@BringthePain1000 Actually the book is more about Eastern Mysticism than Christianity. Maybe Mysticism is the wrong word. I guess Zen would be more appropriate. Read the book. It is far better than the movie.
@clipboardcrotch I've read the Bhagavad Gita, which this move is based on, and it isn't a Zen movie. The book itself is the guidebook for the Hindu peoples in India. Its like a long story, but interestingly enough it has their teachings in it, as Arjuna, the character which is Junah in this film, talks to Krishna throughout, Bagger.
'The Woods' categorically defines the principle and wisdom of coming to a point in your life when you need to make a conscious decision to let go of a problem or of guilt, and leave it behind forever. and not to conform to everyone else's ideas of what I need to do or be. "The Field' reminds me that... no matter what outside influences try to hold me down, I have to focus on what I need, what works for me, and not to conform to everyone else's ideas of what I need to do or be.
I tell ya.. I've watched this movie several times. It never gets old. The 2 scenes that are especially gripping for me is 'The Woods' and 'The Field'.
I survived a crash in which I was t-boned by an 80,000 pound tanker that was moving 50 mph. I was in a coma for six days and had massive brain surgery...If you saw and spoke with me you could never tell that I have been through such an ordeal....I just saw this movie a few days ago....I cannot even begin to explain how much "the field" part moved me. I nearly tasted deaths supper and know that life is definitely not what you see...but what you feel inside yourself.
@JamesSBeutjer Indeed my friend, you get it. It's not what you see, it's what you feel. The mind, your brain, can't understand it, it's an experience that can only be felt and experienced when you fully connect to that peace and stillness behind the form, the brain, the thoughts. When you fully connect to the consciousness, the silence and stilness in which all the form of the world and the universe happens.
I love this film. Its brilliant. On Amazon in the Customer Reviews the argument is made - and is convincing - that this film is based on Hindu Philosophy in the Bhagavad-Gita. Interesting premise. This is a very special film.
this is the meaning of life, the truth is around us but we cant see it, close your eyes, let everything go and feel the life around you...don't think about it, feel it
I don't care how deep in the field you are. If you don't keep your left wrist flat that ball will literally be in the field of trees on the right side of the hole. Justin Timberlake would have been better choice to play Junnah. At least he plays golf. Matt Damon's swing is awful.
AWFUL, this is a movie with Will Smith and Matt Damon, how its filmt is just perfect. i think that you dont understand wat the story behind this movie is. This is a GOOD MOVIE
this movie is about far more than golf, its about life.. golf is the tool used to get the message over... the finding of inner peace and harmony in the most unlikely of places... at times when you need it most..
Let me clarify. This movie is very watchable. When compared to the book. It just doesn't measure up. I'll give you one example. Bagger Vance is portrayed in this movie as an angel of some kind and in the book he is more like a warrior god. In book form Bagger's depth and complexity makes him IMO one greatest literary characters of the 20th Century. In this movie he is reduced to the "Mystical Negro" character so often associated with Hollywood. Trust me I know this movie very well.
@cmc10101 My better half who doesn't play golf sent me a link to this clip. She understands the meaning of the speech and I told her that is what Golf is about. She laughed at the concept of Golf, It is a zen experience when played right.

"Bagger always said
it is a game
that can't be won
only played.
So I played.
I play on.
I play for the moments yet to come.
Looking for my place in the field."
