  • miss you already Hubert

  • R.I.P. Hubert. You've always been one of my biggest influences ever!

  • ...and Wolf's piano player for 12 years, Henry Gray, is here, too!

  • when you say hubert you are pretty much talkin bout history

  • Damn Dave Jo Hansen really has a voice for this song. Also he looks weird with a beard.

  • Damn Dave Jo Hansen really has a voice for this song.

  • david johnsen as new york dolls rocker?

  • I think my name is inside that orange Strat Hubert is playing, I vaguely remember setting it up for him.

  • Better late than never. This is at the New Daisy Theatre on Beale Street in Memphis. It was put together as a Howlin Wolf tribute. We had only glanced at the lineup. It was a busy busy week. And during soundcheck, it was just stellar. And we looked up and were like ohmygod that's Buster Poindexter (Johansen). Steady Rollin Bob Margolin is in there too.

  • @futureprimitive Yep.New Daisy, Memphis. I was at this show. It was part of the Blues Foundation's W C Handy Awards. You can see the Blues Foundation banners on the back of the stage.. Hubert Sumlin, Bob Margolin, Charlie Musselwhite, Bob Stroger on bass. I don't recognize the drummer.

  • @arkaburger

The drummer is me, RUSS WILSON. I played with Bob Margolin in 2001/2002.

And the bass player is Calvin "Fuzz" Jones.

  • This video is from the DVD tribute to BB King - in NYC

  • Okay.

So, I always think of Johansen & comedic acting & "Hit The Road Jack" from that movie. NY Dolls being after my time.

But this is seriously, friggin GREAT. The "inspired" Stones, Who, et al, just can't touch this and the arrangement and production quality is fantastic.

    THANKS!

  • I just discovered Hubert today while listening to my television's blues radio station. Now I've fallen in love with another blues singer. Sorry B B King!

  • Nobody ever has or ever will equal the inimitable Howlin' Wolf, but David does better than most and Hubert is obviously enjoying himself here, so you purists should just go listen to your original 78s and leave live music to the living.

  • Does anyone know what key is that harp is?

  • That's Charlie Musselwhite on harp. No telling what he's playing, it could be a chromonica.

  • @brandnutopian No, it couldn't. Those who play harmonicas can tell by the sound whether it's a chromatic or not. When this was recorded Charlie was probably still playing Lee Oskars. Since then I think he might have moved on to another manufacturer, or customs. But he certainly wasn't playing a chromonica. He plays 12 hole diatonic blues harps.

  • wow, Great line up! you fkn rocked the vocals brother! very very nice. Thanks

  • Henry Gray at the keys and Calvin "Fuzz" Jones on bass. Henry just brought a new CD out

  • Another job well done, Great band & a great song.

  • This is great,love it.

  • You are a complete idiot. Apparently you have no idea who you are insulting. Yep that's Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin, legendary harp player Charlie Musselwhite, Steady Rollin Bob Margolin on second guitar and David Johansen on vocals. Before you make comments know what your talking about. As stated before you are an idiot.

  • How can you insult this? You could not possibly have a more competent group of blues players here. You could not find a more appropriate lineup for this material. This is like saying Ozzy Ozbourne ruined a Black Sabbath song. Idiot.

  • that dude on harp is the blues legend, charlie musselwhite

  • Hubert is the coolest dude!!!

  • and bob margolin!!!!

  • I love Johansen like this, with Sumlin. Best ever is their version of Killing Floor!!

  • That was on Lightnin in a Bottle. Ir was killer! I can't find it on You Tube. Wish someone would post it.

  • Not a bad rendition. It's hard to get that Howlin' Wolf moan.

  • Damn good rendition - nailin Chester is damn near impossible. Two who have come close (David Johansen & Don Van Vliet)

  • Hubert Sumlin is the MAN!

  • Damn awesome. How would you like to walk in off the street and hear this music? You'll forget to drink your beer.

  • charlie musselwhite on harp

  • Thanks, Jem.

What an excellent little jam on a tune that I first heard years ago on a Yardbirds album. That band covered some fine blues.

If anyone can provide more details: venue, drummer, bassist etc. - it would be appreciated.

  • Fantastic clip. Thanks jemf999. A true jem.

  • Watch my video, set to the music of Watermelon Slim - I've Got News For You !!

  • O man, how in the world did Hubert Sumlin get mixed up with David Johansen?! This is awesome!

  • this guy plays harmonica like the wolf, great vibrato... also long live Hubert Sumlin

  • Is that the strat Clapton gave him while in in the London in the 60's?

  • who plays the bass?

  • @quundar Bass is Bob Stroger

  • I would favorite this but David Johansen scares me. What a performance by Mussellwhite and Hubert Sumlin though.

  • iv'e got cds from all these artists individually,.........but all playing together..... a gem !

  • amazing!!! really, really great!

  • i cant believe he jammed with hubert

  • this is a great video where did it come from David Jo is a true rocknroller he is the real thing and Hubert is one of the only orignators of the sound we all love still alive. God bless him

  • I don't know where it came from originally but this is on the extras of the DVD "Blues: The Road to Memphis"

  • aint yall forgettin hubert? he's the real master up there

  • The other guitarist Bob Margolin.

  • That is great,David Jo can do it all man

  • It s amazing to see how a proto-punk heroe becomes such a serious bluesman. Non postmodern, sounds like he s into it.

  • Well, if you think about it, a lot of the Dolls stuff was essentially 50's and 60's R&B played fast, loud and distorted. Still, at the end of the day, it was pretty much R&B. I can see where David gets the connection.

  • the harmonicist is charlie musselwhite.
