Isnt it easier to just add a duplicate layer, add mask, then surface the blur the duplicated layer, then click on the mask and paint away blur from areas you want sharp, like eyes, lips and hair? Or is that just rubbish?

Hey I have a black & white photograph someone wants to have printed on some shirts. They want me to print black ink on khaki shirts. I need to show them what it will look like first. Is there any way to separate just the black part of the photo, put it on a layer, on top the khaki layer below so client can see how the shirt will look w/ just black ind printed on the shirt? I tried w/ magic wand but the separation is just bad- still has too much opaque white in there- I only need the black parts

I know so many techniques on how to soften skin and this is one of them, the only problem I have is when the person has REALLY bad skin, such as big open pores that cover their whole face and lots of little creases in the skin. So hard to remove with a small healing brush as by the end of it her face still doesn't come out looking natural enough. What do you do with really harsh looking skin?

Another way to do this:

1. Copy layer

2. Filter/Blur/Gaussian blur: move slider till image is almost unrecognizable, make note of the number, hit CANCEL.

3. Filter/other/high pass: use the same number you noted under Gaussian blur, hit OK.

4. Filter/blur/Gaussian blur: use 1/3 of the amount used for the high pass filter.

5. Image/adjustment: Invert

6. Set image transparency to: Overlay

7. layer mask and paint in effect.

@HelloChello33 Yes, it's more of a way to even out the skin tone, while keeping the detail and realism. I find that in many cases, smoothing is not necessary after dong this.

I posted a video "Lohan" where I used this method, but it's wasn't enough as the photo was so poorly shot, so I had to use a traditional skin smoothing method in addition.

I copied the layer, gaussian blur just enough to even out the skin, add noise to simulate skin texture, layer masked it in, reduce opacity.

@playerfelix Layer mask. Select the edited layer, then select Layer/mask layer/hide all (avoid vector mask).

Once this is done the edted layer will be hidden, and a little black thumb nail will apear next to the layer thumb nail.

With that little black box selected, you can grab a white brush and paint in the edited layer. Hiding the background layer will show you the area you have painted in.

switch to a black brush to remove, or paint out.

You can sample a texture from the face (skin texture) and it blends the colours for you. WIth the clone tool, you have to find a bit of matching colour. Both tools have their uses though. It depends what needs doing at the time

@ozymandias2010: If you pay attention, he is not using surface blur. He's using smart blur. He could have played with the threshold, but it would have just reduced the width of the blur, and with such a small width, it's essentially the same as reducing the amount.

@DrexelGal: Look at the tool bar. You can see the icon he has selected there. I had no problem hearing him say the spot healing brush, and he says it more than once. Maybe turn your speakers up..? He is speaking very clearly.
