oh dear me ....I,m not suposed to like this stuff at my age ...65.... I LOVE IT >>>this lady is MAGIC she appeals to my artistic eccentricity I think.
@filmbuff64 I'm 57 and love her! Watching this with my 4 year old grandson and he likes the "singing and dancing." Look around old man, you'll fall in love with her.
@MegaWhiner Omg you're so cute. l'm 15 years old, and MY grandpa (age 60) plays the drums in a Rock'n'Roll band and likes Fiona's music, too (I showed him her music), and when he's listening to music or is playing himself, he seems to be born just to rock. And he seems to be as young as I am when he's on stage, I'm so proud of him.
So don't worry, he's older than you and his friends are listening to Folk music, but is he taking care? I really love your thinking.
@butterflypiano Ha! Thanks. When I was a kid I had a drum set, just played to records. Fiona would be hard to play with. How did you find Fiona? You're kind of young for the typical Fiona fan.
@MegaWhiner Yeah, her beats are really difficult, so fast. I play her music on the piano but I've never tried it on the drums before (I sometimes play a little bit around, too) :)Well, I am a huge Regina Spektor Fan (might know her?), and I also listen to stuff like Amanda Palmer (maybe not yours, kinda Punk Cabaret), so mainly female singer-songwriters, mainly on the piano. And yeah, I was rummaging for stuff like that, found Fiona and fell in love with her and her music.
@MegaWhiner And honestly, I don't understand why everyone in my age is listening to crap like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry and all that pop-shit on TV, I mean, you zap to MTV or so and you wnt to listen to music, but what you're finding there is no music anymore, it's just making-money-with-sex and so on. My family is a rock-family, everyone's playing an instrument :D and I early was teached what REAL music is. Thank God we have music like Fiona's, even it's not on TV anymore.
@butterflypiano I took a peek at your channel. There were some complementary comments to you. You must be a nice person. Your grandfather must be proud. I listened to Regina a little. She is a good singer but I like Fiona way more. When Tidal came out I heard Shadow Boxing and really liked the deep voice and song etc. Bought the CD. Now with the internet and U Tube I can watch her while she sings and that totally got me hooked.
@MegaWhiner Hey, thank you so much! That's so nice from you. My friends always say, 'You must be crazy, why are you listening to that sick stuff?' They're so annoying sometimes! Luckily I have two best friends who like me the way I am. (By the way, I live in Germany ;-), please excuse my English) But I really just can talk about good music with adults. Tidal is one of my favorite albums, I have all Fiona-albums on my mp3-Player. The 1st song I covered was Never Is a Promise, I just love it.
Actually, aharper12, it was not a completely flawless performance. When she sang the line "And for a little while, I'll soar the uneven wind, complain and blame the sterile wind", she messed up and said "And for a little while, I'll soar the uneven ground, complain and blame the sterile ground". You can tell by her face that she knows she messed up and is dissapointed. But other than that, I agree the performance was unbelievable and who cares if she messed up, it's freaking amazing Fiona Apple!
I love the video of her live performance when she has to restart because she hadn't sang the song in a long time. Of course, when she restarts its a flawless performance!!!
after all these years,, still the best true singer/ songwriter that has come along in years---- unfortunately guess she will be the first and last of the talented " SPOOKY" girls of our life time-----there will never be another one like her !!!!!
love her, love her, love her. she's brilliant and a true artist. I just got finished watching shakira's new video She Wolf and I was so turned off by her utter nudity and writhing. makes me love that gorgeous fiona let's her understated beauty and art speak for themselves...she's so refreshing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@camiaroad I agree there should be more like Fiona, but to me the Britneys and Parises donot rule. Your point however is well taken. My 90's band is now learning: Criminal (an awesome song)
Fiona is not Janis, Regina Spektor is nothing like her neither is Tori Amos. The whole point of Fiona Apple and her music career is so that she is the only musician like herself because like any artist she wants her work to be special. So I think it impossible and insulting to compare her to anyone. POINT BLANK!
of course every good artist has something unique. but some aspects of their music can be similar to other artists'.
regina spektor has honest, deep, intense, and crazy songwriting, just like fiona apple. there's nothing insulting to the individuality or musicianship of either artists in that comparison.
Doublethink is most certainly right on that question. plenty people can try to be like this woman but everything she has put out has come through her with no force or producing. That voice is irreplaceable and her chosen piano voicings are so full of feeling. Fiona is in the genre of Fiona. So if you want something in its own category I would go with Radiohead and the Mars Volta. Nothing like her except in their equally original songwriting
Not Tori Amos... come on... different styles. Unless we're comparing every good female singer who sits in front of a piano sometimes to Tori Amos. How about comparing all of them to early Kate Bush? I see her as the much more inspiring figure.
really depends on what you like about her. regina spektor's a safe bet, cheery but cute and nuts like her. i just noticed laura marling's pretty good with the darkish folk rock type, but she's a lot less jazzy. i just saw somebody putting lisa hannigan on the same list but i haven't heard a lot of her stuff yet.
there's a japanese artist called kojima mayumi who's got a few good albums with a similar style. there's not a lot of her better stuff on youtube though.
One time I was drawing a picture of her face and it started to look like Jesus Christ. It was really scary and sometimes she kinda looks like a witch that captures souls with her eyes
Ugh I wish the sound quality was better

Ah, Regina Spektor (who's quirkier and less angsty), Tori Amos I guess, and the women where Fiona gets her inspirations from.
But not Kate Nash. Don't let anyone tell you Amy Winehouse or Kate Nash are even close to this. Just a side note. ♥

Note that I said, "I guess,"
I say Tori Amos because people usually connect the two women for whatever reason. (Yeah, the "piano thing".) Kate Bush is a much better example, yes.

Except that Fiona writes quality music, actually has musical and vocal talent, and doesn't pose to fit in with a certain brand of audience.
Other than those things, sure, Fiona could be the Janis of our generation.
