5:03 was a classic Hingis shot. I never cared for her because of her rotten attitude. I started rooting for her when she came back though. I must admit, no woman plays the game with the ease that Hingis did in the late 90's. She was literally born with a racket in her hand and she was such a natural...and Monica, gee - we all know the history books were rewritten against her. No stabbing = all but unstoppable Monica for several more years. We were robbed of some great Graf/Seles epics :(

Yes, 97 Hingis, when Steffi was out, and the Williams sisters had not reach their peak. Hingis in 97 could not beat Serena or Venus or Lindsay or Steffi at their peak!

@juju1305 I dont agree. Seles played great but hingis played a horrible match. This was the start of her decline. She would go on to be thrashed by Novotna in the Wimbledon semis and by Davenport in the U.S Open final and never again dominate the game as she had in 1997.

1. I am not a Graf fan. You are pretty stupid to make an assumption of me when you dont know me.

2. Hingis won the Aussie with no competition. Graf, Novotna, and Seles were all missing, and Davenport and Venus lost before the final. She only had to beat Huber and Martinez to win it. She nearly went out to freaking Kournikova in the 2nd round there.

Like I said she went on to be thrashed by Novotna and Davenport in the next 2 slams. So her form clearly declined in 98.

@russianskatingfan The first set was very qualitative in my opinion. 1998 was not Hingis' best year for sure, but it was the lost FO99 final that mentally destroyed her. In early 99, she was really sharp and better than in 1998, or even 97.

@juju1305 yes I agree, after losing the 99 FO final where in watching the mach she wasnt truly even outplayed by a past her prime Graf that day but cracked mentally she became a gradually bigger headcase with each tough loss. I dont think it was just that match, that was the match that started it but it was a chain effect. The 2000 U.S Open semifinal defeat to Venus with that overhead was devastating. And the 2002 Australian Open final vs Capriati was the nail in the coffin for her career.

@russianskatingfan Yes I totally agree. Actually the FO99 was only a mental thing. She turned the crowd against her because of her childish behavior and handed Graf her 22nd GS title on a silver platter instead of sending her packing for good in 2 sets. The two other losses you mention indeed mattered a lot, but I also think that the loss to Capriatoi AO2001 played a role because she thought she had won, having ousted both susters from the tournament and was badly beaten in two easy sets.

@juju1305 Capriati isnt even really the kind of opponent who should be tough for her either. She has alot of power but not the same power as Venus, Serena, or Davenport. She certainly doesnt have a great serve. She isnt a smart player, she doesnt have alot of variety, doesnt volley much or especialy well. She moves well when fit and is pretty consistent. Still that Hingis was regularly losing to Capriati just shows she was fried mentally by that point.

@russianskatingfan Actually, Capriati has great angles off the double backhand side. She showed it during her win over Hingis at the French semis 2001. Her double backhand opens up the court for her lethal forehand (when she's on). That's why Capriati's record against serena is close.
