@majornewb How lucky! I live in India, and this is one place she'll never come, I bet! And even if she did, I suppose the concert will be too highly priced for me! :(
Hi Hilary Pooky darling the interview proves a point that you can successfully interview a fish LOL. I actually enjoyed it that you were creative & innovative to show that you can do a skit with a fish with a bit of humour attached. People love to hear & see you!!!!!
lol she burnt like 1000 calories after this performance! :)
Incredible how she manages to be that playful with virtuosity. It doesn't sound technically at all, she's all focused on the musical aspect. Wonderful Hilary! :)
Hilar is amazing. period. I don't care who is better, or who is worse, all I know is that right now, I'm inspired by her. I go to a 'school' for music, and no one, or at most one person, can play to the magnitude she can. She makes it look easy. If you think it looks hard, well then you'vegot something coming.
@ robertslistening Place your hand on the table with your fingers on their tips. Now move the tip of one finger the smallest amount you can. That is already enough to change the intonation. When talking with students and saying 'sharper' or 'flatter', for the better students the difference can often be described as the width of a hair.
Well, I hate to say it but violin sounds a whole harder than piano for accuracy. I play some piano also. Your accuracy requirements just blew the doors off of the guitar players. We've got a whole fret to play in. I won't bother learning violin now. LOL
Actually, I like Yuja better. For male pianists Evgeny Kissin is the most awesome.
I'm sure Lang Lang is good, but I do find his composure actions a bit distracting.
Lang Lang does seem to teach kids well also...George Li, Anna Larsen, etc.
She is so deadly accurate in her intonation. It's a pleasure to listen to. I'm not a violinist but every time I listen to this I'm very impressed with how beautiful she makes that instrument sound. I listened to it with some added reverb effect. It still sounded great. It always amazes me how the string players can hit the pitch with such accuracy and no frets or anything to contain the pitch accuracy. I wonder how much leeway they have in finger placement before loss of intonation? 1/4 inch?
@robertslistening Hi! I'm a violinist. A quarter of an inch is the difference of an entirely different note, unfortunately for us! Few can play with the tonal accuracy as Hilary Hahn. 1mm is the difference of being "in tune" and "out of tune". Depending on the key, for string players, the "centre" of notes differs. For example in G major the B is flatter than in C major. I do enjoy Hahn's playing, but I think Lang Lang is in a different league of performance! What an unbelievable man!

