@idontplayaround Your comments are making my point for me. You are too young to remember when the phone company had a monopoly, but Ma Bell could provide you a desk or wall phone, with rotary or button dial in about 6 colors. You couldn't get caller ID or voicemail. They existed but there was no motivation to offer them because the phone company had no competition. End the education monopoly and in 25 years our current rotary dial system will have more versatile and varied "smart phone" options.
This kid exemplifies the problem. He has an entitlement mentality. This entitlement mentality is the cancer that is killing our country. We don't have any more money. The answer is to amend the state constitution to eliminate the responsibility of the citizens to educate our youth and end all sources of funding like property taxes. With those tax savings in the pockets of Idahoans and the dying education monopoly ended, we will see the free market create a superior education apparatus!
@dansdeeds That is a terrible idealistic idea that would never happen. We have plenty of money, why not borrow from our 700 billion dollar military budget? I was given only two books for school this year, both busted up, and I have 6 AP classes that should all need books. On top of that I took an IDLA class this summer and I was appalled by the lack of motivation to teach. This is just a business, its not education. I was handed a book and assignments and told to go.

Wow. It's working. Critical thinking, thoughtful organization of ideas, and absolute fearless assertion of conviction. You know stuff we can teach on a computer. ;-) I guess I'm in the right line of work after all.
Hey Jonny just wait till you are out of high school and you need to take the online classes in college. You may be lucky enough to get in all the classes you need and not have to take the online ones, but still you will need to know how to use the online system for almost every class you take. All of my classes, even the ones I go to use online in one way or another.
@1234karey you may use the internet but that is way different from sitting in a room on a computer and trying ti memorize information instead of participating in a class discussion. what happens to all the people who have learning styles that don't mesh at all with an online class?
@pepsi6263 Taking online classes should be a choice not a requirement, you don't learn about critical thinking or really anything for that matter except the memorization of "key" topics. You will probably forget half or more of what you learn in an online class. I know I did. Some kids might learn better in online classes but that's why it should be a choice not a requirement.
Jonny must have had some of these so-called "bad teachers." After all, no "good teacher" would have taught their students to have a backbone, nor would they have taught them to do something that requires more than filling in a bubble on a test, nor would they have taught them to stand up against the government for what they believe is right and fair.
This is a complete disaster waiting to happen for various reasons. I'm a freshman, and there are many teens my age (not all) that are disrespectful to the teachers. Class sizes will increase, and the more students there are, the authority of the teacher will have a lesser effect. Students will be distracted, and I already am as it is. I love to talk to some of my teachers after school, they are very kind and actually make good conversation. I would not want to see who has to leave.

@tommylaw9 Ya teachers unions just plain suck. You must be Tom Lunatic's son and Larry Craig's love child! Teachers Unions do not suck. They are very positive not only for the teachers but also for the general public. Please do some research before you write! Also, if you were educated in any way you would use proper capitalization!

This bill wouldn't be necessary but in order for that to happen we'd have to do the unspeakable: Raise our pitifully low tax rate. But thats never going to happen because Idaho's government is run by 80 year old patato farmers from eastern Idaho.
@MoneyIsSilver We're all waiting with baited breath for your solution. Although, I imagine that tackling the issue with a completely fabricated, marginalizing and condescending statistic is all in a day's work. It's easy to remain pithy (not a good thing) and lofty when everyone else is 'idiots'.
Where do You intend to send children to learn? How would it be paid for? Teaching is indispensable. And materials are not free.

@MonsterxEnergy88 What an idiotic thing to say! Its overwhelming negative (toward Luna-tic) because this whole idea is terrible. I bet you never even graduated high school.

