  • cool car but the back looks ugly!

  • current battery tec gives 40 mile range wtf . rav4 ev built in the 80s did over a 100miles per charge the nissan leaf can do 100 miles per charge .bring the range up to 100 miles instead of 40 and i might consider it otherwise get back to the drawing board as ya missed the boat again gm

  • @gazbmw0

Are you retarded? Once you finish those 100 miles, your screwed. With the volt just put some gas in and your good to go.

  • @ACEDcomputers when your tank of gas is low you fill it back up same as an electric car the battery runs low you charge it back up .

gm say current battery technology gives 40 mile range, bullshit.whoopee you can put gas in it and your good to go ,do you think your gas is going to stay at a low price i dont think so . As for your question i will decline responding to such ignorance

  • wait isnt it an electric camaro? Lol

  • 1:37 watch it from there.

  • I would like to see this car come out and see auto reviews, for sure I will buy it. I am mad enough with oil spill we can not depend on oil for too long.

  • i think that car awsome

  • Much nicer than the compition

  • shut up GM you are idiots.

  • Comment removed

  • why don't they make a car that runs on marsh mellow pie.

    love manbearpig

  • you must realise that if people buy the volt you will pay out your ass for insurance because this is such an technologically advanced car that if breaks down nobody will know how to repair them

  • Toyota already makes cars that go out of control, and they arn't sure how to fix them, over 8 million recalled world wide, and now they are finding oil flow problems in others, looks like toyota played its fan base for suckers

  • hydrogen cars are the way to go not ev

  • hydrogen cars are the way to go not ev

  • Japan I'm sorry you may half to move your Jap plants back to Japan.

  • That is why GM went under. They know shit about their customers and they don't care. Hey, they never asked me for an opinion. 40 miles, will not fly. Design is ok, but the production version will suck as usual, I guarantee it. And quality? What quality? GM always sucked - why would they be better now? Same idiots working there!

  • no you won't have an outrageous electric bill, just use solar energy to power it.. LOL

  • Sure you don't have to pay for gas, but expect an outrageous electric bill.

  • you know what just shut up. would you rather pay $2.50 for gas every day on you stupid fords or have a little high eletric bill!?

  • It will cost less that $1.00 to charge the battery. The initial charge of the battery will last for 40 miles and then the motor will generate electricity to keep the battery charged. Estimated 230 mpg/city.

  • Also it will go into production in November of 2010. It will meet or exceed safety standards and will have a top speed of 100 mph. It's the battery technology improvement that has made this possible. At least that is what they are reporting today. But the cost for the first years may put it out of reach for anyone but the wealthy.

  • doesn't exist nor proven !

  • Why is it every video I see of the Volt it has a maximum speed of like 2mph. SHOW ME THE DAMN THING IN ACTION GM !!

  • this prooves to the world that we dont need aramco and the saudis to run our cars with there shitty stinky oil

  • The chevrolet volt is the American brand(mark) of major quality unlike the Japanese garbages as(like) her(it), Mazda, Nissan, and the brands(marks) garbages as the small stones that are of material recyclable ...........

  • going up hills plus airconditioning on will not make 40miles

so after running electric demo mode your back to buring gasoline

at 40 to 45K$ ? whos gonna afford it ?

    so whats new ?

  • your right, the owners of these will be screwed when they come across those abundant 40 mile hills.

  • This car sucks ass only a fool will buy 40 miles...Gm sucks also because they can make better but they get kick backs from oil pricks and another prick for the last 8 years and the little guy gets fucked...

  • the Volt is a $45K "dream" vehicle

keep dreaming its good to dream....

  • there has been some false facts in this video that do not exist. There is cars that have been made long time ago by Tesla that get 250miles per charge and i've seen 450miles per charge vehicles. Just want to make sure people are not deceived here.

  • Sure 250 miles per charge going downhill in perfect weather conditions. Where's your data? Also the Tesla is about $80,000 for a 2-Seater. The Volt is a 4 seater. No one knows for sure how much the Volt will cost. Most estimates are in the mid-thirties. But remember large flat panel display TV's were hidiously expensive 10 years ago. Now most people can afford them. The same will be true with Volt or any of the other EREV's. Chysler has a very nice vehicle coming out in 2010, the 200C EREV.

