she is beautiful and her voice is tremendous; she is always nicely and fashionably dressed; what has happened to today's woman? so pretty. i miss my wife. we sure had fun; grace is something; Glad she got sober!
the men in black goes lurching thru i use to read fate magazine when they had an issue about the men in black and i also got this album at a garage sale around the same time great times in life i wanna go to az on the plains and take a trip
God this song is so beautiful it made me mourn! I'm from La Paz, Bolivia I love Grace Slick is so talented, thanks for posting this song! hopefully been born at that time = (
There's a new video of the Starship doing this song. It sounds good played in modern times. If The Great! Society only had a little more time to bring this song out to a wider audience.
My favorite band ever, even though they weren't together long, every song they made in such a short time is magical. Jefferson airplane is my 2nd favorite, everything grace slick does is incredible
i still go on to everyone that I saw grace in 1968 when she was with J.A. it was so amazing . THis is such a great track Grace slick brings magic to this world.
I agree Chev202, her appeal was that she had an idea of what society was missing, and cared enough to try to communicate that idea and not sell out. Her caring is in the way she sings. In the early days in San Francisco she used to connect with the audience by standing motionless, but occasionally rushing to the edge of the stage to pound home the phrase she was singing right into the face of someone on the front row. "DON'T YOU WANT SOMEBODY TO LOVE!" Quite a personality.
ole grace truly got to live out her rock-roll fantasies. she was blessed to have performed at monterey, woodstock, and even altamont. I like her because she did'nt sell out to a certain genre of music that women felt chained to, at that time. she played with one of the most respected sixties band known to man and she did a damn good job, too. she had the looks and the voice that was simply stunning. "GOOD MORNING PEOPLE!! NOW IT'S TIME FOR SOME MORNING MANIAC MUSIC! " IT'S A NEW DAWN!!!!!!!!!!

i think its about dying: , what does it matter how far, the vacuum is leaving the jar.: what does it matter whenn you die? and the soul is leaving the body.
The man in black goes lurching through, and he doesn't even think of you : the man in black symbolizes the dead and he doesnt think about your things you will leave
but the greatest clue is this: Darkly smiling, there are no tickets, and you may pay, as you leave ; youll pay with your life youll just smile but not knowing what is going on
On another level, this song may also be about making love in the dark to someone she no longer feels passion for, nor does he for her. So what does it matter how far the relationship goes, if it ends, it'd just be a vacuum leaving the jar (the relationship).
This is a great song, as you say it's magical. It should have been more widely heard, too bad it wasn't. But it may be found some day, I think it's timeless.
he man in black goes lurching through, and he doesn't even think of you
What, what does it matter how far, the vacuum is leaving the jar.
The man in black goes lurching through, and he doesn't even think of you.
(polite applause)
My guess on the meaning is that it's about people with souls crushed by society, lurching through life but can't feel the beauty of it, and miss it all. So their smiles are always dark because they can't really feel pleasure.
grace is a flute playing eastern raga.. and mixed with so much soul and blues. its unfortunate the 70s and 80s really killed so much of an eastern influence with alot of bands. the mysticism just faded.
Look up Great Society @ Wikkipedia. It's the band that Slick sang with until she joined Jefferson Airplane. This song first appeared on the Collectors album, then released on Live at the Matrix. The Great Society didn't survive Slick's absence.
excuse me but i need some information abut this band. Whats the diffrence betwen Grace Slick & The Great SOciety and "The Great society" ? i cant find any info in web. Maby sombody could help me? And btw : I LOVE THEM :) Thanks
I like the great society's version of somebody to love better than the jefferson airplane version, but I love both bands, grace was gorgeous back then
simple true. if you are not borne there ,between san francisco and new york at horse 1950 and so up later, you are not born but only death. because my life is there:only
very cool... love that that subtle guitar riff in the background and then some heavy drum beats at the end there, Wow. and what a voice- bluesy, soulful, resonant. I love it.
I love listening to Grace Slick's voice....nobody out there with a voice like hers...60's music was the best....wish i could of seen her sing this song live....born to late.....
OH WHAT A GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!! GRACE just SOARS, The airplane were so loud you could not hear Grace sing sometimes,, with The Great Society her voice just took off WOW.............
Wonderful! The Great Society was some of her best work. Funny that i hardly ever heard of them until now, with You-Tube. They deserved more credit than they got.
Fantastic! I remember the Airplane's free concerts in Central Park. I hadn't heard much of The Great Society until listening to all these YouTube videos. Wonderful!
ooh - one of my faves from the amazing Great Society. So atmospheric! Darby Slick was a simply fantastic guitarist, and of course young Grace Slick can't be beat. Wonderful! Thanks for posting!
my roommate in college had a bootleg of the great society, where grace added a ps to every song as soon as it ended she screamed "FU**!" now that i hear other gs, i'm more prone to believe this was actually an airplane boot because the music was more intense.
I had the hots for her something fierce in the 60s.

(laughter)
Darkly smiling, there are no tickets, and you may pay, as you leave
The man in black goes lurching through, and he doesn't even think of you
Strain to feel the movement, and hear the music, and see the night

What does it matter how far? The vacuum is leaving the jar