I feel like youtube spoils us with amazing players, so much so that when I hear this I feel like its not up to standard even though ill probably never meet a violinist as amazing as she is but its just slightly less exciting than some of the other versions.
This is her remix of Milstein's remix of Paganini's rockstar bits. Of course it's personalized to her view, style, & preferences! So was Kremer's. So was Milstein's by definition in starting it. That's the point of doing things like this in the 1st place. If we wanted exact copies we'd just program a computer. You have to perceive what is there, not what was somewhere, sometime else. This piece is inherently from the "live-improv-jazz wing" of classical.
Not caring about her age, beauty, rests, shoe size, difficulty of the piece, or her hair spray. Those are her problems. Am caring about her interpretation, which is gorgeously elegant & structurally consistent. Her choice to go Paganini-meets-Bach with rich, fluid portrayal is wondrously appropriate (esp at this stage of her career), and she clearly loves the piece as she plays it. That really does matter. She makes it a romantic (tearful?) embodiment. Bravo! Well played on several levels!
Is there a way that one can buy a DVD of this concert? This women is sooo amazing. I adore her playing. Her technique is mind blowing, and she plays it in a way that she seems to caress the notes. Beautifull.
Bully to all those ppl who says she doesn't play it strongly or passionately enough.
@IFeelASongCominOn agreed! personally i think perlman is a phenominal violinist! but i don't really like vengerov's playing, i find that he slaughters alot of pieces, such as the sibelius violin concerto, especially the last movement. but every violinist has his/her kryptonite! but that's just my opinion. :P
Casella's work does litle to disguise the fact that Paganini was such a showoff! But I think Ms. Hahn would have kept up with -or even exceeded- that master's skills. As usual, her attention to tonality and voicing departs from the usual "norms", and should be judged from the standpoint of creative interpretation (as long as the technique is also there, which it is). Two thumbs up! (And a third, if I had one :-)
bow your little bow but if you sign things for fans you should care about them or dont do it.. it was obvious that you were just there cause you had to. don't be so inconsiderate to your fans
Well, it has nothing to do with how it should sound. Every performer has the freedom to express herself/himself through the piece played, that's what playing is supposed to be. Actually, if the performer plays the piece in a totally different manner in contrary to how it was originally written, and makes it even better, that is a true test, that's what separates a true artist and a musician from a really great player.
It's a snapshot toward the eternal beauty of one great Italian composer....and his latest young and beautiful accomplice. Cudos Ms Hahn, wherever you may be.
since I came across this video about 3 weeks ago I watch it everyday, somedays many many times, just such a beautiful music, and this kind of things make me not quit my violin lessons and practice more in the hopes of someday play so beautifully *_*
@boomer4666 hahahahahahahahaha because to be able to play it you study it SO MANY TIMES, cleaning and colouring every single note, of course doing this note by note, that after doing this even the most dim-witted person in the planet memorizes it backwards xD.
26 Dislikes??? Milstein's descendants must be voting! If you can't recognize that Hilary's playing resides in the pinnacle of musicianship, then for God's sake (and ours) take your negative comments elsewhere and go watch a pop music video.
Like my sister always said..."Jealousy gets you nowhere." :)
I prefer hilary hahn's playing to most violinists I've listened to, including haifitz and milstien, she just has a feminine graceful essence to her sound that they just "virtuoso" their way through. She makes the violin sound more voice like and ... well... graceful. Its like , I can really picture her heart tearing as she pulls her entire being into making the notes come into existence. aaah, sigh.
@Kaeles I have stated this sentiment under other of her YouTube videos. I'm glad to see that others feel the same. I live in Bloomington, IN. All I hear is "Joshua Bell is a god". I am certainly no expert in this arena, but my visceral experience listening to Ms. Hahn (against any of her male counterparts) compels me to prefer her interpretations most often. "She makes the violin sound more voice like" is spot on. Interpretations by other violinists seem a little clumsy. Thanks!
@PTheodore33 I like Hilary Hahn very much, but don't count Bell out of the game. He's young and filled with emotion at times. Listen to his rendition of the Goldmark VC. Bell has found his own voice like qualities in many of his renditions as well as Hahn. They're both masterful violinist.
@StoriesofMusic Thanks for the feedback. I will look for it (Goldmark VC) and give it a listen. I'm not anti-Bell. I've actually met him (and worked in the same building as his father many years ago). They are both very lovely people. Between Joshua and Sylvia McNair, we have much to appreciate here. I should have chosen a better way to express it.
@vraellar He changed one letter. Its an easy mistake to make. Just because he isn't as avid a Heifetz admirer as you are doesn't mean you have to complain about his spelling.
@Kaeles then you do not know gidon kremer. to me hilary hahn's is too clean, neat, cold, without emotion, or may be fear... Listen to this piece played by Kremer. And the way you spell Heifetz makes me think you may not have looked into it that closely. technically hahn is mad. but she is not moved herself...
Normally the violin needs to be accompanied by other instruments. Not because the violin doesn't sounds quite beautiful. The reason is that the violin - is an instrument with a small range of sound.
But the Hilary's playing makes the violin sound much more deeper and wider. And though still no one more instrument plays on the stage, I forget about it...
@Aurelius27x She'll be 40 in 9 years. And then Master Jedi, will she be good enough for you? You must be joking. Methinks you are a bit jealous. Just a tad.
@Aurelius27x She'll be 40 in 9 years. And then Master Jedi, will she be good enough for you? You must be joking. Methinks you are a bit jealous. Just a tad. And she's not a kid. She's a 31 year old woman, taught by a master linked by the last century, OLD WORLD MASTER TRAINED. Robots didn't exist then, and she isn't robotic. She's as lyrical as can be.
On a more serious note I don't think her version is any better or worse than Milstein's. They have different approaches to the instrument, Milstein is particularly masculine in his approach. Also the problem with prodigies and kids that start playing out of the womb have very little conception of what they're actually doing with the instrument and amount of experience needed as a human being to really engage with it. These kids are bred to be a robotic kind of perfection. Which isnt natural.
I really like Nathan Milsteins better because he makes the piece he written more exciting. He plays the heck out of the violin when he plays this piece, and sure Hilary Hahn plays it perfect or what ever, it just doesn't sound the Paganiniana is suppose sound. Milstein, killed this piece. Especially on the 6:10 onward. I also like the way he interpreted it.
She plays and practices a lot of Bach and it shows here an in all her playing (the cleanliness and control). I have no criticism of her playing whatsoever!
@AbsoluteZ3R0 For the first minute and half, she plays it better than he does in my opinion, even if he did write it. From about the four minute mark, I prefer his interpretation-- but overall, it sounds disjointed, and I daresay he's flat.
OK so it's not as hard as the 24th (particularly the double stopping) but to achieve that rich smooth clean tone throughout whilst preserving the musicality of such a challenging piece I find frankly astounding!
Most professional violinists, including some of the most accomplished vituosi can only dream of being able to play this so well.
Earlier criticisms about using a shoulder rest are laughable and simply betray a complete incomprehension of the rarified talent being listening to.
For me The best Pianist in the whole world, obviously Valentina Lisitsa , and the best Violinist in the whole world is Hilary Hahn , Both of them at a same concert and doing a duet are just PERFECT!
I know. You're all huge fans, in love. You'd probably kill someone to have tea with her.
I am so conflicted with Hilary Hahn. I like her technique, but I find her mildly irritating as a performer.
I have to change something within myself to fully enjoy her performances without being irritated by her, and frankly I don't exert that effort with other artists.
As always, the cameras are in the wrong place !! they are so arrogant . We know what's good for you.... hahahahahahaha. they should all be fired !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does someone who practises as much as she must really have time to be that beautiful? Does she shatter the constricting chains of time, or is she simply something of another, beautiful world?
From the full body images it looks like she´s a robot. So precise :)

