i remember watching him tuck into barrels there in 1983 when he was a little kid. he used to be there with another little mexican kid that did layback barrels all the way from the tip of the jetty to the channel...the two of them were unreal. that was the year the harbor got closed from the sand pouring down the coast from all the big storms

@ensinitas I sure remember that storm. I lived down in Del Mar at the time and it blew the tar slabs off the roof of our house. I remember the surf pounding through homes on the beach, and the Del Mar fairground being under water.

Here's the dope on Sandspit. You have to live in the area to be on it because it's so damn fickle. It rarely breaks, and when it does happen to get like this (which isn't very often) you'd better be good at two things: (1) dealing with crowds, and (2) pulling into tubes. Otherwise, forget it. The takeoff is insanely narrow and sketchy, especially with the backwash. And, oh yeah, Curren rips!

I submit the following: Tom surfs so well because he has an uncanny ability to read the wave. What I mean by "reading the wave" is that he seems instinctively to know how the wave is going to break in front of him and can position himself accordingly. Other great surfers have this ability but Curren seems to have it in spades. What does everyone else think? Am I full of crap or not? What's your opinion?

i watched him from grommet hood...he put in the time...paddle paddle, run up the beach, surf all day.....experience of this sort accumulates....so, yes, he CAN read the wave....but so can many others....

Im from Oz and only just seen a vid of 'sandpit' twice now thanks to youtube. What an amazingly unique kind of wave. Hows that backwash out the back huh! I never seen a wave quite like sandpit, looks like a fun wave. From the other vid i saw it looks like it gets sooo crowded too

@CreateaVibe The thing about Sandbar (what we grew up calling it) is that its an east facing break on a west coast; needs a low tide to really break right, and a massive swell to "refract" waves into it's swell window. When it's like this, Rincon is so good, and so are so many other points in the area. In '83 I surfed it over head 14 days straight; but I have never seen it that good since. I don't regret loosing my job for that. =)

Cuz it actually fucks everything else up down the beach, when they put this breakwater in to shelter the boats .. it actually cause 100 yards of sand to extend out to sea on the northern side and it sucked away 100 yards of sand from the beaches in Montecito.. The house that actually touch the water during high tide at used to be 100 yard away from the beach before the breakwater was built..
