Oh, no doubt if JT had recorded this in the early 1970s when his pitch was perfect, he could have come up with an awesome version, but nothing will touch what Glen Campbell does with this song, which is the object of much analysis, how it is a touching love song without any use of the actual word "love" anywhere in the lyrics. Almost certain Jimmy Webb sold his soul to the devil to write this song.
This is an epic song, and as long as it is performed beautifully, it doesn't matter who does, or did it, best....I'm about to listen to Glenn Campbell sing it. Peace, everyone. Love each other....
@MrPerfecttommy Totally, totally agree! it's the same song, same depth, same soul, just a different instrument. You couldn't have 'voiced' it better! :)
What's amazing is that in a LIVE performance (very hard on an artist) Mr. Taylor has lost none of his vocal prowess. Normally vocalists of his age are shot. Not Sweet Baby James.
In 2011, this song's author: Jimmy Webb, said he was "still on 'cloud 9' that James would record his song"; Jimmy said "its the highest honor and thanks, for a songwriter to record another songwriter's work"...Jimmy Webb has a very endearing voice and unique range, similar to JT who sings it true to form tributing Webb... 1968 Glen made Webb write the song quickly in one afternoon after J W's housemates spray painted his whole piano GREEN...sticky green fingers penned this legendary gold tune!
@crazydavedisco : Disagree all you wish. Great music does not come from the writer. Ask any of them, if you get the chance. Many of them admit their music comes to them from someplace outside of themselves. They are merely conduits, even if the music is inherently evil.
"Billy Joel said, and it was at the Songwriter's Hall of Fame ceremony, that it was a song about an ordinary man thinking extraordinary thoughts. That brought tears to my eyes because he came closer than anyone to getting it." quote from Jimmy Webb
I am a lineman for the county And I drive the main road Searching in the sun For another overload I hear you singing in the wires I can hear you through the whine And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line I know I need a small vacation But it don't look like rain And if it snows That stretch down south Won't ever stand the strain And I need you more than want you And I want you for all time And the Wichita lineman Is still on the line
I've been hanging with James since I was a kid and I have to say that he sounded better about 20yrs ago, but I still listen...this song however, will always belong to Glenn Campbell because I heard him perform it so many times...Jimmy Webb is a fantastic writer!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate James Taylor..his band....his music and his dedication to what I call "Perfection." I only dream of making a living performing this style of music as opposed to the rock and roll piano crap I make my living at.......
Mt favorite GlenCampbell song, but James Taylor sounds soft and thoughtfully wistful too, both are long lasting artists.

Beautiful job James. You're no Glen Campbell, but you do the song great justice and have made it your own.

@jeffreydebra1 Sorry but Jimmy Webb owns this song. This is such a hipper version.

@MrPartidoalto: Nobody owns a song. A song like this is a gift from God.

@GoldZahava Sorry I have to disagree. The person who "owns" this song is Jimmy Webb, the talented writer who wrote it!

No one sings it like Glen Campbell.

@hinbieger Cassandra Wilson does.

@hinbieger True Glen made the song-but this man comes the closest. And IF James Taylor had done it 1st folks would speak of it with the same respect.
In truth both of those men's voices fit this song because of the love, the longing and the truth of the words they sing.
