  • Hi Mike, the caves in your video looks really interesting. Can you tell us which part of Mendocino did you took this video? I would love to go see this place my self. thank you

  • @vincelee7676 Hi Vince, this is one of my favorite dive/yak locations to play around in especially when the outside is blow-in out. Caspar is 5.5mi south of Fort Bragg, Ca. Caspar has a few kayak friendly tunnels (.35mi from the beach) on the NORTH side that lead into calm lagoons.

  • Man, I REALLLY need to do this some day!

  • i went crabbing there about a month ago you a local ? i made a wooden 6 foot boat i go crabbing out of usually noyo bay but i wanted to try there i got 2 7 inchers and a 6 inch i use my oars until i get out far enough to start up my little 2 hp honda outboard that time i was just in the cove but next i want to try going out alot farther where you can look along the coast. nice video

  • @noyocrabber Thanks 'noyocrabber'. No, I live in Lake County. I'm looking forward venturing further up the coast from Caspar Cove to. Would you crab the cove again? I've wanted to give it a try.

  • @mikemanges ya id definately crab the cove again i went a few weekends ago and got one crab and 11 urchins but there was alot of other people crabbing. At the end i pulled up a 22 inch lingcod in one of my rings i have 6 rings and 2 pots let me know how you did if you go crabbing and what kind of gear you use. what kind of cam is it cause i want to make videos of me crabbing and bottomfishing. thanks for the reply

  • great video,me and a couple of friends r going for the first time in fort bragg where would b a good spot to go, for r fist time?

  • wow i wanna go there now.

  • I know that beach. Beautiful!

Brings back many fond and blessed memories.

    Thanks, Mike.

  • It's my pleasure to share what this cove has to offer. It has it all in one compact location, and with active stewardship will continue to be a clean and healthy spot.

  • Hi Mike, that's an awesome video.

It looks like you're having good fun...!!!

I want to dive again soon.

Where did you buy your wet suit and your

    dive kayak..???

  • Hi mepipeline,

Thanks for your comment. My dive suit is a Picaso 7mm (Freedive Shop in Sacramento) it is made of Sheiko neoprene, very warm and comfortable. I bought my Scuper Pro Ocean kayak 2nd hand, the only way to go if you ask me...beats kicking out and back in any day, plus their fantastic to fish out of.

  • Great videos Mike, they make me want to get up to Mendocino to do some diving. Although they'd be even better with some underwater footage. Is your camera not an under water one?

  • superb video mike.

ever got harassed by sea lions?

they put the fear of God in me when I'm spear fishing :)) more than sharks.

I would say that's a great abalone catch, though with my luck , I would have had the fish & game warden ready for me at the beach with a ticket because I have not already tagged the abbs

    keep up the good work

  • Thanks for your comment (lagunabeachlife), and YES I do get buzzed from time to time by sea lions. Most of my visitors are of the smaller variety, like harbor seals. I try to stay fairly close to my yak while hunting, so I can clear my hook without a long kick. I know what you mean though, I feel really small and alone when something comes at me unannounced.

As for not having my abs tagged at the time of the video...GUILTY. What can I say, old habits die hard.

    Mike

  • Thanks for the comment Matt

  • great vid mike job well done.

  • Nice vid, Mike.

Just got into ab diving this year but my friends and I have taken to it pretty quick. Trying to get my first trophy before the season is up!

  • Thanks for your comment Gonzo. Good luck hunting for that ever so hard to find 10" Now that I'm kayaking out to thoes hard to reach locations, I'm finding much larger abs. If you haven't tried yaking out, you might consider giving it a try. Keep me posted on you success, and be safe out there...Mike

  • mike, being an experienced snorkel diver from the 70's on the Mendocino coast really enjoyed your video--what type camera did you use??? i notice you were diving in a seal area---ever see a sharks in the area feeding on the seals. if you need a diving buddy let me know--your mellow sense would be relaxing to be around, dr. john

  • thanks dr. john. I used a Canon A560 to shoot this movie. No I have never seen a shark while in the water. I actually feel more comfortable when seals are in the area while I dive. I pay attention to their activity, or lack of, as a warning tool. I would love to have you join me, I'm thinking of maybe going out this weekend conditions permiting, if your interested.

  • Ya know, parts of the video are pretty nerdy I have to admit. Thanks for the comments and yes it was an awesome dive day.

    mm

  • You sure picked a nice day. That's what its all about.

  • Yes, it was one of those 'rock-skipping' days. Thanks for the comment.