But what I'm skeptical about is that they have to cut money from somewhere. I'm a band kid and I'm afraid that I might not have that opportunity to play or I'll have to pay up-the-butt money to do band.
@bossross209 Ah, who is the oragan monkey now? Typical reactionary; red bait someone when you don' t like their thoughts. Its just as disgusting now as it was when sen. McCarthy did it in the second red scare. But I doubt you know about any of that, because you don't even know what the USSR stands for.
Tom Luna is a dipshit, and this bill is ridiculous.
That said, teachers in Idaho need to step it up as well.
Why have I never seen their union until their benefits are challenged?.... I've never seen them demand curricular reforms, but it should be obvious that we need something. We're 49th-50th in the nation.
Here at the University of Idaho, I see the products of these teachers every day. They can't/don't read, they don't write well, and have never seen a world map.
1:06 in and he sounds like a typical brainwashed youth.
All public schooling is bad. At the end of the day you have two groups arguing how to best spend money that was extorted from people through property taxes. No matter how you spend ill-gotten money, the results will always be bad.
@MoneyIsSilver No, I am talking about the largest number of working class people in history gaining the necessary education to achieve higher wages and move into the broad middle class of the 20th century. Now we are faced with a choice, preserving this system and improving upon it, or sitting on your fat ass in front of the computer and calling people names, you fucking troll.
@pengohansen the fact you're indoctrinated with such pure bullshit is exactly why the public school system needs to go.
Kids today are graduating and can barely fucking read. If you can't tell that the average 20 year old today is dumber than a hammer, than you got issues of your own.
@MoneyIsSilver - It is "then you have issues of your owm." It seems you are a product of what you are bashing. Maybe you should have taken some on-line courses since the "Public School System" is so terrible.
@MoneyIsSilver - It is "then you have issues of your owm." It seems you are a product of what you are bashing. Maybe you should have taken some on-line courses since the "Public School System" is so terrible.
Here's what you all need to realize: the Reagan tax cuts forced draconian budget cuts to basic infrastructure maintenance; it pushed the heaviest burden of taxation onto the middle class, that was the beginning of the current class war. Wrecking the schools is just the latest battle in that war. Warren Buffett said it: this is a class war, and my class is winning.
@BurninC4rtrage First you accuse me of saying every Congressman is corrupt, then accuse me of acting "like this world's perfect and humans make no mistakes." That's called self-contradiction.
Johnny!!! I am proud to know you and call you my peer, you truly are an inspiration and you know what you're talking about. I'm proud to have you speaking out for the students and even some teachers. Well done Johnny, you've made Mama and Stanamil and probably all your other teachers super proud
A grand kid. A great kid! What a joy and a pleasure to see and hear a young man so well-educated and passionate. Jonny, we need you. Whereever you go to college, please come back to Idaho and run for office. Soon!
@burninc4rtage um.....really? have u ever heard of Goodwin's law? What a cop out of honest discussion. also @shley831 the conservatives are not silenced in this state. this kid's reasoning is thought out reasonable, not just empty rhetoric. I've never heard one single teacher who supports this bill, or who has said they like tom luna.
@burninc4rtage um.....really? have u ever heard of goodwin's law? What a f*cking cop out of honest discussion. also @shley831 the conservatives are not silenced in this state. this kid's reasoning is thought out reasonable, not just empty rhetoric.