Hilary is gorgeous!

@Kaeles Hilary better than Haifetz, Perlman and Menuhin? you've got no idea of what are you talking about, man xD

Some day when she's 40+ years old she'll realize that PERFECTION... isn't enough.

She's as lyrical as can be.
latham3556 1 year ago 2
On a more serious note I don't think her version is any better or worse than Milstein's. They have different approaches to the instrument, Milstein is particularly masculine in his approach. Also the problem with prodigies and kids that start playing out of the womb have very little conception of what they're actually doing with the instrument and amount of experience needed as a human being to really engage with it. These kids are bred to be a robotic kind of perfection. Which isnt natural.

I bet she couldn't play for shit on the guitar.

OF COURSE. BECAUSE SHE PLAYS VIOLIN.

I also like the way he interpreted it.
ericgable 1 year ago
I dare say she plays it at least 3 times better than Milstein and don't be an idiot because I know that Milstein (in his humble way) would agree...

@cageynerd Milstein plays this way better.

The variation at 4:54 is so hauntingly beautiful... but like, did someone in the audience fall over and die at 6:24? Hahaha it sounds like it.

She plays and practices a lot of Bach and it shows here an in all her playing (the cleanliness and control). I have no criticism of her playing whatsoever!

Lol, this has more views than the composer himself playing it. Pretty sad
AbsoluteZ3R0 1 year ago
@AbsoluteZ3R0 Why is that sad? She's extremely hot and talented and unpretentious and makes us all glad to be alive.
hymnofashes 1 year ago
@hymnofashes Lol first of all, she is NOT hot. Secondly, it's sad because she doesn't play it as well as Milstein.
AbsoluteZ3R0 1 year ago
@AbsoluteZ3R0 For the first minute and half, she plays it better than he does in my opinion, even if he did write it. From about the four minute mark, I prefer his interpretation-- but overall, it sounds disjointed, and I daresay he's flat.

5:00 the beginning of the most beautiful part of this piece.

whoa was that a dissonant right there around 4:25 ?
I didn't know dissonants can sound good even on a violin :o

OK so it's not as hard as the 24th (particularly the double stopping) but to achieve that rich smooth clean tone throughout whilst preserving the musicality of such a challenging piece I find frankly astounding!
Most professional violinists, including some of the most accomplished vituosi can only dream of being able to play this so well.
Earlier criticisms about using a shoulder rest are laughable and simply betray a complete incomprehension of the rarified talent being listening to.

@sweetchuggagun no, its the "paganini" by nathan milstein, he used some bits of the campanella, but the beginnig p.e. is from the 24th caprice.
