the back fire in this case is not from running lean...it is from running slightly rich...and the mass pressure from the bigger turbo....high tuned VW always do this. the people you are refuring to are honda people that boost the hell out of a turbo without proper tuning and end up blowing engines up. This guy just probably needs to turn his boost down a bit and he will be running fine.

@BboyKnoLedge the backfire occurs when you dump fuel across the hot CATs on throttle lift off...it's rich. not lean.
