  • I remember going to his house in Radcliffe Road in Bolton many years ago and looking down onto his workshop. He was one of a kind.

  • i was watching John bishops britain, and it had 2 so called comedians from Bolton on.

and they mentioned the Fred Dibnah statue, saying why is there a statue to fred dibnah, who is fred dibnah.

  • What a wonderful Man !

one of the most interesting people on Television. He always showed total enthusiasm for our heritage. I learnt a lot about our ancestral past and his programmes showed how people - in their environs - lived. My BIG regret is never meeting the Man personally. FRED DIBNAH - R.I.P.

    R.I.P. Fred.

  • R.I.P. Fred Dibnah.

  • THE GRAFTER!!

  • If you want to know what an English man is then you nedd go no further than Fred Dibnah.

  • The character, the atmosphere, nostalgia, the true grit of a man,who could entertain, with an oily rag a traction engine and some firewood and matches-GENIUS. All kids [and most adults]want to watch nowadays is x-factor/pop idol, and all the other staged nonsense creating a "HERO"out of some slightly talented ,disposable 15 year old kid being exploited so COWELL and Co,can keep increasing their wealth exponentially.DisguSTING.R.I.P Fred Dibnah, the REAL DEAL.

  • I Agree

  • a national hero sadly missed

  • Bloody Great,

They should have bottled his energy, his enthusiasm for life, his country and his Queen and fed it to the nation.

    Bloody Great

  • this man was a legend he will never be replaced a very talanted man i loved him r.i.p.mate

  • I am from Bolton and know where his house is. I can assure you he never made a fortune and anyway what if he did the man deserved it true British Grafter wish there were more like him.

  • @dandaps if he made a fortune he would of moved to blackpool, nono, he would of moved somewhere else though

  • and you fred last of none ,u was a perfection wished you could have taught me rip legend

  • i just love this man.

  • this man was just pure brilliance,

  • Fred Dibnah's rough-hewn Lancastrian manner (and his ever-present flat cap) belied his gentle, self-taught philosophical outlook.

  • Wonderful man

  • i love fred and his ways you no. but cant help thinking that he made a bloody fortune out of destroying our british heritage, he use to repair those old chimneys years ago but made a fotune smashing the things down

  • i think if it had been upto fred, he would have left them chimneys standing, but it wasn't.. they had to come down one way or another.. but at least the way fred took them down, they went down smoking.. didnt they.. i loved him too, he was the man.. ps.. have you heard my song fred dibnah, missing you.. find it on my channel...

  • It something that he himself loathed to do was to knock them down. But in his mind the way he knocks them down he felt gave them a chance to stand proud until their weight brought them down, not like the dynamite me who just blow them to bits.

  • dynamite men**

  • if he did'nt someone else would have done . as to making a bloody fortune i don't really think he did . read david hall's biography of him to see what i base my opinion on . any parts needed for restration of his steam engines he usually made himself .

  • tipperscum-no this was Park Mill Bleasdale St Royton Oldham the mill was built in 1912 it was initially Park No2 Mill as the Park No 1 was renamed Larch it was owned by The Shiloh Group Roytons independent Cotton Spinning Company Despite a serious blaze in 1970 It survived another 30yrs before it eventually closed in 2001 it was demolished 3 yrs later houses now occupy the site Maple No 2 is the mill that was destroyed by fire on 21,3,2009

  • What a bloody legend.

    One of those British greats!

  • rip fred!

  • If i had a fraction of the skill that bloke had,i'd be chuffed to buggery.

  • The flute piece at the beginning is Guilio Briccialdi Carnival Of Venice performed by James Galway and National Philharmonic Orchestra it was the main theme to Fred Dibnah. Steeplejack 1979 A Year With Fred 1982 ,1986 and 1987 and Life With Fred 1994 im not sure about the other piece tho

  • Hi what is that music called in the background.

  • the second piece is called - sarabande by handel.

  • Fred Dibnah was an inspiration to so many of us honest, hard working and passionate about his job be it demolishing chimneys or his love of steam engines and the industrial bygone era that was part of his past and proud of his heritage. ive met him a few times over the years we were at The Park Mill site that day as id worked there many moons before a true gentleman God Bless R.I.P

  • Park Mill belonged to Shiloh Spinners it was probably the last cotton mill to close in Royton i worked at the mill 10 yrs ago in the healthcare part sad to see it go Sandy Mill was gone a year later Royton had some great cotton mills especially the Roy and Elk also owned by Shiloh its just sad to see them dissapear they are a monument to the town and just replaced by houses or retail parks

  • sptol - spot on with all your comments about fred. what was the name of the mill that was on fire around oldham mabey a month or two back. was it this one ?

  • i think by this time fred was on the way out with cancer. very sad.

  • gone but never forgotten!

    a true legend.

everytime i look at dixons chimney here in carlisle,i think of old fred dibnah.

  • God Bless ya!

  • a national treasure no doubt

  • Legend

  • A fantastic Steeplejack, Greatly missed

  • I was There

  • THere's something awfully sad about this whole moment - as if Britain was losing something behind Her back; or perhaps right in front of Her, without caring about it.

    RIP Dibner.

  • rip fred.. this country is about people like him... a good comment at 1.37... england will never be like it was when he was here, ever again and its sad......... what a chap...

  • Met Fred and his Lads once in Royton, they were doing a repair on a chimney at a place I was ratcatching for.A real down to earth character, sadly born 150 years too late. Who knows what great contribution the man could have made to the Industrial revolution.

  • they dont make people like fred anymore

  • Ohhh yes they do - we just don't notice until they're gone is all.

  • FRED IS JUST LIKE MY GRANDAD (R.I.P) and fred is greatly missed by thousands. x

Gone but never forgotten, They dont make em like they used to Fred !

  • whats the music at 3:24??

  • i luv that guy

  • health and safety my arse!

  • two of the worst words ever

  • What a character! Balls as big as coconuts! To see this guy in his younger days, walking around on timber scaff 200ft up with no harness. that gives you shivers! And to think he used to have a couple of beers beforehand to steady his nerves! When people used to say "should you do that?, he would reply, "you try doing this job without drinking"! LOL...Legend!!

  • I can't decide whether I'm glad not to see the poor grand old chimney fall, or if I feel cheated out of the end. Don't you have the film of the chimney falling?

  • I'm guessing the video can't have fully loaded as you do get to see the chimney fall at around 5:25 and from various different angles further on.

  • You were right, I got the whole film this time. That music bring tears to your eyes eh? I grew up amongst mills like this and although I didn't value them at the time, it's sad to see those magnificent chimneys go. A fine tribute to good old Fred, a real legend. Many thanks.

  • Legend is a word that is over used in Britain today but it is a word that could have been invented for Fred. A true Great Brit and very sadly missed. People like Fred have put the Great into Great Britain.

    RIP.

  • what would fred make of the twin towers??????

  • RE: twin towers-

He would have lit the fire at the bottom, for a start - well he would have got his wife to do it. But he would have made sure it was empty first.

In a few decades he'll be reincarnated:

"Eeh op there goes the Empire State - pity I couldn't repair it... eh if I don't do this someone else would have had ta... they aint nor use to anyone these days... an 'undred yurs ago there used to be literally thowsands of em skyscrapers bot most of em are gone now ... sad, eh? Yeh..."

  • Top bloke!

It's a bloody shame the BBC didn't pay him more for the early documentaries, they're priceless. The first won a BAFTA and yet in 1997 Fred was nearly broke.
