@harrikelm Afghanstan is not a "big desert" it has a lot of lush forsests and large snowy mountains. Soviet Union attacked Afghanstan in 1979 because It wanted to spread communism, and USSR wanted to make a oil path and trade path that would have very good for USSR market. That is why they fought there for over 10 years.
Just Like USSR helped Veitnam by giving them weapons and tanks and planes, US helped afghanstan and gave them weapons like "Stingers missiles" to shoot down MI-8 and MI-24's

they tried to install the communism. what didnt work, because its very difficult to install a system in a country which never had a stable gouvernmant. and dont forgett the support from the US.

Russia cant control a group of rebels still too this day INSIDE your own country, and even to this day (2011) there are thousands of chechen rebels still there and bombing Russian vehicals with Road side bombs. It took Russia over 3 years to capture Grozny, a city within Russia?
And I know what they did, did you not see wha ti wrote under? you forget half of the other part of why Russia went there.

US has actually made a progressive democratic government inside Afghanstan, it is not the best but much much much better then Communism. We are also not loosing thousands of soldiers a day like USSR did. You know why? because unlike USSR, USA will not fall because of war In afghanstan AND Iraq...2 wars. Russian weaponary is known to Rust and brake down much faster. Russia builds its weapon cheap so they work but only for short time. A Russian T-90 will last half as much years as a M1a2 because USA keeps much better maintaince on their weapons.

@harrikelm why USA builds better technology in the world, we let computers do most of our work, and pay less for soldiers. We do not need millions and millions of soldiers like China. In 21st century it is all about technology. This is not like WW2 of who has most tanks or who has most bombs. Its who has BEST tanks and who has BEST bombs.
That is why we are very effective. The US is building state of the art Assault rifiles with computers to shoot for us, so soliders dont worry about snipers
