this is possible in Super Mario Two (the japan one -- known in the U.S ast the Lost Levels) in world 1-2. Right next to the goal flag, there is an invisible coin block. A couple squares above that, theres another one. You can jump over the goal point this way.

The same thing could happen with the old "Game Genie" hack. It allowed Mario to jump like that, and if you managed to completely jump over the finish line, that's what would happen. No matter how much you keep running, eventually you run out of time and die by the clock.