@BurninC4rtrage What? Why should he "respect adults above him" if they're corrupt politicians? How, exactly are they even above him if you don't focus on the age difference? If anything, he's supporting the "adults above him" he thinks actually deserve respect.
Unless some wonderful corporation wants to donate the laptops, replace them as needed, service them for the next 5 years, provide classroom charging stations and needed wiring in classrooms. But I don't see anyone lining up there...
When you have other pressing needs like maintaining old buildings, keeping the exisiting technology working in computer labs and classrooms, dying boilers, leaking roofs, kids sharing text books for lack of funds (can't take them home to study), no new library books for all grades. Not time for an experimental program I think.
Pilot programs are always an excellent way to "test drive" a new program, in a good economy, where money can be lost if it doesn't fly. My school has done some. But why start a new program NOW? Doesn't make cents :)
@sithoius That young man is a terrific orator. Now, more to the ladies here: @shley831 I make no apologies for my tartness. You people need to stiffen your backbones and get educated. Start by learning about liberal and conservative. Learn something about economics, and you'll be less easy to con. Google and read this article: Mother Jones | It's the Inequality, Stupid.
Seriously, who wrote this kid's speech? It came strait out of the mouth of every liberal I have heard talk about this. Tom Luna is trying to do the right thing, even if it's unpopular. You can't pay for things on credit all the time. The cuts have to come from somewhere!
@megsR13 Raise taxes, quality education is worth it. There's no substitute, and no hope for a better economy without it. While you're huddled under the bed in a puddle of pee, you might consider that liberals have it right.
@bjeany I might consider that but when I see that the way you respond to other people's opinions (as do most liberals) is to personally attack them. You have no idea who I am. I just have a different opinion than you and you attack me personally for it. How is that right at all? I just don't agree. Can't people just agree to disagree? Why get mean about it?
@megsR13 You show who you are by what you write. You're welcome to your opinion when it's really your opinion, but when you parrot Bennett talking points from the Reagan era, it suggests you haven't thought about it. I'm an educator from a family of educators, in my 60s. I've watched "tax cuts for people who don't need him while education budgets are cut" for 30 years, and the crashed economy we're living in is the predictable outcome of really stupid policies like the ones Luna is pushing.
@bjeany I'm not sure who Bennett is from the Reagan era. I was not very old when he took office (not even in school). These are my opinions which shows you still attack people personally without knowing them. So whoever Bennett is, he/she is a very smart person.
And thank you for your long years of service. My husband also works in the public sector. We don't like cuts but know they have to happen some times.
@megsR13 Hey megs thanks for sharing your opinion. I agree, we are silenced by the liberals by being attacked very aggresively. ANd Bjeany is raising taxes your solution to everything? There's a reason this country is bankrupt and why poeple are struggling financially. Well except the very wealthy or even the very poor (who have a fixed income) For the rest of us hard working everyday americans Its a huge shit storm out there and we take as much as we can get withou the government taking it away
@shley831 Wake up, the country isn't broke, we just went insane cutting taxes the last 30 years, especially on the upper incomes. If you were a toddler when Reagan was first elected, you really need an education. You've heard of a flat income tax, right? Well Reagan flattened the tax rates for everybody making more than about $250,000. Even though he had to raise taxes (inched up the rates) several times, he made the first huge balloon in the national debt, from @ half trillion to 3+ trillion.
@bjeany I'm an old person who got a terrific education from very modest public schools, right through to university, and I'm appalled at what my greedy generation did to this country, the conservatives in my age cohort took what our parents and grandparents built and had a party. For thirty years. We bought the fantasy that we shouldn't tax the rich because some day we would be the rich.
@bjeany Maybe if we stop electing these rich businessmen who don't care about us AT ALL then we'd be better off. They've got us by the balls. They want more money going to greedy corporations and less money going to education. Since Butch Otter is such a big shot at Simplot screw him.
It still blows my mind that Luna got re-elected. You give me hope that despite his attempts to ruin public education in Idaho there are still intelligent, thoughtful citizens graduating from our schools.
"No amount of marketing can make us believe that you're not a crook." Great line! Sadly, it's applicable to 95% of the republicans holding federal and state offices. They're all bought/paid for by corporations & pseudo-religious neo-fascists.
@43g30g I agree it was a great line, but seriously does putting up an obviously fake statistic and a bloated statement about the Republicans really help the political discourse? Please, explain why the Republicans are the things you claim them to be and offer a source for this statistic, if there is one.
@SolidSnake765 Several years ago Prof. Laurence Britt wrote an article called Fascism Anyone? (secularhumanism. org/library/fi/britt_23_2.htm). In it he listed 14 that major characteristics that the fascist/neo-fascist regimes in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Chile, & Indonesia had in common. If you can find more than 5% of republican governors, U.S. Senators and House members who don't share/subscribe to 10 or more of these 14 characteristics, please let me know.
Don severe. What a pathetic message to leave on here. Why don't you try to be a man and voice your feelings. You obviously don't have children. Think of what's best for Idaho's, the nation, the worlds future; not your pocket book.
Whatever education that 17 year old recieved needs to be protected. He's literally been taught so well he can already see bullshit before he's an adult. The hallmark of any successful education.
Well done young man! I hope Lunasees this video. And for those out of state comments supporting online programs... a big thumbs down for your comments and greed.
The people that need to be laid off are our politicians, they have no connection to the populace they are representing. Rich kids, most if not all. If I drove an ambulance and decided to go to lunch early and someone died, I'd lose my job and career. Why not the member who was elected to represent the people and instead go against the interests and wishes of the people for personal interest? It's time to erase this caste system in America we can't afford it anylonger.
Decent speech. This kid has some moxie. 2 thoughts: I don't know that "everyone" knows that online classes are a joke. Also, I don't know if he realizes how little $19,000 dollars is when it comes to nefarious motivation.
@gavinmccaleb The people who are mostly affected by online classes (students) realize that online classes are a joke. Even in college, which is one of the excuses Tom Luna is giving for making online courses mandatory, I know that all of my friends who have taken such courses would prefer to be taught by a professor, especially if that course is Organic Chemistry.
I dont agree with Luna's bill. I havent agreed with the current education system for a long time now
From a financial perspective i can see that as americans/idahoans we need to cut back on government spending. I dont believe education should be at the top of the list on cutbacks. However I am curious what programs people think we should cut back on.
Jonny Saunders is STILL my hero!

