What surprises me a bit is that Calabassi plays Soler with such great baroque style excellently, and his Bach (Departure of Brother) has nothing to do with Bach or the Baroque. One needs to go back to the harpsichord to get into the genre and then return to the piano in order to get closer to Bach´s medium.
@tonecolor WRONG. they are evidence of great deception and self-importance. this guy is following in the steps of Lang Lang with those horrific facial expressions. Those expressions are about the sickest thing i've ever seen.
He plays the Appassionata aggressively, as so many pianists do today. And he can't handle technically the fast tempos he takes. Well, maybe that's what you have to do in a competition. But his theatrical mugging is a major turnoff to me.
what are you talking about "can't handle technically" if he couldn't play the correct technique, there's no way he even would be considered for this competition. I agree about the theatrics, but you don't have to look at him when he plays.
A thoroughly nice guy with a luminous, warm tone, and immaculate voicing in the chordal opening of the slow movement - slight hint of jazzy syncopation notwithstanding. There are now more conservatoires, musicians, orchestras, competitions and concerts than ever before. I don't know where you live but in London the scene is exhaustingly vibrant. There is no need for your pessimism.

He admits to listening to more pop than classical.Well,it shows...Cliburn competition has been leading the way in destruction of culture from the inside, nothing new here.

Talent is hatred for bad music just as much as love for good music. The act of presenting classical as/with pop for the brain-dead US audiences was invented by Liberace.
I`m in such a good company of other snobs from Bach to Horowitz.Horowiz once saw his CD`s advertized on the same page with the Beatles and commented that classical music would not exist in 50 years.I think we have about 3 more years to go.

should writers of today return to parchment and pen, then return to computers?

People need to do what ever brings them success. parchment or computers---use whatever makes the best art.
Cabassi is a great pianist but not remotely an accurate interpreter of Bach
as in this recording. One can´t understand the experience of the antique if one only has modern experiences.

BTW, those theatrical muggings are evidence of great expression!!!
