It was my bedtime when this came on...but I watched as much as I could if I was interested in the movie. With my asthma I was often up many nights anyway with headaches and insomnia from the medicine.
There was NO "CBS Saturday Night Movie" in 1970-'73, 'Cheese' (there was a "block" of comedy shows from 9 to 11pm(et)- including, at it's "base", "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW"). You're probably thinking of the 1979-'82 period..
Those were the days, weren't they? when C.B.S. played movies like "The Dirty Dozen", "Ben-Hur", "The Bridge On The RIver Kwai" and "Battle Of The Bulge". It's a pity that none of the networks (or even cable) can't come up with these distinctive musical intros today.
Yes! What they would do today is ship the animation work to China (non-union workers at two-bucks/hour)and have electronically created music instead of real musicians to play the theme (no union musicians--again to save money).
These clips remind me of bed time as a child too. It's amazing to me that so many others say the same thing. One theme song that really really reminds me of time for bed is the Love Boat intro. My parents always wathed that show in the late 70's. I was about six or seven.
How's this for trivia: the first five notes of this theme seem to me identical to the first five notes of "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. No offense to James Horner.
This version of "So Old, So Young" sounds like a different mixdown than the other CBS movie clips using this theme. I can hear a backing track with an extra brass instrument and a drummer keeping time.
According to the session logs on the ClassicThemes site, a 25-man orchestra was used for this recording. I think that's a big reason why most themes are gone now or have been replaced by synthesizer crap -- the good stuff didn't come cheap!
Memories are so good. And the featured movies was always something really good. I love things from the 70's and early 80's because it reminds me of the good ole' times when I could play outside all day but when the street lights come on, I better be in the house. I love old commercials too.
Thank you very much Bluebirdisms for bringing back some very pleasant memories for this child of the 1970s. The CBS movie openings from the 1970s and 1980s were true classics.
I got this video clip from TV-ark and they had it dated as 1974. I wouldn't know the correct dates of usage to this promo as I wasn't even born yet. I just post it so it could be with the others.
This was likely from 1977 when they updated the CBS Movie theme for primetume. In 1974 they were using the theme recorded in 1971 that was first used on The CBS Late Movie in 1972. That theme went to primetime in 1973. The prime time opens got completely replaced with a new theme song and video around 1978.
A no brainer!! This would be rated as a 6 in my book!! The following clip was from the special movie presentation opening caption on the CBS Television Network in 1974. They should have one from The CBS Friday Night Movies in the same year.

The theme, written for CBS by Morton Stevens in 1965, was primarily used on the network's movie nights, and "THE CBS LATE MOVIE"., 'lonnie'.

You can also hear it coming out of Gilligan's mouth in an episode of "Gilligan's Island" where one of his teeth becomes a radio transmitter!

This is the same theme music from the "CBS Late Movie".

This is on the periphery of my memory. The music is familiar. I probably heard it in the twilight of sleep as a preschooler.

They suck at branding today, just a whole lot of ameteures being paid more than they deserve.