But what I'm skeptical about is that they have to cut money from somewhere. I'm a band kid and I'm afraid that I might not have that opportunity to play or I'll have to pay up-the-butt money to do band.

@MoneyIsSilver Public schooling created the great American middle class.

@pengohansen If by 'middle class' you mean 'dumbed down idiots', then I agree.
MoneyIsSilver 1 year ago
@MoneyIsSilver No, I am talking about the largest number of working class people in history gaining the necessary education to achieve higher wages and move into the broad middle class of the 20th century. Now we are faced with a choice, preserving this system and improving upon it, or sitting on your fat ass in front of the computer and calling people names, you fucking troll.
pengohansen 1 year ago 2
@pengohansen the fact you're indoctrinated with such pure bullshit is exactly why the public school system needs to go.
Kids today are graduating and can barely fucking read. If you can't tell that the average 20 year old today is dumber than a hammer, than you got issues of your own.

@nancypo1 technology on that scale is a real capital-suck, and you're right, it's insane when the buildings are crumbling.
bjeany 1 year ago
Unless some wonderful corporation wants to donate the laptops, replace them as needed, service them for the next 5 years, provide classroom charging stations and needed wiring in classrooms. But I don't see anyone lining up there...
nancypo1 1 year ago
When you have other pressing needs like maintaining old buildings, keeping the exisiting technology working in computer labs and classrooms, dying boilers, leaking roofs, kids sharing text books for lack of funds (can't take them home to study), no new library books for all grades. Not time for an experimental program I think.
nancypo1 1 year ago
Pilot programs are always an excellent way to "test drive" a new program, in a good economy, where money can be lost if it doesn't fly. My school has done some. But why start a new program NOW? Doesn't make cents :)