  • Tesla is rated at 250 miles on normal driving conditions, the same kind of conditions that chevy volt is rated at 40 miles. Yes, tesla is a 2 door and volt is a 4 does not mean tesla uses less energy. U have to remember tesla is a very very high performance car, it's a sports car, and it's very very fast. It does 0 - 60 mph in 4.1 s I believe. Do sports cars use more or less energy than regular 4 door sedans? All i'm trying to say is that GM could have done better than this with the battery.

  • You don't get this at all do you?

The reason for the low battery mileage is to keep battery cost down. (Batterys being about the most expensive part.) 40 miles was believed to cover shorter daily trips on battery and the generator allow you that simple fillerupp that you are all used to for those long trips. The fact that it uses less gas running gas->generator->electric is a big bonus too. Finely tuned generator and electrics beats gas engines hands-down as they can be tuned for a single load.

  • I heard from a high position GM official, I forgot his name that "GM promissed and will try very hard to keep the cost under 40k" which doesn't tell me that the price will be in low 30's once released. Of course it will go down over time. But 4 price like that we should be getting something like 150 m on a charge if technology wasn't being suppresed to benefit certain elite. I'm still very excited about the realease of volt believe me it's still a huge step foward. I would love to get this car.

  • the volt concept car looked fantastic the actual car look like shit!!!

it looks like prius, insight and other condom lookin cars

  • Yes the concept did look cool but it did really lousy in the wind tunnel tests. The Volt that will go into production next year is a good looking car. Yes within car classes many cars are starting to look alike. This is because the manufactures are trying to squeeze out every mpg they can and aero dynamics are very important.

  • the manufacturers could solve the problem you are saying by diminishing the weight of the cars.

anyway cars like volt, prius, insight etc....are an offense to the beauty.

they are so ugly which is impossible to look at them.

I really hope there will be soon a camaro a challenger or a mustang hybrid to appeal the eye as well.

Ameican cars MUST look American and not be wimpy Asian imitation.

  • Well said

  • @margix condoms look like lunchboxes to you? Sounds like a horrid medical condition. IMO the front end on both concept and production are fantastically ugly. A more 'swept' appearance would have been nice, but GM wants all their cars to look 'manly' rather than sexy. /sigh

  • I love all the GM cars in detroit show.. they were great... GM will top the market soon

  • LMFAO

  • Codeshark you will be laughing. Rahut1248 is correct. GM has some very impressive cars in the works. The Cadillac CTS is the bes Sedan in the world under $40,000. The Corvette is the best sports car in the world for the money. The Buick Enclave is the best crossover vehicle. And the Chevy Volt WILL revolutionize the auto industry.

  • The Volt is merely a hybrid 12 years behind Toyota and Honda.

  • Here we go again, Remedial Education 101:

The Volt is a Plug In Hybrid aka EREV-or EXTENDED RANGE ELECTRIC VEHICLE. It's a very different concept from a Prius which is a Parallel Hybrid. The Volt's gasoline (or diesel or maybe one day fuel cell) engine generates electricity to power an electric motor. This is a radically different concept. Do some research and learn the difference between these two vehicles. The first 40 miles of the Volt are electric only from the battery-no ICE.

  • I know the Prius inside and out... my 2006 has 247,000km's on it and it's never let me down.

Hybrid (in todays car talk) refers to power from a gas engine as a primary source, then electric power reclaimed from that source.

That is what the Volt does...G.M. just can't admit that because Bobby Lutz called the Prius a "publicity stunt" way back in 1997 Prius sales to date... 2 million. They started turning a profit after just their 50,000th unit. Lutz is brain dead... G.M. is finished.

  • GM is full of shit!

"the current battery technology only allows us about 40 or 50 mile range"

The RAV4EV with freaking 10 year old NiMH technology powers an SUV over a 100 mile range, and THAT battery is cheaper, long lasting and proven, not a pie in the sky we-ll-rent-you-tha-battery-racket crap. GM's a fraud, they killed the electric car and made sure Toyota/panasonic couldnt develop its own NiMH, and to top it off they will be rewarded with tax money for being fossil-pushing fraudsters

  • Wow. you need some real help

  • "Wow. you need some real help "

Inform yourself before making trivial comments devoid of facts, this way you can either realize that indeed there have been RAV4EV that are 100% electric with more than 40 mile range per charge driving in California thereby making GM's claim inacurate, or counter with an informed comment that offers valid arguments, thanks

  • The Volt is DIFFERENT. The technology in the Rav4 has been around for that long.

