that is the case, then the masks were used to cover the black eyes caused by the procedure.

ECT still happens within reason because it's for people with severe depression where therapy & drugs have failed.
ECT has been proven to be effective, it is a lot more humane now. It is a natural thing to have schizophrenia or depression from a biological approach, but it can still be prevented from a cognitive approach. I suggest you read things properly next time you misunderstand and become angry.

0:14...it's easy to miss, literally a fraction of a second, the masked patient is sort of peeking over his mask...you can see his left eye...I dunno why it creeps me out, but it sure does.
Wow, the frameskips, music and grainy looks really add to this. Sad cases really, i never thought at until I started visiting a care home which dealt with mental patients, and saw people talking to fresh air and one woman that was talking to the wide open glass door, wanting to be let out as she was trapped. Back then, if you were considered incurable or too hard to handle, they would stick an ice pick right above your eye, under your brow bone is. They'd take the pick and swirl it around so they'd fuck up your frontal lobes. So, you'd be left unable to think with no personality so to say. Making you more "manageable"

This gives the patients very bad black eyes after the procedure, so I think hence the masks.

They suffer emotionally and cannot express themselves in a way that is considered acceptable by the public. If you sit down with them and talk with them as you would a friend, you would find some quite likeable. the most dumb thing is that they performed this quick surgery on children for bad grades or bad behaviour at school, depressed housewives and for alot of simple psychological issues that today would be solved with a talk. they were lobotomizing people for everything ..
how sad... I hope to have all child abuse and social stigma stopped. they are not crazy people. With proper medication and treatment, they are able to go back to community and be productive.
@noraa93 the patients with bandages had recently had lobotomys (basically a drill through their brain, they used to think this would make them better:s), and the bandages were to cover up the bruising they got around their eyes.
This is all taken from an video made in the early 1900's called "symptoms of schizophrenia" and another one I don't recognize. Back when mental hospitals were still around they would take and do experiments and even give frontal lobotomies to patients in order to make them act out their most severe symptoms. Just sayin'.

When I was in the hospital, I saw people with paranoid schitzoprenia. They would get upset if I try to talk to them. I saw people with bipolar disorder. If I talk to them, they would talk on and on and could not stop talking. I am a paranoid shizophrenic. I thought that people were plotting against me. It is so scary that all the love and care will not make it better. Please no more profanity. It just upsets people.
I am sorry to tell you that pleanty of TLC will not make those people better. They are severely distearbed. They need medication. They did not have medication at the time so they Lobotomised them. When you reach that point, they become hostal and do not accept TLC. I lived in a hospital for six years. Even with the medication, the patients never seem to rejoin society. Eccept, me of cource.

I think that this video shows victoms of veterans from various wars that are profoundly shell-shocked or exposed to chemical agents. In the great war, they released verious chemical agents such as mustard gas. The trama alone can cause someone to convulse all the time. It is not natural like a DD. Also, they did not have antipsychotic medications then. So they opened up their head and took out brain, as simple as that! Now do you understand?

electo shock therapy is a horrible as is lobotomy. I don't know what kind of person thinks this would be humane. but I appreciate the posting people should know the history and harm our psychiatric hospitals put people through. in 2001 Paul Henri Thomas went to court against pilgrim state to try and prevent them from administering electro shock twice a week. up to 40 session. who ever is for this treatment has - no heart!!!

@Chloe5503 Another thing, even with lobotomys still happening around the world. It is rare that it is used anymore. Most modern psychiatric hospitals and wards, do not use ECT or lobotomys. Keyword ( Most ).For the user above to flip out saying everybody ban lobotomys and all psychiatrist it before it happens to you is a bit ridiculous.It is highly unlikely that they will start giving everyone a lobotomy! We now know that is really not necessrary and we want to keep moving forward not in reverse

From what I've just read about ECT's in Florida. It looks as though it is up to the patient, doctors WILL try many different pharmacueticals before resorting to giving someone an ECT, that would be a last resort. I don't agree with it, but it is NOT as commonly used as you think. They are NOT preforming as many lobotomys and ECT's today, like they did in their haydays from the 30"s through the 60's when everyone was being FORCED that, everyone is NOT being FORCED / ECT's lobotomys today.
@Chloe5503 Well I can say is I know quite a few who work in the psuchiatry industry. An I had never heard of anyone ever getting shock treatment. Plus reading a book called Survivinc Schizoprhenia. A Family Manual, by Dr. Fuller E Torry had a listing in that book of different state laws regarding that. I didn't see it there and I've never heard of taht being done to anyone here. I have been a psyche ward in this state more then once, and I know of no who has recieved shock therapy or ECT

What is really sad is that alot of the patients were simply OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), like the guy touching his tie several times before he speaks, etc. With modern medicine, it can be controlled now, but back then, they just "simply tucked them away" and did horrible things to make them "easier to manage". I want to know WHO defined "normal" back then? Shamefull!

