tipperscum-no this was Park Mill Bleasdale St Royton Oldham the mill was built in 1912 it was initially Park No2 Mill as the Park No 1 was renamed Larch it was owned by The Shiloh Group Roytons independent Cotton Spinning Company Despite a serious blaze in 1970 It survived another 30yrs before it eventually closed in 2001 it was demolished 3 yrs later houses now occupy the site Maple No 2 is the mill that was destroyed by fire on 21,3,2009
The flute piece at the beginning is Guilio Briccialdi Carnival Of Venice performed by James Galway and National Philharmonic Orchestra it was the main theme to Fred Dibnah. Steeplejack 1979 A Year With Fred 1982 ,1986 and 1987 and Life With Fred 1994 im not sure about the other piece tho
Fred Dibnah was an inspiration to so many of us honest, hard working and passionate about his job be it demolishing chimneys or his love of steam engines and the industrial bygone era that was part of his past and proud of his heritage. ive met him a few times over the years we were at The Park Mill site that day as id worked there many moons before a true gentleman God Bless R.I.P

sptol - spot on with all your comments about fred. what was the name of the mill that was on fire around oldham mabey a month or two back. was it this one ?
THere's something awfully sad about this whole moment - as if Britain was losing something behind Her back; or perhaps right in front of Her, without caring about it.
rip fred.. this country is about people like him... a good comment at 1.37... england will never be like it was when he was here, ever again and its sad......... what a chap...
Met Fred and his Lads once in Royton, they were doing a repair on a chimney at a place I was ratcatching for.A real down to earth character, sadly born 150 years too late. Who knows what great contribution the man could have made to the Industrial revolution.
What a character! Balls as big as coconuts! To see this guy in his younger days, walking around on timber scaff 200ft up with no harness. that gives you shivers! And to think he used to have a couple of beers beforehand to steady his nerves! When people used to say "should you do that?, he would reply, "you try doing this job without drinking"! LOL...Legend!!
I can't decide whether I'm glad not to see the poor grand old chimney fall, or if I feel cheated out of the end. Don't you have the film of the chimney falling?
You were right, I got the whole film this time. That music bring tears to your eyes eh? I grew up amongst mills like this and although I didn't value them at the time, it's sad to see those magnificent chimneys go. A fine tribute to good old Fred, a real legend. Many thanks.
Legend is a word that is over used in Britain today but it is a word that could have been invented for Fred. A true Great Brit and very sadly missed. People like Fred have put the Great into Great Britain.
He would have lit the fire at the bottom, for a start - well he would have got his wife to do it. But he would have made sure it was empty first.

It's a bloody shame the BBC didn't pay him more for the early documentaries, they're priceless. The first won a BAFTA and yet in 1997 Fred was nearly broke.
Thankfully he did well out of the later ones - RIP Fred.
