Looks as if the ship isn't as overweight as first thought. Otago has been accepted. She will be able to do all of her duties as planned, but her weight will have to be watched during the future. Don't plan on any additional future changes.
One report out of the UK has indicated that these ships failed their Lloyds certification and are around 100 tons over their designed displacement. The NZ Government apparently refused to take delivery of them and is taking legal action against Tenix's successor, Bae Systems. Watch this space....
Yep,thats what I heard here in NZ too. I am suspecting when they were working out gross tonnage, they forgot to add in the weight of the welding and a few other bits.
But hey,the Type 21 and Type 42 were supposedly that to before the Falklands.....amazing how things change when munitions start flying and how things are forgotten.
They suffer corrosion problems due to the electrolisis set up by using so many different metals. But as far as I know, they finally got the design changed after ship four ( Ahrunta? )..I know things move slowly in military halls. But for the the love of god,why build a ship with no soft spots into machinery spaces...nuts!
Ummm,I used to repair them.Hence why I know theyre crap.I have never seen anything held together with so many Rivnuts,Tech screws or modifications from a GERMAN design.Christ,we tore the guts out of Te Kaha in the first six months and changed just about every living space and food prep area.Sure it can fill supposedly its purpose, but it isnt going to last the life of what it replaced.
NZ had old Leanders when the ANZAC's came into service, and the only major corrosion zones were the boiler rooms under the evaps and few other "wet" spaces. Most of the corrosion on the ANZAC's is a mix of Ali,steel,Cupro-nickel with Stainless steels etc.
Haha. Built better than the Anzacs? I think not. the Anzac class is one of the most effective frigates in the modern world. I spose your from NZ? Don't criticize our ships when you can't even design your own. Or build, or launch.
*Edit: I should say designed.Funny how they werent allowed a third figate by the Labour government, but its fkn near the same size AND the patrol boats are Corvette size...
Its hard to believe that piece of junk costs $500 million.

The NZ frigates do not carry missiles.

Theyre scheduled to do an upgrade to Sea Sparrow block two generation in the next few years...in other words, damned expensive.

The ships they replaced, are you referring to the old ADAMS-Class DDGs such as the HMAS HOBART?
I worked on a number of those in the US during the late 1980s; they has the same electrolysis problems where the superstructure joined the main deck.
Is the same yard where the AEGIS ships are supposed to be built?