Wow, the frameskips, music and grainy looks really add to this. Sad cases really, i never thought at until I started visiting a care home which dealt with mental patients, and saw people talking to fresh air and one woman that was talking to the wide open glass door, wanting to be let out as she was trapped. To imagine they used to have to wear the masks etc, kind of creepy.

Back then, if you were considered incurable or too hard to handle, they would stick an ice pick right above your eye, under your brow bone is. They'd take the pick and swirl it around so they'd fuck up your frontal lobes. So, you'd be left unable to think with no personality so to say. Making you more "manageable"

@skinny9283 To my understanding it's because they use a tool that goes under your eyelid, past the side of your eyeball and into the brain, where they detach a part of the brain from the rest of it....
This gives the patients very bad black eyes after the procedure, so I think hence the masks.

They suffer emotionally and cannot express themselves in a way that is considered acceptable by the public. If you sit down with them and talk with them as you would a friend, you would find some quite likeable. This is all taken from an video made in the early 1900's called "symptoms of schizophrenia" and another one I don't recognize. Back when mental hospitals were still around they would take and do experiments and even give frontal lobotomies to patients in order to make them act out their most severe symptoms. Just sayin'.

When I was in the hospital, I saw people with paranoid schitzoprenia. They would get upset if I try to talk to them. I saw people with bipolar disorder. If I talk to them, they would talk on and on and could not stop talking. I am a paranoid shizophrenic. I thought that people were plotting against me. It is so scary that all the love and care will not make it better. Please no more profanity. It just upsets people.

I am sorry to tell you that pleanty of TLC will not make those people better. They are severely distearbed. They need medication. They did not have medication at the time so they Lobotomised them. When you reach that point, they become hostal and do not accept TLC. I lived in a hospital for six years. Even with the medication, the patients never seem to rejoin society. Eccept, me of cource.

I think that this video shows victoms of veterans from various wars that are profoundly shell-shocked or exposed to chemical agents. In the great war, they released verious chemical agents such as mustard gas. The trama alone can cause someone to convulse all the time. It is not natural like a DD. Also, they did not have antipsychotic medications then. So they opened up their head and took out brain, as simple as that! Now do you understand?

electo shock therapy is a horrible as is lobotomy. I don't know what kind of person thinks this would be humane. but I appreciate the posting people should know the history and harm our psychiatric hospitals put people through. in 2001 Paul Henri Thomas went to court against pilgrim state to try and prevent them from administering electro shock twice a week. up to 40 session. who ever is for this treatment has - no heart!!!

@Chloe5503 Another thing, even with lobotomys still happening around the world. It is rare that it is used anymore. Most modern psychiatric hospitals and wards, do not use ECT or lobotomys. Keyword ( Most ).For the user above to flip out saying everybody ban lobotomys and all psychiatrist it before it happens to you is a bit ridiculous.It is highly unlikely that they will start giving everyone a lobotomy! We now know that is really not necessrary and we want to keep moving forward not in reverse

From what I've just read about ECT's in Florida. It looks as though it is up to the patient, doctors WILL try many different pharmacueticals before resorting to giving someone an ECT, that would be a last resort. I don't agree with it, but it is NOT as commonly used as you think. They are NOT preforming as many lobotomys and ECT's today, like they did in their haydays from the 30"s through the 60's when everyone was being FORCED that, everyone is NOT being FORCED / ECT's lobotomys today.

@Chloe5503 Well I can say is I know quite a few who work in the psuchiatry industry. An I had never heard of anyone ever getting shock treatment. Plus reading a book called Survivinc Schizoprhenia. A Family Manual, by Dr. Fuller E Torry had a listing in that book of different state laws regarding that. I didn't see it there and I've never heard of taht being done to anyone here. I have been a psyche ward in this state more then once, and I know of no who has recieved shock therapy or ECT

What is really sad is that alot of the patients were simply OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), like the guy touching his tie several times before he speaks, etc. With modern medicine, it can be controlled now, but back then, they just "simply tucked them away" and did horrible things to make them "easier to manage". I want to know WHO defined "normal" back then? Shamefull!

None of this says anything about God. What does this video portray? It portrays the lack of humanity that stems from ignorance and fear. Someone has a condition we can't understand so we lock them up and shut them away. I believe that patients such as these suffer more from us "normal" people locking them up and treating them as outcasts then from their actual illness. This is no different than the ancient Greeks who killed deformed babies. We're still rejecting them.
