I play bass and can't use picks. They seem to hate me. However, that being said, some songs need picks. When to use or not use a pick is based on the song, if you are covering one. Not what you prefer. Picks sound different than using fingers. If you're covering a song and want the cover to sound like the song, you should use pick/fingers like the origional did.  If you want to hear a certain sound, it's one thing. If you want to play a cover, do it right.

Don't listen to people saying 'picks suck, use your fingers'. I have respect for, and play all different music genres on bass. Some I use fingers, some I pick and some I slap.

i think by using a pick it gives a more "rock n roll" edge to it and by using your fingers it is more softer

a lot of times a pick is used for more of a treble sound on the bass. when someone described it to me they called it a "poppier" sound. Punk rock uses picks alot but if you look at a lot of the earlier rock bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and even Nirvana, all the bassists plucked the strings.

the bass and guitar are easy but they have they technique and the some things can help you to play more good, example: the guitarists need to have small fingers to play very nice the guitar and the bassists need to have large fingers and big hehehe but thats not impediment to play the instrument you like, i'm a bassists and i have tiny and small fingers hahaha and i play the bass very good like a pro so what... ^^