The Volt is all new technology. It's completely electric... completely battery operated and it's engine works as an electric generator. I wish everyone here would get that straight. The Volt is NOT like ANY car that has ever come out... it's ALL NEW technology.

  • Rickdick your stupidity is amazing. The Chevy Volt Battery will be guaranteed to last 150,000 miles or 10 years. The 40 mile range is chosen because 78% of Americans drive less than that per day. Plus when you have extremely hot or cold days, the backup Engine can come on to heat or cool the car. Try that with a RAV4EV ad see if you get the 100 miles. Ths is the beauty of the EREV concept. All the manufacturers are moving to EREV. All electrics just aren't going to make it.

  • You're missing the point, Rav4 already exist, for over a decade, NiMH battery is proven and more affordable. They could have come out with a NiMH Volt years ago yet we are still talking about "will" year after year. Have an EREV w NiMH then switch to Li when its cheaper/ready

You can heat/AC an EV because you will make your commute and back before the battery is out (78% of A drive less than 40 mil range, even if the AC drains half the 100 mile R which is prob exagerated youre still good)

  • Nissans 100mile range all electric sedan goes into production in the U.S. next year! Once again G.M. has lost before it's even started.

  • The Volt also goes into production next year. The all electrics are DOA. Once the extended range concept is introduced, no one will really want a All Electric. There's no market for this vehicle in hot or cold climates. Range anxiety is always a problem with all electrics. With a Volt or any other EREV you can go several hundred miles without fear. I think the spec is 400 miles. You have power for an air conditioner or heater. Try that with an all electric.

  • The problems you are describing with all electrics are going to kill the battery in the Volt too!!! You'll be stuck running a 1.4L engine constantly to keep a charge in the battery to power the wheels... why not just run on a 1.4 directly?? You'll avoid the step down loss of power?

  • this car looks mean too bad its never gonna happen

  • why do all these new cars look so darn boxy!?

  • They don't. You need an eye exam.

  • i luv my CHEVY AVEO its made in KOREA by koreans

  • FUCK TOYOTA!

    WHITE POWER!

  • My present is black...

  • People, please ignore the video responses. That guy is clearly butthurt over a business decision and is willing to let GM go under and see hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people out of work over his petty quest for revenge.

  • By all means lets thank Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi for destroying our own American auto industry. yeah they created jobs for half the pay that our workers get, try telling one of them they need to take a 50% pay cut so the big 3 dont die. How bout kicking these SOB's out of our country and quit selling out our people and our industries to those who hate our guts!

  • PLUG IN "HYBRID"

did you notice GM does not want to call it "HYBRID" ???

    they call it "eletric vehicle"

    WHY WHY WHY

  • The concept car looks so much better than the actual model they ended up with. They also cut production from 60,000 to 10,000 units. They have a waiting list that exceeds 20,000 people. Why would a failing company not make enough cars to meet demand. maybe that is why they are failing.

  • I love GM cars, Cadi and Chevy is on a roll.

  • You mean Garbage Motors? Oh yeah.

  • GM has no one to blame but itself not the japanese, not the workers or its pensions, etc...

it put its bet on big suvs and hummers now they pay the price the govt. did not intervene when they were making windfall profits selling those vehicles...now why should the govt.[taxpayers] intervene now and save their sorry Ass

let them fail and let the small nimble companies shine its their time now !

  • Well, to be fair, GM creates enough jobs which pays taxes.

  • also to be fair, big companies arrange to not pay their taxes.

  • lets thank toyota, honda, nissan, mitsubishi for creating jobs right here in the USA while the big3 is busy exporting auto jobs to canada, brazil, korea, and MEXICO!

  • well if those asian automakers never came to north america then we would of never had that problem

  • No G.M. job has ever been exported to Canada! Our plants are closing faster then yours! Don't blame us!!!

