Nice cold start with a real Demon of a Driver not even giving it chance to warm up. I remember being behind 37408 on the 16:50 Glasgow Queen St Fort William in 1988, and it doing the same! The tunnel didn't clear for a week :-)
It was running for about 10 minutes after being off for 2 days, it went to crown point for fuel, an hour later it was still sounding rough and clagging on one side.

Sounds like either a car I once drove-or an old steam locomotive! Or is it? I'd personally rather smell coal smoke than diesel exhaust!

Alcos will often smoke more when starving for fuel, and judging from the unevenness of the sound, I'd say there's air in the fuel rack somewhere.
