I think because the game was soo laggy, you appeared (ON HIS SCREEN) closer than that or even on the ground in his lunge range and well, where you are on your screen, the lunge still correlates with the distance he is on this video and hence a huge lunge, lag can be so annoying and also he could be a lagging cheater and have a lag switch!

There was an epic lag spike. he jumped, but meleed right after the full jump and if you noticed melee gives you a slight lunge at the person.

Well you mentioned being stuck on respawn, was the game lagging? If so, he may have had a sword but due to the lag the game recognized it as an AR for you. That's my only guess and it's highly unlikely but that's all I can think of.