  • As a huge player in the US economy, GM has enough clout to feel safe in asking the taxpayers for a bailout. To me that says they may have had the clout to ask for R&D subsidies for electric cars too. It's such a shortsighted plan to build 100 thousand Hummers when there is a market for MILLIONS of efficient vehicles. To me, the Hummer is a metaphor for America today, Overweight, inefficient, out-of-touch and irresponsible. I wish it weren't true.

  • Third, if GM fails, thousands and thousands of people will become unemployed, not only GM employees, but also it's suppliers, dealers...Do you want that to happen? Why Japanese automakers are doing so well? I guess part of the reason is that no Japanese people would say they are happy to see Toyota go bankcrupt

  • I do not wish to see anymore people suffer during this crisis. And i understand that there is a huge row of dominos waiting to crash once GM folds. My point is that peak oil is something that even the layman saw coming 20 yrs ago. EVERYONE knew oil would eventually get expensive. They should have been investing for the future of transportation when the going was good. GM has a GDP bigger than most countries, of course they have a responsibility to the environment, we all do.

  • In a perfect world yes, because you assume once such high tech/clean energy/fuel efficient vehicles are available, the market will be ready to adopt. But I think it is more complicated than that. Infrastructure, cusomers, the whole industry should be ready for such a thing to happy and sustain. It takes more than just a ingeneous techonology. GM might have been a little late and it might have made some mistakes, but I will give it credit for coming up with such a great product.

  • Where was this technology 10-15 years ago?! It was shelved. GM took the easy and lucrative way out and shelved the R&D until now(probably under pressure from Big Oil). They have been focused on high margin SUV's and Trucks to power the company until the bottom fell out of the market. With such fiscal short-sightedness and disregard for their environmental impact, they deserve to fail.

  • Well, first of all, it remains arguable if corporate has the moral obligations to go the most environmental way.Second, techonology of this kind is a huge investment. Are you saying you expect GM to pull off some craftmanship and develop Volt out of nothing? All the money for the R&D for such a technology is made possible by higher margin vehicles.

  • Very cool car. Go GM

  • in early 1900s before the gasoline cars existed. Battery powered cars were on the roads and the main problem was its range and battery.

today its they same issue 'range' and 'battery' so the volt put a 1.4 liter small car gasoline engine to generate electricity

making it an expensive $40K "hybrid" thats still doesnt exist and a big maybe at early 2011

an epensive hybrid thats 14 years behind its current competitor.

  • The VOLT -- is a HOAX. If GM were serious, it would first admit that the EV1 and other Electric cars were a success, and admit that it could, like all other EVs, start off with existing lead or NiMH batteries, and later upgrade to Lithium if and when it becomes available.

So why is GM refusing to come clean??

  • Because they are trying to sell a car, NOT RUN FOR OFFICE!

You make speeches like a politician, has anyone ever told you that?

  • Sweeet! Thanks for posting CDV!!

  • omg this car is so slower than turtle or snail lol

  • What happens when the batteries die?

  • The engine recharges them!

  • Use a bio powered electric generator or solar to charge it then you are off the grid. And who's to say the user can't stick more batteries in the car.

    Neat car anyway

  • I heard they were changing the styling a little more, is this thing bigger than the miata?

  • thank you nuno1959 finally somebody gets it. plus the technology has existed for ten years. the EV1 got more range without using any gas! this is a pathetic excuse to "go green", and I am afraid many people are going to waste their money, especially in these times.

  • The EV1 had pathetic range. In cold weather you were lucky to get 12-15 miles on a full charge! So you could use it in very limited markets. G.M. was right to wait for better battery and hybrid options.

  • Looks great, but give the car wide tire. Who cares if the car is not so electric mileage efficient.

  • the gas part of it keeps the oil dictators happy.

  • right but you forgot Mr. Goodwrench happy as you still need spark plugs, oil filter, air filter, coolant, tune ups, and oil changes and regular engine maintenance just like owning a traditional car

saturday mornings at the car dealership repair dept.

ha ha! whats new? this is just another hybrid thats 12 years behind !

  • I cant wait for this car to be released. It should silence all the hate America liberals who drive toyotas because they're upset GM took away their piece of garbage EV-1s that no one wanted except for a few aging hippy nerds. I'm all for fossil fuels and I like this idea of melding two distinctly different technologies to achieve a nobel goal. That is to flex some American engineering muscle and reduce fuel consumption. I still love my V8 though.