@sithoius That young man is a terrific orator. Now, more to the ladies here: @shley831 I make no apologies for my tartness. You people need to stiffen your backbones and get educated. bjeany 1 year ago 2
Seriously, who wrote this kid's speech? It came strait out of the mouth of every liberal I have heard talk about this. Tom Luna is trying to do the right thing, even if it's unpopular. You can't pay for things on credit all the time. The cuts have to come from somewhere!
megsR13 1 year ago
@megsR13 Raise taxes, quality education is worth it. There's no substitute, and no hope for a better economy without it. While you're huddled under the bed in a puddle of pee, you might consider that liberals have it right.
bjeany 1 year ago
@bjeany I might consider that but when I see that the way you respond to other people's opinions (as do most liberals) is to personally attack them. You have no idea who I am. I just have a different opinion than you and you attack me personally for it. How is that right at all? I just don't agree. Can't people just agree to disagree? Why get mean about it?
megsR13 1 year ago
@megsR13 You show who you are by what you write. You're welcome to your opinion when it's really your opinion, but when you parrot Bennett talking points from the Reagan era, it suggests you haven't thought about it. I'm an educator from a family of educators, in my 60s. I've watched "tax cuts for people who don't need him while education budgets are cut" for 30 years, and the crashed economy we're living in is the predictable outcome of really stupid policies like the ones Luna is pushing.
bjeany 1 year ago 2
@bjeany I'm not sure who Bennett is from the Reagan era. I was not very old when he took office (not even in school). These are my opinions which shows you still attack people personally without knowing them. So whoever Bennett is, he/she is a very smart person.
And thank you for your long years of service. My husband also works in the public sector. We don't like cuts but know they have to happen some times.
megsR13 1 year ago
@megsR13 Hey megs thanks for sharing your opinion. I agree, we are silenced by the liberals by being attacked very aggresively. ANd Bjeany is raising taxes your solution to everything? There's a reason this country is bankrupt and why poeple are struggling financially. Well except the very wealthy or even the very poor (who have a fixed income) For the rest of us hard working everyday americans Its a huge shit storm out there and we take as much as we can get withou the government taking it away
shley831 1 year ago
@shley831 Wake up, the country isn't broke, we just went insane cutting taxes the last 30 years, especially on the upper incomes. If you were a toddler when Reagan was first elected, you really need an education. You've heard of a flat income tax, right? Well Reagan flattened the tax rates for everybody making more than about $250,000. Even though he had to raise taxes (inched up the rates) several times, he made the first huge balloon in the national debt, from @ half trillion to 3+ trillion.
bjeany 1 year ago 2
@bjeany i agree we aren't broke
DRisLegend200919 1 year ago
@bjeany I'm an old person who got a terrific education from very modest public schools, right through to university, and I'm appalled at what my greedy generation did to this country, the conservatives in my age cohort took what our parents and grandparents built and had a party. For thirty years. We bought the fantasy that we shouldn't tax the rich because some day we would be the rich.
bjeany 1 year ago 18
@bjeany Maybe if we stop electing these rich businessmen who don't care about us AT ALL then we'd be better off. They've got us by the balls. They want more money going to greedy corporations and less money going to education. Since Butch Otter is such a big shot at Simplot screw him.

"No amount of marketing can make us believe that you're not a crook." Great line! Sadly, it's applicable to 95% of the republicans holding federal and state offices. They're all bought/paid for by corporations & pseudo-religious neo-fascists.
43g30g 1 year ago
@43g30g I agree it was a great line, but seriously does putting up an obviously fake statistic and a bloated statement about the Republicans really help the political discourse? Please, explain why the Republicans are the things you claim them to be and offer a source for this statistic, if there is one.
SolidSnake765 1 year ago
@SolidSnake765 Several years ago Prof. Laurence Britt wrote an article called Fascism Anyone? (secularhumanism. org/library/fi/britt_23_2.htm). In it he listed 14 that major characteristics that the fascist/neo-fascist regimes in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Chile, & Indonesia had in common. If you can find more than 5% of republican governors, U.S. Senators and House members who don't share/subscribe to 10 or more of these 14 characteristics, please let me know.

Love how the supporters bring out their usual political tactics when they haven't got a decent argument.
1. Be condescending (mom tucks him up in bed, it's cute etc). Someone even mentioned zits. Really that was the best you could do?
2. Throw out scary words (Marxism, socialism, radicalism). This is sure to frighten average Americans!!
What he said was not radical, socialist and it doesn't even begin to touch on Marxism. Great speech! Well done!
