Stuck up snobs, the bunch of you. Fashion is an art form. Like music, painting, theatre, literature, It's hard for some people to get it . Open your minds a bit. you elitists.
I love this vid. uptight people who "know" things are so pathetic! "What costume shall the poor girl wear?" As a poor girl model- I really dig these prints- and put to my favorite song - the one that always brings tears- esp. with a bottle of vodka - in a San Francisco misty tuesday .... and remembering the sadness of me and my friends being exploited - as if we were inadament ..... I think that's right ... inadement? .... Now - I watch from the seat. A beautiful tradgedy!
@jonmoontrip Whatever. Fashion is trivial and mundane. Fashion models are probably trivial and mundane, too. I can't really say anything though because I've never met a model. Lou Reed's lyrics are as profound and deep as the universe.
I hate this video. it really trivializes the song. Not that you have to read too much into the song, but responding with fashion just because of the lyric " and what costume shall the poor girl wear to all tomorrows parties..." is cheap.
@creamstripe I like the juxtaposition of the happy models in pretty clothes with the sadness of the song. What kind of video do you think should accompany it? Some girl with mascara running down her face, running through an alley way?
Why must beauty be natural? Sex symbols are perceived to be exceptionally beautiful yet as you pointed out, they rely heavily on artificial beauty. Therefore it's safe to say that the general public that creates these sex symbols disagrees with you.
I first heard this almost 40 years ago, I still think it's perfect. Nico's voice is just right for the mood, and the ostrich guitar emphasises are amazing!
The video is a perfectly reasonable response and up-to-date comment on the song, which was a comment the superficiality of the ultra-fashionable Factory party scene around Warhol, and what lurked behind the surface.
The choice of shots works, the models are beautiful, the clothes and make-up fantasy, then the visual effects added reflect the distortion implied by the lyrics and the music (guitar strings all tuned to D, paper clips intertwined with the piano strings to change their sounds).
this is the version i have on cd. there is doubled versions on other vids. imho, it ruins the song. as far as i can tell, this one is the original version. 5 stars for being the original.
you have no clue where this song is coming from, it is meant to be superficial, its about going to parties with the most superficial of people, Andy Warhol.
The song is not meant to be superficial. It's sort of a critism to fashion victims. So, it is not fitting to use footage of lame fashion show and lame superficial models, unless it is in an ironic way, which i highly doubt.
this song actually cuts pretty deep in my opinion. to use this type of footage may have supposed to been ironic, but it really just doesn't fit the mood of the song at all
Fashion is still lame, and beauty has nothing to do with fashion. Being beautiful or ugly means nothing anyway. Too many people feel concerned about what they look like.
It is ironic you claim "beauty means nothing" considering the examples YOU brought up (Marilyn Monroe, excess of makeup and concern with appearances) indicate the exact opposite; that beauty means a lot to a lot of people (just as do many largely inherent characteristics). Though it is no longer politically correct to admit, physical attraction will always be a necessary incentive in the continuation of the species, and therefore our lives.
And most of the beaities you worship are abusing make up. Having style doesn't mean that someone is beautiful. Maryilyn Monroe was just average looking once the make up was gone as with most girls.
what is this fuckin video? it doesnt fit with the song i bet my left testicle that if lou reed watched this video he would spit on his computer screen
Indeed, the video is awful. it does not fit the song at all. Anyone with sense or taste could see that. The song, however, is magnificent. Nico, forever!
The beginning (and continued underlying guitar) instantly reminded me of 'Rise' by PIL. I do quite like this, perhaps the best known of Velvet Underground's songs.
And just for the record - I reckon the vast majority of Lou Reed's solo pop music is utter rubbish, including the banal 'Walk on the Wild Side'. Please insert abuse below.
The intro makes your hairs stand on end!!!........another fine (drug-induced)tune from a great band who mixed music with art(that is with a silent 'f'):)
This is all about the pseudo hedonists leading empty, lonely lives for crying out loud. Listen to the lyrics. VU + Nico summed up so many feelings of joy, despair, inadequacy and dependency. So much talent, so much genus and so little credit - despite their god like status. This band did and said more than any other band before or after.
this song written by lou reed is about what he saw and heard at the factory and from the factory crowd it was andy warhol's favorite velvet underground song
All very interesting opinions, but this song isn't about Fashion Modeling. It's about depraved jet-set living from party to party ("where shall she be, when midnight comes around?"), and self-desructive "swinging" lifestyle ("and die behind the door").
Well that is indeed sad. Today it's all about image and little girls fall for the photoshopped images in magazines. Society should teach them not to but they don't. It ain't important no more what a woman has to say only what she looks like. It's a decline of human intelligence in general.
the problem fashion and the fashion /media/ advertising industry is that they make young girls believe that it is enough to look good to be succesful in life and women should mainly (or even: only) be concerned with their looks. what about their feelings, thoughts, actions, skills, etc.?
This song is a timeless masterpiece. The Velvet Underground is one of the greatest bands of all time. Although the video is supposed to be a joke, Nico actually had been a model, so it's not as incongruent a mix (Vevet Underground with fashion models) as one might initially think.
Stuck up snobs, the bunch of you. Fashion is an art form. Like music, painting, theatre, literature, It's hard for some people to get it . Open your minds a bit. you elitists.

"Fashion is still lame, and beauty has nothing to do with fashion."
Beauty is a key component to fashion because it is an industry and market based on aesthetics and improving one's appearance. Granted

Just because they are models does not mean that they are all superficial. You shouldn't confine them to one stereotype.
