sounds like a good test to me...lol I would appreciate it if you could do that. I haven't ever used this type of stove, always used propane, but it's interesting to know how it compares to propane.
@perkinsfan I am not sure. I never really tested it with a certain amount. I just put some in and went with it. I think this is a stove that would use a lot of fuel. Not so much that you couldnt carry the weight, but for some it might not be an efficient design for an alcohol stove. It burns real hot and fast due to the larger design and larger holes. It works well with a bigger mess kit. I could give it a test and get back to you if you want.
So thats why I see all those circular burn marks in shelters on the AT. Perhaps making a metal dish to hold the preheat alcohol will keep people from burning down shelters. Just a thought.
@MAP14100 I use denatured alcohol. I am not sure what proof that is. 91% sounds like rubbing alcohol maybe? You can use that, but it does not burn as well and is a bit sooty (dirtier flame)
The jets look enormous to me but I cannot quibble with the flame pattern, it looks great. I'm starting to think jet size is less important than uniformity. I like the offset jets and will try this on my next stove as well. Nice work!
Thanks. The jets are quite big, I guess I was kind of going for that. At first I had one set of holes, and drilled the others after constuction to get better performance. The stove does the job every time. All I ever boil is two cups and it does it pretty fast, burns very hot. Capable of boiling 4 cups in about 7 min. My only real complaint on this one is that it consumes a lot of fuel. But I am willing to flex because of the other positives.
personally I JB Welded a bottom of a coke can cut at 3/16 of an inch tall to the bottom of the stove so I always know where it is. Works great too. Also I wanted to let you know I am now working on the same type of jet hole pattern for my next WhiteBox Knock off thanks to this video, So thank you for the inspiration and the idea.
Hole size on this is 7/64. I had originally just the top set of holes. I tested it out and wanted it to preform better. I drilled the bottom set and tried it out. Worked a lot better. My original was made from the bud bottle, with one set of smaller holes that are closer toghther. It works good as well. I like the patern on this one better.
can you go without the priming puddle beneath?

does it self light? or do you have to light the jets yourself?

How much fuel does it take to boil the 4 cups of water? Just curious about how long the flame will last from.... say... an ounce of fuel?

Are those cans of solvent i see in the background?
You are gonna burn your house down, sonny.
TinyCoconut 1 year ago
@TinyCoconut Yes they are. Cans of a finishing product. I should have been more careful. If something went wrong, it could have gotten much worse.
aokspage 1 year ago
Could be. Some people do use a pan for them. Be responsibleI guess...right?

When i made mine i used a nylon cord that I wet with the alcohol and i JB welded it around it works really good as a starter thin.

I saw that feature on one of the videos I watched before I made the stove. I didnt want anything on the outside. But it does work well, as a primer.

i like it. similar to the pimbus 2008 design.
its good to see american ingenuity alive and well. nice work.

Nice flame pattern. Have you thought about a preheater pan for the bottom? Simple tools used in the creation of a good working stove. Nice video.
NCHiker1970 3 years ago
Thank you. I did have a pan for it, but it warped. I preheated for the video sake. In the woods I can just light and be patient.
