My father sand this as a bedtime song to help me sleep. When he was in the hospital before he was dying I sang him this song and took a final word and said Prepare to laugh. He said Keep singing. Practice on pickles. I was crying but in a good way as he said it to me and he had my hand in his hands when he passed.
whenever i'm soothing a baby i end up humming this song. a friend asked what song it was, and i hadn't a clue as ive always hummed it as a lullaby. i asked my sisters who all do the same and we remembered the line " he whistled and he sang ". our mum told us our nana would rock us to sleep every night singing that song.... she had looked after us when we were babies for two years while our parents worked nights... she couldnt believe we remembered!.. thanks for the good memories. x

I love your pictures fairyBELIEver...especially the dewy dandelion and the waterfall woman. How about making a video for Cavan Girl. Michael English and Derek McCormack (Barleycorn) both have nice versions of this song. If you don't know it, you will find it evokes many visions in your head when you hear it.
Your kind of artistic contribution ,in making this sort of video, brings beauty, light and gentleness into the world. What could be better? Cheers to you.
Im 16 and i am very proud of my irish heritage and these songs make me so much closer to my father. I love these songs been listening to them since i was very young
I've done nothing but listen to songs like this for the better part of the last week, ever since I saw the special on PBS. I think Tommy Makem and Luke Kelly, God rest 'em, are now my favorite singers.
It's a damn bloody shame that all four of these guys are gone. We could use good songs like this, not this "modern" crap they play on the radio these days.
no,too fast i was looking for a slow singer still good though

I first heard this song at a girl scout camp and I just love it. We sing the melody slightly different though.

I don't mean to be rude but in the title you leave out the man who sings the song, the great Tommy Makem.