  • FYI everyone - this is not the actual model that will be mass produce for the general public due to not meeting aerodynamic specification, so do your home work before making ignorant comments. This car will revolutionize the automotive industry, 40MPG and not using a single drop of gasoline. Exceeding 40MPG will cause the car to start a 1 liter turbo charge engine to fire utilizing gasoline to power the generator. Imagine what impact this car will do to the environment, better yet to OPEC

  • middle to front Camaro, middle to back Crossfire lol

  • Just another fugly GM product...

  • The volt looks like the love child of the Mazda 3 and the Camaro Concept. I love it.

  • Unfortunately the redesign (to be released to employees in September, and to the world probably in January) will look more like a Chevy Cruze than the concept vehicle. I have a feeling a lot of people will be disappointed.

  • This concept is catching on... already many vehicles are being designed around this technology... many cars and suvs.

Unless gas goes back down to $2 per gallon.. many plug in electrics will be on the road in a couple years... the Chevy Volt Eflex system is still the best to date.

  • the biggest hurdle for GM is it's track record ! remember the EV 1 ? the little plug-in that could go like 60 mph for +or - 100miles that suddenly GM pulled out & crushed every single one of them ? so....what are they after this time? federal grants to develop hydrogen based cars , that oil companies wil then sell through their''gas'' stations ? whatever ....

  • Right,I do not want another car that uses a fuel that the oil barons can manufacture, monopolize, and enslave us with. If we develop electric vehicles, the electricity you put into the car could eventually be produced on your own roof. After the roof panels are paid for your fuel costs drop to zero. "Any fuel based car is utter folly if we move to solar and electric."

  • hi GS ! & don't forget the most important : even if your solar panels aren't paid for you're TOTALLY independent from Iran, Utd Arab Emirates, S. Arabia + Texaco, Chevron, B.P plus all the corruption they generate since politicians rely on big business to fund the next election, thus selling out the interests of the people in exchange for a fistful of dollars, otherwise we'd have already alternative fuels...long ago. bunch of bastards & they're starting with : must go to war w/ Iran...pigs

  • What am I suppose to do with this thing?

I need 4 or 5 doors with room for soccer stuff and shopping bags on 4 wheels that can go 40 miles at 65 mph.

  • Then check out the XH-150 by AFS Trinity: an SUV with the same power system as the Volt.

  • XH-150 by AFS Trinity....I'd buy one tomorrow....anybody no how, where, and when, I can buy it.

As long as there is oil in the ground I suspect it just a ploy.

  • Chevy's engineers are so behind the times. There are all electric cars that you can buy today that will give you over 100 miles per charge.

  • The biggest hurdle for GM isn't the technology. GM says the new batteries have had no issues so far and are working better than anticipated.

The two biggest problems are cost and consumer acceptance. That's what buried the EVs from the 90's.

And for those doubters: GM has just recently moved the Volt from "concept" to "production". They also just approved a huge investment for retooling Hamtramck for mass production of the Volt. They see E-REVs as the future of the auto industry.

    So do I.

  • signsoflife give me reasons why it would not sell?

  • HEY GM:

I'll eat a live hamster if you actually SELL this car.

  • What is GM waiting for, a buyout from Exxon ?

I would love to tell Exxon where to put their gas. I hear Pennsylvania has more coal that Saudi Arabia has oil. I would prefer to have my money go to a US coal miner or power station engineer than the oil companies. I've had it with them ripping me off. They've just about destroyed the country's economy

  • Chevron owns the patent to the NIMh batteries. They only allow small ones to be made which are in all the hybrids out there today. That is why GM and others are looking at lithium ion. GM should have never sold the patent.

  • GM is lying about the VOLT, if it wanted to make an EV with a 50 mile range, it need not use expensive Lithium. Hundreds of NiMH RAV4-EV drive over 100 miles on a charge, there's nothing new about the VOLT except GM using it for PR.

  • I will be extremely surprised if GM does this. It will basically render the "GM Goodwrench Service PLUS" useless. (Unless they are counting on the range-extender to be used a lot and require service.) lol

  • Excellent point. I never thought about them putting their GM Goodwrench Service PLUS out of business. Wow, those sneaky guys. We need some leadership from president Bush.

  • hot!
