Spam My Ass.. This is my back yard.. Sitting in the bed of my pickup, I can watch these waves role in.. Not to often will you see my Coast Guard friends brave these seas after a high wind blow of 70+ MPH roll into Charleston, OR t... But tis is the real deal. As an eX- coasty, this is why I joined... to serve and save.
Before the extra jetty was added to make that oyster farm there the north side of the south jetty was probably the best most consistent wave in Oregon.
wow ive never seen waves tha big here in Oregon, of course Ive never been to the south coast. I need to make that a plan before the summer is gone! Props to USCG for their work and dedication.
Um, Wow! You guys are bad fucking ass. That was amazing. That all looks like death water to me...I'm clenching every time I see bow go in and then the boat shoots out back of the wave. That must be amazing thing to be at the wheel. Cost Guard here in AK are amazing.
A lot of years ago When I was a 17 year old kid new to the service, I was sent out on a one of the early 52 footers, on the Columbia river. It was an ugly day and I wasn't sure the boat, or people could get through the surf. You really don't have any choice though when you are told to go, you went. It all worked out fine and I wound up with a real respect for these boats and the people that ran them.
Excellent footage. Clear, good color, not too distant, camera on solid ground, adequate sunlight, but not too much. The 2 largest Surf Boats (47',52'), in sizable breakers.
As a civilian, I have been on that 52' at this location. See the breaks plunging, over topping the bow. Most times the boat waits for the plunge to fall, form a "spilling" break, strike the boat. Breakers are particularly dangerous during the plunge. Watch the boat back down hard to avoid being "caught under the curl".
I showed up to the station right after this video was made. I had gotten a photographer to come out once we did surf drills.

Great video, brings back a lot of memories. That water sure was cold but we sure had fun playing in those breakers. I sure wish I could do it again!!

Nice Work! Great combination of surf drills and Jimmy Hendrix....they kind of belong together.
I served at Yaquina Bay (MK1) and Chetco River (MKC) between 88-92...44-footers and MLB Victory then. Retired CWO2 in '97.
Keep the vids coming. Great job.
