There are some appalling comments on here, I think both sides fought bravely. The British invented concentration camps for the best of reasons. However, the camps were not mananged properly, there was a lack of food, Boer's loyal to Britain and those not were all grouped together resulting in them killing one another. the consequences were terrible. Although, the idea to deprive the Boer forces of there supply's was sound, and it brought the war to an end.

Yes, you forgot to mention the spread of democracy, the rule of law, expanion of trade and wealth, and the infrastructure to hold countries together (railways, telegraph lines, newspapers and the English language). If we check history we will find that the Brits saved the asses of the Dutch Boers(with all due respect) in 1879 when the crown fought the Zulus with terrible loss of life to their troops, finally defeating Cetswayho in March/April 1879. The Boers kept trying to steal land in the disputed Zululand territory. One reason they were harrased and killed by the Zulu. There are some appalling comments on here, I think both sides fought bravely. The British invented concentration camps for the best of reasons. However, the camps were not mananged properly, there was a lack of food, Boer's loyal to Britain and those not were all grouped together resulting in them killing one another. the consequences were terrible. Although, the idea to deprive the Boer forces of there supply's was sound, and it brought the war to an end.

Its a good documentary but he underestimates the Boers.He keeps calling them farmers. they WERE farmers but also great horsemen and commandos.They adapted to fighting superbly be it guerilla warfare or open fighting such as Spion Kop

no he doesn't... he is only seeking to remind us that before they became soldiers (through on-the-job training) they were farmers.. it is just to keep touching on the fact that pro-soldiers met farmers, not to take credit away from them but to take it away from the british... u miss the point entirely.. noone disputes that they weren't good soldiers.

I listened to a talk by this guy (Kenneth Griffith about ten years ago (he died a year ago if I recall). He was passionately anti-British Empire to a sickening degree, wanting us out of Ireland too. He cannot necessearily be relied upon to be impartial.

Yes, you forgot to mention the spread of democracy, the rule of law, expanion of trade and wealth, and the infrastructure to hold countries together (railways, telegraph lines, newspapers and the English language). Britain was of course the first major power to outlaw slavery and enforce that ban internationally. Empire only worked because local people contributed, as they understood the benefits of good governance brought by Britain. That's why the Empire lasted so long.

@cholliday666 Bull! England never was a democracy. They are subjects to this day. And the FREE Boer republics already had equal representation for all the burghers' families. No doubt that British rule was a boon to the enemies of Britain's enemies, but that doesn't mean it was good for the Boers.

i am surprised at how this guy actually admits the brutality of the empire, which is very admirable. My opinion is also strong on this issue. However, one can hardly then call this a documentary because, admittedly, it is biased and focuses a lot on trying to spawn sympathy for the Boer people instead of talking more about battles and strategies and stuff.
Not complaining, though. I am a Boer myself :D
